In December of 2004 I saw Béla Fleck & the Flecktones at the Water Street Music Hall in Rochester.  At that show Béla made a mention of his plans which at that time included traveling to Africa to research the roots of the banjo.  This intrigued me as I had just been to Morocco and seen banjos being played out in the square, a sight I was not expecting, and as I also have a large amount of family in Africa.

Long before you and I ever went to see our first concert and even before our parents went to see their first, live music performances appealed to a different sense. In the time of the Greek tragedies, the rise of opera and even in the fledgling years of Broadway, the patron’s vision was the equal of his auditory sense. Theatrical music was the medium through which many of the most famous musical compositions were first delivered to an audience.

On Thursday, for at least the third time in the last 12 months, the electro-dance-rock duo BoomBox graced our fair city and the Fox Theatre with their pulsing beats and feel-good funk. Guitarist Zion Godchaux and DJ Russ Randolph seem to like it here against the mountains, and it’s lucky for us that they do. In fact, they like the Boulder crowds so much that this time around, they brought a camera crew for a live music video shoot.

In New York in the mid-‘80s, four veteran New York musicians united to form the Del-Lords: Scott Kempner from the Dictators, Eric Ambel from Joan Jett’s Blackhearts, future Cracker drummer Frank Funaro and thundering bassist Manny Caiati. Key songwriter Kempner said his vision “was to create a band that would feature four singers performing my songs — an East Coast Beach Boys if you will.” But rather than singing about girls and cars, the Del-Lords sang about things that mattered to them: the everyday grind of life and how it affected the band and those around them.

Crosby, Stills & Nash (CSN) will be among several extraordinary musical artists to perform at the 14th Annual Gathering of the Vibes, July 23-26, 2009, at Seaside Park, Bridgeport, Connecticut.

With summer just around the corner, the 10,000 Lakes Festival has added Atmosphere and Ozomatli to the lineup and will host four nights of music and camping with headlining sets from Dave Matthews Band, two nights of Widespread Panic, and Wilco for the 7th annual event held at the Soo Pass Ranch in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota July 22 – 25.

The final artist lineup for the 10,000 Lakes Festival features over sixty acts performing on four stages including:

On Friday, April 24th the Backbeat Jazzfest Series will kick off its fourth consecutive season with a high-spirited performance by the legendary Dirty Dozen Brass Band featuring Booker T. Quoted by the Rolling Stone for radically modernizing brass-band music, the members of Dirty Dozen Brass Band were the first to incorporate funk and bebop to traditional New Orleans sounds putting distinctly personal stamps on traditional and familiar material.
