The New Orleans Cigar Box Guitar Festival, founded in 2016, has gained a reputation for outstanding entertainment during its first four years in existence. For 2020, Samantha Fish and the NOCBGF have partnered to expand the growth and outreach of the festival and the Cigar Box guitar.

“I have included the Cigar Box guitar on a song or two on most of my albums (including my last single 'Bullet Proof,' says Samantha Fish. "The instrument may look limited but there are so many sounds and styles that we haven’t discovered yet. I am looking forward to making this one of the biggest events honoring the instrument as well as other acoustic instruments that can Rock.”

"The partnership of Samantha Fish and the New Orleans Cigar Box Guitar Festival is a marriage made in roots music heaven," says Festival Producer, Collins Kirby.  "She's a contemporary artist who's fully in touch with the traditions that inform today's music.  We're delighted to work with her spreading the word about the art and music of handmade instruments."

The focus of the event is to celebrate the great music and rich cultural history of the Cigar Box guitar and similar homemade instruments. Historically, Western pioneers, Civil War soldiers, rural farmhands, street singers and other resourceful musicians found ways to build these expressive devices from household items and random hardware.  Many musicians throughout the world are currently using them to record and perform live, making the unique instruments and their sound a staple of today’s Americana music scene.

The festival is excited to present top homemade instrument performers April Mae & the June Bugs, Sugarcane Jane, John Nickel, Cigar Box Serenaders, Steve Arvey, Cash O’Riley, and others. Workshops, demonstrations and interviews will comprise the educational component of the event.

In addition, the Festival will host special sets which will include the legendary John Mooney, New Orleans icon Big Chief Monk Boudreaux and the Golden Eagles, Jonathon Long, Waylon Thibodeaux, Johnny Sansone, Damon Fowler, Jimbo Mathus (Squirrel Nut Zippers), and more. On Friday and Saturday, Samantha Fish and guests will be performing, closing both nights at The Howlin’ Wolf with a special concert.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the New Orleans Blues Society.  Details and ticket opportunities are available at www.SamanthaFishCigarBoxGuitarFestival.com

On June 21st, Diana Rein released her new studio album, Queen Of My Castle, the follow-up to her 2016 release Long Road. Queen of My Castle was co-produced by Michael Leasure (drummer Walter Trout Band) and mixed by Lincoln Clapp (who previously mixed Texas Flood by Stevie Ray Vaughan, one of Diana’s biggest influences). The new album is a collection of fifteen songs, one of which is a tribute to Stevie Ray Vaughan.

The album kicks off with the autobiographical song “Yes I Sing the Blues” that talks about Diana’s introduction to the Blues. She tells her story with a modern twist on the blues and plays lead guitar in the Texas Blues vein. Next is “The Midnight Line” which is a raw and scorching number about a clandestine meeting on a train between two people. “We can ride and ride in sin for the rest of our lives...” The title song “Queen of My Castle” is a blues shuffle that gives us some clever lyrics that will empower women with sweet and powerful lead guitar phrases that will perk purist’s ears up. “I Can’t Quit You” is a steady blues groove and progression that gets down and dirty. “I can’t quit you baby, you’re the devil in disguise, you keep me watered but you steal my light.” The song touches on addiction and being lost in someone so much that you just can’t let go. “One Foot In” laments about a lover being confronted about being unfaithful. A very upbeat blues number, “Walking Along” brings a pep in your step and keeps itself light and non-committal in the nature of the lyrics. The main guitar riff keeps rolling along and lends itself to toe-tapping. The song “Pure Soul” gets into more Blues Rock territory and is a love letter to Stevie Ray Vaughan and his legacy. The fiery guitar solo, chock full of fuzz, gives the boost and power that is very appropriate for a song about the mega guitar hero. “It's You” has a groove reminiscent of a moving train on the tracks. It plods along and doesn’t let up. One of only a few songs on the album that are embellished with backing vocals during the chorus which adds a nostalgia of an oldies tune.

The Latin rhythm added to the blues and 2 tasty solos in the song “My Love” makes this a unique addition to the album. The song “Get Down” is a fun number about letting your hair down and getting lost in the music and the people you are with. It has an interesting pop blues feel that gets you on your feet and features the keyboards and guitar interconnected with a very catchy riff. The guitar solo dances with a funky wah pedal and is a perfect fit. The album slows down a bit for “Chill of the Night”, a Blues piece in the vein of a torch song. The keyboards get featured in the solo followed by a guitar solo. The vocals are warm and reveal the sadness of missing someone and longing for their love. In the song “Worth”, Diana aims to get women to value who they are and not bow down to anyone at any age. To be strong in your convictions and know that you matter and are worth being respected. “It’s a big man’s world, under lock and key, try to make the climb and keep your sanity....” “Time's Ticking Away” is a positive song about loving and caring about one another. It starts off with a rock feel and is nothing short of inspirational to remember the important things in life. It’s a plea to understand that time is short and we must do our best to be kind while we are here. “Time’s ticking away, let go of all of your pain, let your inner light shine and keep love in your mind.” “Heat” is Blues Rock at its finest with an indelible guitar riff that keeps stomping. The lyrics and vocals are dirty and gritty, same goes with the lead guitar that packs a huge punch. A very anthemic chorus rounds it out to make this song a big winner. The one Instrumental song on the album, “Zoe”, about a lost loved one ends the album on a beautiful note. The melody of the song will embed itself into your soul and stir up heartfelt memories that just won't stay buried.

There’s nothing traditional about Blues artist Diana Rein. Diana’s parents escaped communist Romania in 1981 when she was 3 years old. They arrived in Chicago, on Halloween with only $50 and a dream for a better life. Diana brought her family's strong Romanian work ethic to performing arts school, where her talents flourished, eventually leading her to a role in the classic American 90’s comedy "Home Alone”. Diana's love of Blues started at 8, when her parents brought her to a Chicago Blues Club, arranging to have her perform some songs with the band. This was a defining moment. A blues artist was born. Over the years, Diana's music heroes and influences emerged: SRV, Prince, and Philip Sayce to name a few. But it all started back in Chicago, the home of amazing Blues legends like Buddy Guy.  Diana followed her heart to California, where it would be broken repeatedly and made stronger each time. With experience came strength, self-reliance and plenty of songwriting material. At one point when hope was slipping away, Diana promised to make music her life's work and grabbed the reins on her songwriting and guitar playing. Music never stopped knocking and Diana is glad she finally swung the door wide open and let it in. So are her fans. Today Diana calls Southern California home, where she continues to release original music and play what feels good for anyone who will listen. Her promise to her fans is that she will never stop making music and growing as an artist.

