Raised on a childhood of constant motion—twelve states before adulthood—Leo Kottke found his calling at age eleven when he traded violin and trombone for a weathered twelve-string guitar. Blending the country-blues of Mississippi John Hurt with the martial flair of John Philip Sousa, Kottke’s singular finger-picking style earned him early acclaim at Minneapolis’s Scholar Coffeehouse and led to a landmark Takoma Records debut, Armadillo. His tenure at Capitol Records produced classics such as Mudlark and Greenhouse, while collaborations—from John Fahey to Phish bassist Mike Gordon on Clone and Sixty Six Steps—underscore his restless creativity. With two Grammy nominations and an international following, Kottke remains a towering figure in American acoustic music.
Julian Lage, a modern polymath of jazz and beyond, returns with Speak To Me, his latest Blue Note Records release. Produced by Joe Henry, the album’s eighteen originals traverse gospel hymns, rural blues, surf-rock riffs, and free-jazz abandon—yet each melody lingers like an unforgettable earworm. Recorded in settings ranging from solo acoustic to expanded ensemble, and developed on tour with bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Dave King, the music reflects Lage’s pursuit of narrative through sound. His performances promise both virtuosic flair and emotional depth.
This one-night pairing at Chautauqua brings together two generations of acoustic innovators. Audiences can expect solo showcases, dynamic collaborations, and the spontaneous interplay that arises when two guitar masters share the stage.
