GUITAR LEGEND PAT TRAVERS TAKES A TRIP DOWN DYLAN’S HIGHWAY 61 WHILE BLUESED OUT IN HOUSTON
Pat Travers takes on Bob Dylan with a hard-driving live version of “Highway 61 Revisited,” out today as the latest single from Bluesed Out in Houston, arriving June 26 via Cleopatra Records.
Recorded March 20, 2004, in Houston, Texas, early in a tour that would keep the Pat Travers Band on the road across North America and Europe until July, Bluesed Out in Houston captures Travers leading a ruthlessly stripped-back trio deep into blues, rock, and road-tested firepower.
For this performance, Travers was joined by Southern rock veteran Greg T. Walker of Lynyrd Skynyrd and Blackfoot on bass, along with former AC/DC drummer Simon Wright. Together, the trio delivers a Texas-sized slab of electrified blues built around fan favorites, heavy covers, and long-form live workouts.
The album includes epic versions of “Boom Boom Out Go The Lights” and “Snortin’ Whiskey,” a 13-minute take on “Born Under A Bad Sign,” and covers of the Allman Brothers’ “Statesboro Blues,” Jimi Hendrix’s “Voodoo Child (Slight Return),” and Dylan’s “Highway 61 Revisited.”
Travers’ take on “Highway 61 Revisited” does not try to stay close to Dylan’s original. At the outset, Travers makes the band’s intentions plain: “We’re gonna kick your ass.” From there, the trio launches into a lean, fast, and blues-heavy version, with bass and drums driving the rhythm while Travers pushes the guitar into full combustion.
The energy remains raw throughout the set. By the time the band reaches the closing stretch of “Born Under A Bad Sign” and “Statesboro Blues,” Bluesed Out in Houston makes its case as one of the more hard-hitting live entries in Travers’ catalog.
Pat Travers and Cleopatra Records go back a long way, with close to two dozen releases highlighting both recent recordings and historic live albums dating back to 1980. Whether Bluesed Out in Houston stands as the best of them is up to the listener, but it is certainly in the conversation.