The Ben Rice Blues Band embark on their Spring 2020 Tour, with a local performance at Full Circle Brewing Company, 620 F Street, Thursday, February 20. Showtime: 8pm. Free. Info: (559) 264-6323 or visit https://fullcirclebrewing.com.

Based in the great Northwest music hot-spot of Portland, Rice was recognized by his peers as the Sean Costello Rising Star Award Winner by Blues Blast Magazine in 2019. The guitarist/vocalist was also a 2019 Blues Music Awards nominee. The Cascade Blues Association bestowed four awards on Rice last year: "Best Contemporary Act," "Best Traditional Blues Act," "Male Vocalist Of The Year," and "Best Electric Guitar."

Rice's music is deeply rooted in traditional blues, yet at the same time fiercely original. His guitar playing earns labels like "fearless," "inventive" and "powerful," and he routinely brings audiences to their feet with his stunning and emotionally honest vocal delivery. Ben is as much home fronting his electric blues band as he is captivating a crowd solo with nothing but his voice and his resonator guitar. His latest album is titled Wish The World Away

Meanwhile, log on to Tab’s Facebook page each Wednesday at 7pm Central Time and support Whiskey Bayou Record's artists as they perform live!

JP Soars

LET GO OF THE REINS showcases one of the blues world’s premier talents, JP Soars, with incredible style as a guitarist, singer, and songwriter. A two-time Blues Music Awards nominee, Soars draws from many styles and blends them into a sound that is all his own. Produced by Tab Benoit – LET GO OF THE REINS is a landmark CD for Soars and Benoit as they stretch boundaries while delivering solid songwriting craftsmanship on their “swampish” endeavor. J.P. is psyched about this latest release that was recorded during a whirlwind week-long session at Tab Benoit’s Whiskey Bayou studios, with a band featuring Red Hot’s drummer Chris Peet on bass, and Benoit on drums. They recorded twelve songs in five days – eight originals which they wrote on the spot, plus four choice covers. The inspiration for the album came from the many nights they all spent jamming into the wee hours on the Legendary Rhythm and Blues Cruise and at the Big Blues Bender, and as expected, they captured many magical musical moments.

In the decade since he burst upon the national scene by winning 1st place in the Blues Foundation’s 2009 International Blues Challenge in Memphis, TN with his band the Red Hots (and the prestigious Albert King Award as best guitarist), Arkansas native J.P. Soars has toured extensively through the United States, Canada, South America and Europe, and released an impressive catalog of powerful music. In addition to his work with his own Red Hots, Soars has been part of the regional all-star blues act Southern Hospitality, also featuring Tampa vocalist/guitarist Damon Fowler and 2019 Grammy nominee, Memphis vocalist/keyboardist Victor Wainwright, plus Red Hots drummer Chris Peet and Wainwright’s bassist Terrance Grayson.

Alastair Greene

Guitarist, singer and songwriter Alastair Greene will be releasing an exciting new record on Tab Benoit’s Whiskey Bayou Records. Known as a rocking guitarist with a strong blues background, Greene has released eight previous records. In addition to many years with his own band, he toured internationally for over 7 years with the Alan Parsons Project, and has spent the past year as the guitarist in the Sugaray Rayford Band, nominated for a Blues Music Award this year for BAND OF THE YEAR. Greene’s musical journey has been anything but traditional. His combination of Blues, Southern Rock, and Jam Band sensibilities has been thrilling audiences for nearly two decades. With recent performances at the Chicago Blues Festival and the Big Blues Bender in Las Vegas as well as recent tours filling in on guitar with Starship featuring Mickey Thomas, and many guest appearances with such luminaries as Eric Burdon, Walter Trout, Coco Montoya, Savoy Brown, John Nemeth, and Debbie Davies, it’s crystal clear….. Alastair Greene’s star is on the rise.

Alastair and Tab got to know each other on some annual gigs at the Big Blues Bender, and soon become friends as well as musical compadres, so when Tab asked Alastair to join his Whiskey Bayou Records label, it was a natural fit. Greene traveled to Whiskey Bayou Studios in Houma Louisiana with a handful of songs. Tab helped arrange and produce, they did some co-writing, and wound up with 11 original songs. With Greene on guitar and vocals, Tab on drums and harmony vocals, and Corey Duplechin on bass and harmony vocals they recorded most tracks live in the studio. Greene notes that these songs reflect more straight-up blues than his last couple of records, while the songwriting does stretch in to some different territories — Blues Rock filtered through a funky Louisiana Rhythm section. The new record will be coming in 2020. Stay tuned!

Josh Garrett

Garrett is a triple-threat singer, songwriter, guitarist with a growing reputation as an exciting genre-crossing performer from New Roads, LA. He and his family relocated to Houma, LA when Josh was a child. He picked up his father’s guitar when he was 12 years old and started writing songs soon after. By age 20, Garrett was performing several times a week in Houma, LA. At age 24, he recorded his first album entitled, Changed Man and never looked back. In 2008, he relocated to Nashville, TN. While there, he recorded his second album, Live on Printer’s Alley – a double album. Two years later Josh returned home to Louisiana and began work on his third album. String of Problems, released Aug 2011, which hit #1 on the Roots Music Louisiana Blues Charts and hit the #1 Spot two weeks in a row on American Blues Scene “Blues Top Five”. Josh still resides in his home state of Louisiana near Baton Rouge.

Multi-Grammy® nominated blues legend Kenny Neal says, “Josh is our next generation with an old soul and he’s playing it with his heart. That’s what we need more of today.”  And rock great Jimmy Hall emphasized – “Josh Garrett is a young triple threat blues man, with a winning combination of unique Cajun flavor guitar work, soulful vocals, and a killer band.  I am honored to perform with him.”  Today.com wrote – “Not only is [Josh Garrett] an amazing musician, he’s an excellent performer. He’s charismatic, fun, and really knows how to work the crowd. If you go to see Josh Garrett and the Bottom Line you will definitely have an amazing time, especially if you love the blues.” Keep your eyes on Josh for a release in 2020 produced by Tab Benoit for Whiskey Bayou Records.

