2023 marks 75 years since the iconic independent label Folkways Records was founded by Moses Asch and Marian Distler in New York City, and, to honor this anniversary, Smithsonian Folkways will be reissuing four classic albums from their storied catalog. From the powerful poetic expressions of Black joy and unity of Sarah Webster Fabio to the ecstatic old-time and bluegrass of New Lost City Ramblers & Cousin Emmy and the croaks and ribbits on Sounds of North American Frogs, these reissues reach into exciting, disparate corners of the Folkways universe.

Today, Southern rock band The Steel Woods are releasing the second single from their fourth studio album, On Your Time, The song, "Devil In This Holler" premieres today at Whiskey Riff and will be available on all streaming services tomorrow HERE.

It was 50 years ago this summer when over half a million people descended upon a tiny town in upstate New York to revel in a one-of-a-kind music experience featuring The Grateful Dead, The Allman Brothers Band, and The Band. Dubbed 'Summer Jam at Watkins Glen', it went down in history as the largest concert ever held in the United States, overshadowing even Woodstock in its magnitude.

In 1973, following the recent passing of founding member Ron "Pigpen" McKernan and the temporary exit of drummer Mickey Hart, the Grateful Dead released Wake Of The Flood. As the debut album from their own record label, Grateful Dead Records, the studio LP marked a period of transition, growth, endurance and optimism for the band, introducing a fresh lineup that included new members Keith and Donna Godchaux on keys and vocals.

The lead single “Rollin’ Down the Road” is available now presenting a merger between blues, country, and beyond, leaving listeners anticipating a colorful sonic palate by the rising band on the bluegrass circuit.
