Mountain Grass Unit today release “Wait for Me,” a tender, pedal-steel-laced love song from their forthcoming debut studio album Appalachian Smoke, arriving August 28 via Dualtone Records. Featuring pedal steel from icon Karl Smakula, the new single captures a softer and deeply emotive corner of the Birmingham-born quartet's expanding sound, pairing the band's restless roots musicianship with a lyric about patience, vulnerability and the work of staying open inside a loving relationship.
Warm and searching, “Wait for Me” turns on the fragile space between needing grace and learning how to ask for it. The song's emotional center lands in a plainspoken plea — “will you wait for me?” — a small question that carries the weight of the whole song. Lyrically, Mountain Grass Unit lean into the kind of direct communication that makes love possible, acknowledging the moments when pressure spills over and the patience it takes for two people to keep choosing each other anyway.

The single offers another glimpse into Appalachian Smoke, a 13-track collection produced by six-time Grammy winner Vance Powell, Chris Stapleton, Jack White, Phish. Recorded nearly entirely live and without a metronome, the album preserves the spontaneity, feel and telepathic interplay that have made Mountain Grass Unit one of bluegrass music's most closely watched young acts, while broadening their world into psychedelic rock, jamgrass and expansive American roots music.
On Appalachian Smoke, Mountain Grass Unit honor bluegrass tradition while pushing confidently beyond it. The album's guest players include Greensky Bluegrass' Anders Beck, Grammy-winning fiddler Michael Cleveland and Smakula, whose pedal steel on “Wait for Me” gives the song a glowing, country-soul ache without pulling it away from the band's natural live-wire chemistry.
“Wait for Me” arrives as Mountain Grass Unit are in the middle of a massive summer, fresh off major festival appearances at Railbird and Bonnaroo and select dates supporting country legend Dierks Bentley. The run continues this week at High Sierra Music Festival, followed by Under the Big Sky Festival, Ossipee Valley Music Festival, Grand Targhee Bluegrass Festival, Green Mountain Bluegrass & Roots, their Grand Ole Opry debut on August 26, an August 27 album release show at Brooklyn Bowl Nashville, Earl Scruggs Music Festival, Hulaween and Panic en la Playa.
That momentum follows a breakthrough stretch that has included an IBMA Momentum Band of the Year win, more than 30 sold-out shows in 2025 and international touring. For mandolinist/vocalist Drury Anderson, guitarist Luke Black, bassist Sam Wilson and fiddler Josiah Nelson, Appalachian Smoke marks the start of the band's biggest chapter yet: a debut album shaped by years of friendship, fearless musicianship and a shared belief that bluegrass can keep moving forward without losing its soul.
Appalachian Smoke arrives August 28, 2026 via Dualtone Records.