Eric McFadden

Eric McFadden is a guitar virtuoso/songwriter/vocalist. He has toured the world both as a solo artist, as well as with funk legend George Clinton (Parliament/Funkadelic), and rock legend Eric Burdon (The Animals). McFadden is a member of the new super-group, T.E.N, alongside Thomas Pridgen (Mars Volta) and Norwood Fisher (Fishbone). McFadden spent years touring extensively with the Eric McFadden Trio (EMT), which features bass phenomenon James Whiton (Tom Waits) and drummer extraordinaire, Paulo Baldi (Cake, Les Claypool). Eric is also a member of the all-star band, Stockholm Syndrome, which also includes notable players such as Dave Schools (Widespread Panic), Jerry Joseph (Jack Mormons), Wally Ingram (Sheryl Crow) and Danny Louis (Govt Mule). Between 2015 and 2017, Eric spent 2 1/2 years touring as guitarist for New Orleans favorite, Anders Osborne.

Eric McFadden has also collaborated on stage and/or in the studio with the regal likes of Bo Diddley, Keb Mo’, Living Colour, Joe Strummer (The Clash), Nels Cline (Wilco), Les Claypool (Primus), Leo Nocentelli, George Porter Jr and Zigaboo Modeliste of The Meters, Pat MacDonald (Timbuk3), Bernie Worrell (Talking Heads, P-Funk), Jesse Hughes (EODM), Bonnie Raitt, Bill Kruetzman (Grateful Dead), Ron Wood, Bernard Fowler & Chuck Leavell (Rolling Stones), Pink, Fishbone, The Revivalists, Pete Sears (Jefferson Airplane, Rod Stewart), Carla Bozulich, Joe Santiago & Dave Lovering (The Pixies), Widespread Panic, Jackson Browne, Mike Watt (Minutemen, Stooges), The Reverend Horton Heat, Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros, Steve Stevens (Billy Idol), Grace Potter, Galactic, Boots Riley (The Coup), North Mississippi Allstars, Stewart Copeland (The Police), Dug Pinnick (Kings X) among others.

Eric McFadden is a veteran of such celebrated west coast bands as Alien Lovestock, Angry Babies, Tasty Face, Liar, IZM, EMT, and the Faraway Brothers.

McFadden recently signed with Tab Benoit’s label, Whiskey Bayou records. He’s been touring in support of his new album, “Pain By Numbers”, which features, Doug Wimbish (Living Colour, Mick Jagger) and Terence Higgins (Annie DiFranco, Warren Haynes), and was released September 7th 2018. In addition, Eric just released in November on Bad Reputation out of France, was Eric’s all acoustic AC/DC tribute record. Also released in 2018 was his duo record with guitar great, Omar Torrez (Tom Waits). Among his other recent projects is,The Sophistakits, which was co-founded with guitarist and friend, Eddie Roberts (New Mastersounds), and includes Wally Ingram, Miles Tackett, Jeff Franca and Chris Spies.

Damon Fowler

After spending much of the past year touring with the band Southern Hospitality, Damon Fowler is back with his third solo project for Blind Pig Records, Sounds of Home. Damon chose swamp blues master Tab Benoit to produce and record him at Tab’s rural Louisiana home studio, and their collaboration has resulted in Damon’s strongest effort to date. The tension between his measured, laid-back vocal delivery and the hallmark intensity of his guitar virtuosity has never been keener, and the stories told in his songwriting here – sometimes in collaboration with long-time writing partner Ed Wright and Benoit – exhibit a combination of depth, grace and humor very few of his contemporaries can match.

Damon sets the standard for what is to come on the first track, “Thought I Had It All.” It’s an  introspective, brooding tale shot through with razor sharp, frenetic guitar leads. Other songs like the title cut and “Where I Belong” flow in an easy Southern groove.  Damon offers up two covers, peppering Johnny Winter’s “TV Mama” with slithering slide guitar runs, and doing a great version of Elvis Costello’s “Alison.” The country tinged “Old Fools, Bar Stools, And Me” offers a poignant take on a familiar theme. “Do It for The Love” is a sweetly contemplative ballad featuring the lyrical counterpoint of Damon’s lead guitar and Tab’s pedal steel. The album closes with an inspired, finger-picked rendition of the traditional gospel song, “I Shall Not Be Moved.”  As with Damon’s legendary live performances, Sounds of Home takes the listener on a tour through the rich traditions of American roots music, presented by one of its foremost practitioners.

Alongside his solo career, Damon joined forces with fellow guitarist JP Soars and keyboardist Victor Wainwright in 2011 to form the southern roots rock group, Southern Hospitality. SoHo quickly became a strong draw on the national circuit due to their early, roof-raising live performances and their first recording, Easy Livin’, on Blind Pig. Of their first show BluesWax said, “Southern Hospitality, after a single gig, has significant players in the blues world taking notice. Fowler, Wainwright and Soars share much love for the songs of the South. The hot jazz and funk of New Orleans, classic country, gospel, soul, and blues that became rock ‘n’ roll in Memphis and went global by way of a trucker named Elvis.” Hittin’ The Note called the album “a dozen potent shots of pure Southern pleasure. The roughneck, laid-back ways of this fine debut are reminiscent of the best days of Southern rock.” Damon has neatly managed to balance his participation in SoHo with his own, well-established solo endeavors.

Showtime: 7:30pm. All ages. Face masks required for entry. Tickets: $40.-$60. Info: (864) 467-3000 or visit https://tickets.peacecenter.org/Online/mapSelect.asp.

Benoit and Fish recently performed together at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville last November. "Tab's warm and disarming stage presence and heartfelt playing...this is an artist whose playing speaks to you as much as the lyrics do," writes Music Connection, in a live review.

One of the most impressive guitarists to emerge from the rich Bayous of Southern Louisiana in recent years, Tab Benoit’s guitar tone can be recognized before his Otis-Redding-ish voice resonates from the speakers. He doesn’t rely on any effects and his set up is simple. It consists of a guitar, cord, and Category 5 Amplifier. The effects that you hear come from his fingers.

Always known for his environmental activism,  performed two nights in his hometown of Houma at the 16th Annual Voice of the Wetlands Festival.  He also appears prominently in the IMax motion picture Hurricane on the Bayou, a documentary of Hurricane Katrina's effects and a call to protect and restore the Wetlands and produced a CD to help restore that state's Coastal Wetlands. In Spring 2020 Benoit was inducted into the Louisiana Folklife Center Hall of Master Folk Artists, asnd earlier was inducted into the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame.

The Louisiana-based Benoit has been the recipient of five Grammy nominations and multiple Blues Music Awards including twice winning the BB King Entertainer of the Year Award from the Blues Music Association. Benoit's own Whiskey Bayou Record label has thus far released albums by such established artists as Eric McFadden, Alastair Greene, Damon Fowler, Eric Johanson, Jeff McCarty, and Dash Rip Rock.

