This Week’s Dead Drop Returns to Hampton’s Mothership for March 5–6, 1992

This week’s Tuesday Dead Drops heads back to the Mothership. David Lemieux takes listeners to March 5 and 6, 1992, at Hampton Coliseum, with both Grateful Dead shows now streaming in hi-res on Play Dead.

Recorded by Dan Healy and newly mastered by David Glasser from the original Grateful Dead DATs, the releases capture two nights of the band’s spring tour, from the opening “Help On The Way” > “Slipknot!” > “Franklin’s Tower” on March 5 to “The Weight” encore that closes March 6.

For Martin Knott, whose recollections accompany the release, the return to Hampton brings back memories of a VW bus ride from Atlanta with his cousin Hub and friend Greg, his first shows at the venue, and a reunion with friends from Randolph-Macon.

“Two nights. Great friends. Incredible music. Hampton, the Mothership,” Knott recalls.

The March 5 first set pairs that opening sequence with “The Same Thing,” “Jack-A-Roe,” “Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues” and “Let It Grow.” Set two opens with “Eyes Of The World” > “Way To Go Home,” followed by “Estimated Prophet” > “He’s Gone.” After “Drums” and “Space,” the band returns with “The Wheel,” “I Need A Miracle,” “So Many Roads” and “Good Lovin’,” before a “U.S. Blues” encore.

March 6 brings “Feel Like A Stranger,” “Friend Of The Devil” and a first-set-closing “Bird Song.” The second set begins with “New Speedway Boogie” > “Truckin’” > “Crazy Fingers” > “Corrina,” while the post-“Space” stretch moves through “The Last Time” > “Wharf Rat” > “Sugar Magnolia.” “The Weight” sends everyone home.

Also newly available on Play Dead are the October 4 and 6, 1980 acoustic sets from The Warfield, released last Thursday. Find those performances in the platform’s recent exclusives.
