60 years ago this summer, Stax Records’ biggest stars landed in the City of Angels for a two-night residency at South LA’s 5-4 Ballroom. Billed as the Stax Revue, the whirlwind visit was a milestone for the young Memphis soul label and marked the first time that many of the artists on the bill—Rufus & Carla Thomas, Booker T. & The M.G.’s, The Mar-Keys, The Mad Lads, Wilson Pickett, and William Bell—had played to a Los Angeles audience.

Spanning 89 rarities - over half of which have never been released in the United States - Sunset Boulevard delivers illuminating perspective onto Elvis’ 1970s recording output.

Black Thunder, the new studio album from acclaimed Seattle-based artist Brittany Davis, is out today on Loosegroove Records, the label founded by Pearl Jam’s Stone Gossard. Featuring Davis on keys and vocals, Evan Flory-Barnes on bass, and D’Vonne Lewis on drums, the collection was improvised in a surge of creativity across two days in the studio.

Today, celebrated bluesman Larry McCray releases his powerful new studio album Heartbreak City, available now on KTBA Records, the label founded by Joe Bonamassa. To mark the occasion, McCray also drops the album’s title track and latest single, “Heartbreak City”—a gut-punch of a song that puts his searing guitar work and gravel-worn vocals front and center.