"That was my mission on this album: To really set these songs up so that they have a life of their own,” says guitarist Samantha Fish about Kill or Be Kind, her sixth solo album and Rounder Records debut, and one that helped her earn a "Contemporary Blues Female Artist" nomination for the 42nd Annual Blues Music Awards in 2021. “Strong messages from the heart – that’s what I really set out for.”

Indeed, what comes across immediately on hearing the album is the extraordinary level of song-craft on its eleven tracks, the way these songs are so smartly put together to deliver a potent emotional impact. Anyone who has ever heard Fish’s previous albums knows that she has earned a place in the top rank of contemporary blues guitarists and that her voice can wring the soul out of a ballad and belt out a rocker with roof-shaking force. Those virtues are fully in evidence on Kill or Be Kind. Each of the songs tell captivating stories, set up by verses that deftly set the scene, choruses that lift with real feeling, and hooks that later rise up in your thoughts. Those qualities make Kill or Be Kind a genuine artistic breakthrough for Fish.

Tickets to the 2021 San Diego Music Awards go on sale Monday, May 10 at Noon.  Info: https://www.sandiegomusicawards.com Hensley previously took home "Best Blues Group" at the 2019 SDMA, performing that evening as well.

"Thank you so much for the nominations," said an excited Hensley upon learning of her two nominations. "This album is my baby and I'm so happy people are enjoying it!"

The San Diego Music Awards were created in 1991 as a way to recognize the achievements of the city's diverse local music community. Now in its twenty-ninth year, the San Diego Music Awards presents awards in over twenty categories, recognizing many different genres of music including Rock, Jazz, Hip Hop, Blues, Americana, and World Music. Past SDMA performers include Jewel, Jason Mraz, Switchfoot, P.O.D., and Sara Watkins (Nickel Creek). The San Diego Music Awards serves as the primary fund-raising vehicle for the San Diego Music Foundation's Guitars for Schools Program.

Currently, Hensley and her terrific band (renowned guitarist Laura Chavez, who herself once performed and recorded with the late, great Candye Kane; and drummer Evan Caleb Yearsley Gutierrez, who's also Kane's son) are rehearsing and preparing to hit the road again this Summer. Hensley is also set to go in-studio with Isaiah Mitchell (The Black Crowes, Earthless) to record some new music and a new video.

What makes the Woodystock Blues Festival so special besides a great lineup? Location, location, location. "I was in negotiations with the  Mojave County Fairgrounds when I met Gary Watkins, Head of Maintenance for Davis Camp Park, who suggested I check out the Pavilion there," Woodystock Promoter John Woodard Jr. told The Los Angeles Beat. "Once we got there, it was like, 'Wow,' it was so beautiful that the puzzle pieces just seem to fit. This is a fantastic location." Woodystock and Davis Camp Park Pavilion are a few short blocks from the still-majestic Colorado River, it's inviting Palm Trees and Beaches, and, of course, a host of big-name Casino/Hotels in Laughlin, Nevada, adjacent to Bullhead City, in close proximity to the Festival.

Carefully curated by John and Katy Woodard with some help from his publicist, Woodystock Blues Festival's eclectic two-day lineup definitely brings it. Festival Headliner is Multi-Blues and Grammy Award Winner, and saxophone player extraordinaire,  Jimmy Carpenter, perfoming with his Band. Besides being an award-winning musician, Carpenter is involved with the Big Blues Bender, and is President of the Las Vegas Blues Society. Jimmy's most recent album is "Soul Doctor," on Gulf Coast Records. Guitar lovers won't want to miss either Tommy Marsh and his well-traveled Crooked Eye Tommy, returning to Woodystock all the way from Nashville, Tennessee; or electrifying, genre-crossing guitarist and vocalist, Jay Gordon & Blues Venom, who perform both Saturday and Sunday. Other artists include 2022 Regional IBC Winner from Southern California, the Sandy Haley Band, fronted by powerful vocalist, Sandy Haley;  eclectic Las Vegas faves, The Good Hurt; LA/High Desert staples and popular Woodystock attraction, Delta Shade; Arizona by way of San Francisco and bringing their Blues on the edge, Catbone; entertaining blues duo, The Reverend & The Doctor; SoCal/High Desert mainstay, The Blue Henrys, featuring guitarist, Henry Meranda; and the return of  Stone Stanley, an Americana grunge band and the musical project of Jason Trembley. Singing The Star Spangled Banner again this year to kick off Woodystock Blues Festival is Miss Tiffany Lynn. Woodystock Blues Festival Emcee is Sandy Haley.

Tickets: $86.49-$369.00. Info: (386) 364-1683 or visit https://www.suwanneerising.com/.

From 5:00-6:15pm, Melody & Vaylor sit in with Magnolia Boulevard (Amphitheater Stage). Then from 8:00-9:00 pm, Brother & Sister perform a full set (Porch Stage). Finally, in the Closing Set from 12:00-1:3 am, Melody & Vaylor sit in with Nikki Glaspie's Nth Power Ball (All Star Jam).

Besides Melody and Vaylor Trucks, Brother and Sister band members include Eric Sanders (The Yeti Trio, Col. Bruce Hampton), Garrett Dawson (Butch Trucks and the Freight Train, The Bird Tribe), Willis Gore (Bonnie Blue, The Melody Trucks Band), and Matt Stallard (Chris Duarte Group). Their set at Suwannee will feature a tribute to Vaylor and Melody's musical roots, the Allman Brothers Band, as they are the two eldest children of ABB drummer, Butch Trucks.

"Vaylor and Melody are the two oldest children of Butch Trucks, the late drummer and founder of the Allman Brothers Band. Recreating the sound of their dad's old band is what Brother and Sister is all about," writes Tom Szaroleta in the Florida Times Union (read his recent interview with Melody Trucks, here). "Allman Brothers Band drummer Butch Trucks’ kids, Melody and Vaylor, bring a full band on this date of a short three-day run. The all-star lineup includes musicians who played with Col. Bruce and Chris Duarte along with Butch’s post Allmans’ Freight Train Band. Expect lots of jamming on ABB tunes by some solid players with a family connection to the originals…what’s not to like?," writes Creative Loafing.

