On a chilly fall evening, the Moroccan Lounge felt less like a standard downtown club and more like an intimate, sweat-soaked shrine to the Black President. On October 27, 2026, Sacred Noise brought their acclaimed Fela Kuti tribute to the Arts District venue, turning the 250-capacity room into a hypnotic, polyrhythmic furnace.

Duain Richmond

Fronting the ensemble was Duain Richmond—celebrated for his star turn in Broadway’s FELA!—who stepped on stage carrying the unmistakable gravitas, sharp theatricality, and political urgency of Fela himself.

From the moment the band locked into the opening groove, Richmond held the room in the palm of his hand, steering the audience through call-and-response chants that bridged the gap between performer and crowd until the floor dissolved into a single moving mass.

Executing Fela’s complex Afrobeat arrangements requires uncompromising precision, and the musicians behind Richmond delivered a masterclass.

The rhythm section formed a relentless engine: tight, interlocking conga and shekere patterns paired seamlessly with a driving tenor guitar line that gave the groove its foundational snap.

Layered above the thick, resonant basslines, the horn section delivered crisp, triumphant stabs before launching into soaring solos over 10-plus-minute extended jams.

The tight, multi-piece ensemble brought together a dynamic horn line, interlocking percussion, and driving rhythm guitar. Richmond's commanding vocals and magnetic stage presence matched the high-octane energy of the extended Afrobeat grooves, while his seamless crowd interaction kept the room moving.

The Moroccan Lounge's close quarters amplified the brass punches and raw room energy, making the performance feel even more immediate. In a room this intimate, every rhythmic turn, horn accent, and audience response carried its own weight.

The Moroccan Lounge performance also served as a fiery warm-up for a monumental next step for the ensemble. On Sunday, November 15, 2026, the band heads to The Regent Theater in Downtown Los Angeles to anchor A Celebration of Fela Kuti’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction.

Fela Kuti is being honored as part of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's 2026 class, receiving the Musical Influence Award. The induction ceremony is scheduled for November 14 in Los Angeles.

The upcoming celebration at The Regent—featuring special guest appearances including Rich Medina’s Jump N’ Funk—promises to bring the full scale of Afrobeat’s political and musical legacy to one of LA’s premier historic stages.

If their performance at the Moroccan Lounge was any indicator, the Regent show is set to be one of the autumn’s most essential live music events.

In a venue where there is nowhere for a band to hide, Sacred Noise proved that Fela Kuti’s music remains as vital, intoxicating, and urgent today as it was at Africa Shrine.

It was a soaring, sweat-slicked celebration of Afrobeat’s enduring legacy—and a standout night for Los Angeles live music.