Melody and Vaylor (as a duo, sans band) also currently host the "Blue Jay Concert Series" in their hometown of Jacksonville at Blue Jay Listening Room. Recent guests respected blues guitarist-vocalist, Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi All Stars, The Black Crowes, John Hiatt) and longtime Wet Willie vocalist/harpist, Jimmy Hall.

NOLAFUNK And Live Nation Presents The Devon Allman Project featuring Walter 'Wolfman' Washington and Fred Tackett, (Little Feat) plus Special Guests Tab Benoit and Samantha Fish, at The Fillmore/New Orleans, Friday, May 6. Show: 8:00pm. tickets: $39.50-$69.50. Info: (504) 881-1555 or visit http://cncrt.ly/TheFillmoreNOLA

Devon Allman’s life reads like that of the quintessential American troubadour. Born in Corpus Christi, Texas, the singer-songwriter, guitarist, keyboardist, and producer spent his early years dividing time between the Lone Star State, Tennessee, and St. Louis, Missouri. Raised by his mother, Devon began playing music as a youth. He was 16 when he first met his father, Gregg.

Gregg invited Devon on the road with The Allman Brothers Band, during the group’s Dreamstour in the summer of 1989, where he first met ABB progeny, Berry Duane Oakley and Duane Betts. On many occasions, Devon would sit-in with the Brothers, often performing “Midnight Rider” alongside his father. Included among the many musical heavyweights Devon would join onstage throughout his career are Les Paul, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Billy Gibbons, Gov’t Mule, Blackberry Smoke, and Lukas Nelson.

He founded Devon Allman’s Honeytribe in 1999, recording two albums and touring the world intermittently over the next decade. In 2011, Devon paired with Cyril Neville to form Royal Southern Brotherhood. The supergroup released a trio of albums, won a Blues music award, and culminated their world tour with an appearance at London’s Royal Albert Hall. Concurrently, Devon was cultivating a prolific solo career, issuing Turquoise in 2013 and Ragged & Dirty (2014), garnering widespread critical acclaim as well as top Billboard positions, including #1 on the Blues chart for 2016’s Ride or Die.

In 2017, Devon assembled the Devon Allman Project, commencing a 2018-19 world tour with Duane Betts as a special guest. Following that successful run, he and Betts announced the formation of the Allman Betts Band, reuniting with Oakley and recording their debut album at the famed Muscle Shoals studio..

Tab Benoit, respected Louisiana-based blues guitarist-vocalist and storyteller extraordinaire, has launched an ambitious 2022 Spring-Summer National Tour.

Benoit is renown throughout his thirty-plus-year career for his passionate environmental activism. To that end, he performed two nights in his hometown of Houma, Louisiana at the 16th Annual Voice of the Wetlands Festival. He also appears prominently in the IMax motion picture Hurricane on the Bayou, a documentary of Hurricane Katrina's effects and a call to protect and restore the Wetlands, and produced a CD to help restore that state's Coastal Wetlands. Benoit was inducted into the Louisiana Folklife Center Hall of Master Folk Artists in 2020.

One of the most impressive guitarists to emerge from the rich Bayous of Southern Louisiana in recent time, Tab Benoit’s guitar tone can be recognized before his Otis-Redding-ish voice resonates from the speakers. He doesn’t rely on any effects and his setup is simple. It consists of a guitar, cord, and Category 5 Amplifier. The effects that you hear come from his fingers.

Over the course of her career as an award-winning artist, singer/songwriter/guitarist Samantha Fish has brought extraordinary power to her self-expression, capturing her inner world in combustible riffs, visceral rhythms, and spine-tingling vocal work. On her new album Faster, she joins forces with superproducer Martin Kierszenbaum (Lady Gaga, Sting, Sheryl Crow) and imbues even more intensity into her electrifying brand of blues/rock-and-roll. With Fish accompanied by legendary drummer Josh Freese (Guns N’ Roses, Nine Inch Nails, The Replacements) and bassist Diego Navaira of The Last Bandoleros, the result is a singular body of work both irresistibly galvanizing and emotionally raw.

The follow-up to 2019’s Kill or Be Kind (Fish’s Rounder Records debut), Faster came to life at the famed Village Studios in Los Angeles, where she and Kierszenbaum uncovered new possibilities in her captivating sound. “Kansas City played a major part in bringing us together: I was born and raised in KC and Martin has some familial ties. Shortly after being introduced last year, we had a conversation about making an album,” she recalls. “His track record was perfect for what I wanted to do with this album, which was to expand into different genres while retaining the roots I’d built in the blues world.” Revealing her affinity for North Mississippi blues heroes like R.L. Burnside and wildly inventive iconoclasts like Prince, the album ultimately embodies an unbridled energy true to its emotional core. “The whole record has a theme of taking charge and taking the reins, in a relationship or in life in general,” says Fish. “I really thought that after 2020 I’d end up with a really dismal, bleak album, but instead, we came up with something that’s fun and sexy and so empowering.”

What The Press Is Saying About...Tab Benoit

"Tab Benoit has been a frequent Lincoln visitor over the three-plus decades that he’s been bringing his brand of blues out of Louisiana. Known for his distinctive guitar tone and fiery playing, he’s a powerhouse vocalist who sounds something like Otis Redding," writes the Lincoln Journal-Star.

"Benoit took the stage, and within ten minutes the rain slowed to a drizzle, then stopped completely.  Blues From The Top 1, Mother Nature 0," writes Denver Entertainment Hub's Rick Witt. "From his set opening “Why Are People Like That” to his encore “Medicine”, Benoit had the delighted crowd swinging, singing, and swaying. Benoit’s set was the perfect culmination of three fabulous days of extraordinary music at an extraordinary venue in an idyllic location".

Tab Benoit is renowned throughout his thirty-plus-year career for his passionate environmental activism. One of the most impressive guitarists to emerge from the rich Bayous of Southern Louisiana in recent time, Tab Benoit’s guitar tone can be recognized before his Otis-Redding-ish voice resonates from the speakers. SoCal-based blues vocalist and band leader Sandy Haley tends to write songs about conditions that affect her. Her newest, 'Run For Shelter,' is a true story "about when I found a woman lying on a sidewalk in the Winter outside of a Target store. She had no clothes or shoes on, and was wrapped only in a blanket," recalls Haley. "I went inside (Target) and bought her an outfit, some flip-flops and some food. When she got dressed, she looked like any other shopper. Sadly, dozens of shoppers had walked past her without helping. My gospel ending in the song says "love will find a way' if everyone does just a little bit."  The horns on this song are worth listening to alone, augmented by Haley's hot vocals: https://open.spotify.com/track/05gpqcHpjUK6LJKwDWqzn2?si=b5c3005069db4cbe.

Haley's previous 'Love Me Right Or Cut Me Loose' was an ode "to give strength and courage to women that are in toxic relationships with cheaters or abusers. If you can't love me right, if you don't want to just be mine, cut me loose. The track was featured on her most recent EP "Feels Like Freedom."

Sandy Haley, just voted a 'Top 100 Artist for 2022' by influential magazine Music Connection, kicks off 2023 with a bang, opening for premier West coast blues guitarist, Tommy Castro and the Painkillers, at the Canyon Club and Special Events Center, 20912 Roadside Drive, Thursday, January 19. Showtime is 7pm. Tickets: $20.-$26. Info: (818) 879-5016 or visit http://wheremusicmeetsthesoul.com/canyon-agoura-hills/.

Haley's captivating blues/R&B sound was also heard when she was one of the headliners at the Woodystock Blues and Brews Festival in Laughlin, NV.

Jazz/Punk Raconteur Mike Dillon & Punkadelick makes its recorded debut with Inflorescence (Royal Potato Family), an album of heady, instrumental rock highlighting a band deep in the throes of creative freedom, road-tested and wild. Consisting of ten tracks and clocking in at 42 minutes, Inflorescence is an expansive, focused, and fearless collection, representing a world where Duke Ellington and Augustus Pablo rub shoulders with crate-digger exotica, the freak-funk of Parliament and the ‘anything fits’ outsider ethos of acid-fried punks like The Meat Puppets.

Punkadelic is a trio featuring Mike Dillon (Ricki Lee Jones, Ani DiFranco, Les Claypool) on vibraphone, marimba, Prophet 6, congas, and bongos; Brian Haas (Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey) on Fender Rhodes, piano, bass Moog and melodica; and Nikki Glaspie (Beyonce) on drums, cymbals and vocals. They're the unified vision of six hands creating a world that often sounds like the work of an ensemble three times the size!

During 2020 and 2021, while many music venues were still shuttered, Punkadelic began touring, sweating their way through cuts Dillon and Haas had composed during quarantine writing sessions. Locking in on stage, it quickly became clear Punkadelic was functioning at a level that made the hair on their arms stand at attention — even for three live music veterans accustomed to life on the road.

“It became obvious this had to become a collaboration,” said Dillon. “This is really something all three of us are doing because we have so much love for one another and a love for the music that we started creating.”

“There’s only three of us, but we move together like a big, nasty school of fish,” adds Haas.

During the tail end of a 2021 tour, the band booked time to record with engineer and functioning fourth Punkadelic band member Chad Meise, and Inflorescence sprouted. Opening track “Desert Monsoon” sets the stage with a spiritual-jazz intro of organ, vibraphone, percussion, and wordless vocal coos before crackling to life as a swaggering funk strut. The title track and “Pandas” dig into thick dub textures built around Glaspie’s drumming and Haas’s subwoofer-straining bass synths.

“Apocalypse Daydream,” which appeared as an exotic head-nodder on 2020’s Shoot the Moon (titled “Apocalyptic Daydreams”) is reborn as a meatier jazz-rock slab where Dillon and Haas circle each other like Television performing as a lounge act on a cruise ship sailing seas of psilocybin.

Bending ears and surprising audiences has long been part of Dillon’s MO; Glaspie and Haas act as perfect foils for forays into the weird. While Dillon bristles at the “punk jazz” tag, punk rock and jazz remain core influences to the band, in sound and spirit.

“We’re students of the titans of music. We grew up listening to punk and rock ’n’ roll but we also love instrumental music, particularly the forefathers of Black American Music. In our minds, Led Zeppelin and Milt Jackson, Parliament-Funkadelic and The Minutemen, The Bad Brains and Frank Zappa are interconnected influences,” explains Dillon. “All that comes together in how we approach instrumental creative music. Both punk rock and jazz are not prefab things, they’re about the freedom. We have no genre restriction in this band, and people who get it really respect that.”

Maybe the greatest example of the band’s punk-steeped, sonic free-for-all is “Slowly But Surely,” a track Dillon told Haas to compose as if he were “writing for Queens of the Stone Age.” The song plays like QOTSA translated to piano runs, vibes and deeply swinging drums/big-riff stoner rock upended and played with huge smiles by America’s premier proponents of the unclassifiable.

“We try to challenge our listeners,” Dillon says. “We’re touching a nerve with people who maybe don’t want to see the same songs done in the same variations all night long. Part of my mission is taking these instruments that are primarily designed for the orchestral or jazz world and taking them to the rock world, the club world, running them through pedals and effects. We’re not afraid to be soft, or to surprise. That’s what we all do in this band — get beyond our own conceptions of what music is supposed to be.”

“We are so blessed and lucky to do what we do for a living — it’s apparent in the music,” Glaspie adds. “It doesn’t matter how the day is going, but we get to the club, set up and crush the gig, all the other stuff doesn’t matter. We’re like-minded individuals who love life, love people and want to spread happiness.”

Southern Rock Royalty guitarist-vocalist-songwriter Duane Betts and Palmetto Hotel embark on their Spring Vacancy Tour, with a local performance at Mangy Moose Emporium, 3295 Village Drive, Friday, March 24. Show: 9pm. Tickets: $25. Info: (307) 733-4913 or visit https://mangymoose.com.

"We can’t wait to play some new tunes off the forthcoming record as well as tunes you may know and a few of the “classics,” says Betts. "Our buddy Charlie Overbay Music  will be opening select shows and selling his bad-ass Lone Hawk Hats. See you on destiny’s highway..."

Duane Betts: Some Background

As a teen, Duane Betts cut his teeth sitting in regularly with Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees The Allman Brothers Band. A native of Sarasota, Florida, Betts relocated to Southern California and fronted Malibu rock groups Backbone69 and Whitestarr, then ascended to a near-decade stint playing guitar alongside his father, Dickey Betts, in his dad's group, Great Southern. Whether as a touring guitarist for folk-rockers Dawes or sharing the stage with luminaries from Jack Johnson and G. Love to Kid Rock and Phil Lesh, Betts became a consummate musician. He continued to hone his craft in notable collaborations, including a brief but celebrated 2017 stint with Jamtown -- a super-group featuring Love, Donovan Frankenreiter, and Cisco Adler.

In 2018, Betts’ own impassioned, six-string stories portraying a life and a history steeped in blues, rock, and country music tradition, inspired the release of his first solo record, Sketches of American Music. With venerable guitar, time-worn vocals and enlightened, seasoned songwriting on a six-pack of instant favorites, Betts delivered five of his own freshly-drawn rock-and-roll portraits, brilliantly colored in country and blues, plus a special homage to his Rock-and-Roll Hall of Fame dad. Betts enlisted the guiding pen of respected song-smith Stoll Vaughan and veterans Steve Cropper (Booker T. & the M.G.’s) and Marc Ford (Black Crowes) for a production hand on sessions in Nashville and Los Angeles.

In support, Betts released two videos for the EP’s singles -- “Taking Time” and “Downtown Runaround" -- and undertook a world tour with the Devon Allman Project, fronted by the son of the late Gregg Allman. Betts also reunited with dad Dickey and his Band for a round of summer 2018 tour dates.

At year’s end Betts announced the formation of The Allman Betts Band, officially uniting with Devon Allman and Berry D. Oakley, son of the late Allman Brothers Band founding bassist, Berry Oakley. The group recorded tracks at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in November for its debut album, Down to the River, released in June, 2019. A world tour commenced in 2019 in New York City.

Duane Betts has picked up a lot along the way. With every note and every word, he’s showing what he’s learned, while holding with the utmost respect what’s been passed to him. “There are traits that are inherent. It’s in your sense of melody or with your phrasing. I think some of that stuff comes from hearing it a lot and from your instinct,” says Betts. “I have my own identity, too, and that’s my identity, for sure. I don’t think you could really get around that history if it’s there. I’m honored and I’m grateful to be a part of that legacy.”

Ally Venable, prolific Texas-based blues-rock guitarist/vocalist, is currently on her Real Gone Tour, with a local performance at The Spinning Jenny, 107 Cannon St., Friday, May 19. Show: 8pm. Tickets: $15. (advance), $20. (door). Info: (864) 469-6416 or visit thespinningjennygreer.com.

Texas blues/rock guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter Ally Venable has made her fiery presence known around the world since the release of her debut album at age sixteen.. Now, with her fifth solo effort Real Gone!, released on Ruf Records this past March, Venable has come of age.

At age 23, Venable is already an important artist in the roots music world. Her name has grown in stature with each new album and high-energy gig. She’s an absolutely ripping guitar player with style and tone for days, a commanding singer, and a songwriter with the power to make blues music that speaks to contemporary fans. Real Gone!, produced by Grammy winner Tom Hambridge (Buddy Guy, Susan Tedeschi), features guest appearances by Joe Bonamassa and living legend, Buddy Guy.

Venable is that rare musician who can take her old-school influences like Guy and Stevie Ray Vaughan and create music that brings their spirits to today’s listeners where they live. Together with Isaac Pulido (drums) and EJ Bedford (bass), Ally gives audiences an entertaining show packed with musical muscle and relatable songs about living, growing, and evolving. When asked where her songs emerge from, Venable replied, “I try to write about what goes on in my life, or try to write about something I know others can relate to. We all go through things and it’s okay to have feelings about something going on in your life.”

The first single from Real Gone! is “Texas Louisiana,” a crackling duet with the one-and-only Buddy Guy. Ally and Buddy are an absolute dream team together, intertwining their guitars and voices into one without either losing any identity or impact. The title track “Real Gone” is a straight-up, body-moving rocker that will also be released as a single. Venable shouts down the microphone like a star while her guitar snarls and sings.

On the soulful ballad “Next Time I See You,” Ally downshifts her vocals and shows every dynamic degree of her impressive range. Her guitar work here is equally lyrical and emotive, displaying a gift for phrasing that few players ever attain. The grinding slow jam “Blues Is My Best Friend” lays out the ups and downs of the guitar lifestyle in no uncertain terms and features some of Venable’s most intense playing and singing on the entire set. Ally’s deep, cliche-free authenticity is the common thread running through every song on Real Gone!. She speaks her mind without hesitation or apology, turning each track into an honest statement of purpose.

In 2022, Guitar World Magazine named Venable one of the Top 15 ‘Young Guns’ Making the Gibson Les Paul Cool Again,' and she also received the Road Warrior Award from the Independent Blues Music Awards. She performed as a featured artist on the Experience Hendrix Show in Austin, TX and appeared alongside Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Zack Wilde, Eric Johnson, Dweezil Zappa, and other luminaries.

2019’s Texas Honey and 2021’s Heart of Fire found Venable topping the Billboard charts. Early releases No Glass Shoes (2016) and Puppet Show (2018) created her fan-base, charted on radio, and won several East Texas Music Awards. Venable’s acclaimed performances on Ruf Records’ European Blues Caravan tour brought her international recognition. She has toured the U.S. with Buddy Guy and Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Canada with Colin James.

This year, Ally will be opening for Buddy Guy on his farewell tour, rocking Europe again on the Blues Caravan Tour, and doing her own headline shows domestically and abroad. She’s had a rapid rise to fame but gives off the vibe of someone who loves her life and is OK with it all.

Exit 56 Blues Festival celebrates the legacy of the Country Blues in the hometown of blues pioneers "Sleepy" John Estes, Hammie Nixon and Yank Rachell. Fourteen acts are set to perform over two days, May 27 and 28.

For over a decade Sugar Lime Blue has been committed to recording music that draws from several genres and their latest effort is no different. Recorded at the Historic Blackbird Studio in Nashville,TN, The Blackbird Sessions is a crossroads album in many ways for the Lebanon, TN-based quintet, signaling the end of an era while simultaneously ushering in a new one. Started prior to the Covid pandemic with basic tracking completed shortly after the release of their third album, Narcoluptuous (which was added on 120 FM stations), production came to a standstill Following the loss of SLB founding member and bassist Russ Dean in 2020.

Despite the loss, Ashley and Dave Beth remained committed to seeing the album through to completion, enlisting the services of bassist Joe Bass (Brian Howe) and keyboardist Scott Guberman (Phil Lesh) to complete the studio tracking. During this time the band also re-established a live presence -- embarking on several multi-state tours while adding members Luis "Slice" Echeverria on keyboards and Ikaika Pekelo on drums, both of whom also contributed to The Blackbird Sessions.

Sugar Lime Blue remains a strong presence in the Americana/Jam band scene, having played national festivals alongside mainstays Umphreys McGee, Moe, Ween, The Wood Brothers, and Buddy Guy, among others. With four albums released and over a decade of experience, SLB has performed nearly one-thousand concerts and has been featured in both national and international press.

If you like music to be more than just the background noise in your life, check out Sugar Lime Blue next time they come to your town. The band feeds off the energy of their fans and puts their hearts into every show. We only have a short time on this planet and making the moment inclusive to all that hear and enjoy the sound is what it’s all about for them. Playing music is the ultimate group expression in creativity and Sugar Lime Blue is a family bound by love and music -- with the ultimate goal to be able to spread that music love around.

The 'Piana From Savannah', acclaimed 2019 Grammy-nominated American Roots artist Victor Wainwright and the Train is full swing into his Summer 2023 Tour, with a local performance headlining the Prairie Dog Blues Festival, St. Feriole Island Park, 101 N. 4th St., Friday, July 28. Set Time: 9:30pm. Tickets start at $40. Info: (608) 326-0085 or visit prairiedogblues.com.

The powerhouse pianist-vocalist-organist was nominated last year in the Piano category for the Blues Blast Awards and was also nominated by the Living Blues Awards in two categories: Most Outstanding Musician (keyboard); and Best Live Performer.

Though his career began over a decade ago with genuine rock n’ roll honky-tonk, Wainwright has broadened his artistic scope over the years to include music representing virtually every corner of the roots music world. His insatiable interest in music discovery, sheer love for entertaining and curiosity have led him all around the world, and the resulting perspective is a reflection of his passion for entertaining and creating progressive roots music in an effort to move the art-form forward. Composer, producer, vocalist, and award wining entertainer and piano player; Victor Wainwright is a raucous high-octane, dynamic performer and crowd pleaser with soul to spare..

The name of Victor Wainwright’s band – and the sleeve image of their albums – is also the most fitting of metaphors. In music folklore, the train might have associations with the freight-hopping bluesmen of yore, but with this restless boogie-woogie innovator stoking the furnace, Wainwright is a charging locomotive – surging forward, crashing through boundaries of genre, sweeping up fresh sounds and clattering headlong past the doubters. Among his numerous accolades: Wainwright has won six total Blues Music Awards, reached #1 on the Top 10 on the U.S. Billboard chart, and was Nominated for a 2019 Grammy.

Devon Allman and Donavon Frankenreiter, rock 'n' roll recording artists and globe-trotting journeymen, embark on their 'See It All' American Tour, with a local performance at Rams Head Onstage, 31 West St., Saturday, August 5. Show: 1pm. All ages. Tickets: $65. Info: (410) 268-4545 or visit ramsheadonstage.com.

The See It All American Tour kicks off August 5 with two shows in one day, first in Maryland and then in Pennsylvania. From there, the tour will officially take off, bringing those road warriors to places they've never been, at a pace that's never been done, testing their wills at every turn, before wrapping September 22 in California at BeachLife Ranch, the second annual coastal country SoCal festival co-founded by Frankenreiter, with hopeful celebrations. Throughout the tour, Devon and Donavon will perform a collaborative set, including the music from Rollers as well as each of their own solo songs, with a four-piece backing band. Along the way, they'll be joined nightly by rotating support acts: Matt Andersen, JD Simo, Matt Costa, Davey Knowles, Mishka, Jackson Stokes, and Goodnight Texas. Tickets are on sale now; visit www.devonanddonavon.com for more info and to purchase. See below for a full list of tour dates.

Allman and Frankenreiter will attempt to set the official world record with fifty shows in fifty states in less than fifty days. The tour runs from August 5 through September 22. The duo has just released their new collaborative EP Rollers on Allman's Create Records. The six-song collection, produced by Luther Dickinson of the multiple Grammy-nominated Mississippi All-Stars and mastered by Brad Sarno at Blue Jade Audio, features the previously-released singles "Calling All You Riders" and "See It All" as well as a guest appearance by Maggie Rose on the new track "We Belong." The songs on Rollers serve as the soundtrack for the See It All Tour, which will find Allman and Frankenreiter attempt to set the official world record for the faster time to play a concert in each of the fifty states, currently fifty in fifty days, set in 2003. The concept is simple, but the execution will be brutal as the longtime friends seek to complete the challenge in forty-nine days.

"We are so stoked for Rollers to roll out into the universe!," exclaims Allman. "Each song is like a scene from a movie...there's definitely a cinematic aesthetic poppin'. I would also posit, it's quite green-friendly. Enjoy the roll."

Adds Frankenreiter, "we are going to see it all on this tour and we're so excited to have a soundtrack to go along with this world record attempt."

Rollers, available now digitally and in CD format\ with vinyl to follow later this Summer, opens with the dark country and western vibes of "Calling All you Riders," inviting listeners along on their upcoming American journey where they will "See It All." Devon and Donavon can both be heard singing on every song, often at once, with rising rock 'n' soul singer Maggie Rose adding her beautiful vocals to "We Belong." Following the rockin' "Where Ya Gonna Run To?," Rollers rides off into the sunset with the instrumental "Acapulco Gold."

For nearly four decades, Donavon Frankenreiter has been traveling the globe, first as a professional surfer and now as a musician. With over a dozen albums under his belt, Frankenreiter has worked it on the touring trail worldwide for three decades, entertaining audiences with his unique blend of laid-back grooves, philosophical lyrics, and soulful delivery. Donavon is a brand ambassador for Flying Embers as well as Sanuk Footwear and also co-owner of Humble Brands, Caddis Eyewear and several other companies.

Blues Music Award-winning singer, guitarist, songwriter, and producer Devon Allman (son of rock legend Greg Allman) has performed at the world's biggest festivals and co-founded the super-groups Royal Southern Brotherhood and the Allman Betts Band, amassing a recording catalog of eleven albums. Allman also writes a column for Guitar Player Magazine, is endorsed by Gibson guitars, and serves on the Board of Directors for the National Blues Museum.

The Blues Foundation is proud to launch its 44th year with a tribute to the 2024 Keeping The Blues Alive (KBA) honorees during the International Blues Challenge week, from Tuesday, January 16 through Saturday, January 20.

This year's KBA recipients include John Hall, Jacques Garcia, Larry Chambers, Laura Carbone, Lee Oskar, Mark Stenzler, The Columbus Blues Alliance, and Blues Association Turkey.

Chosen annually by a distinguished panel of blues professionals, the KBA Awards honor individuals and organizations that have played vital roles in promoting the art and business of the blues. The 2024 honorees will be celebrated for their contributions at the Keeping The Blues Alive Awards brunch on Friday, January 19, 2024, at 10:30 AM, located at the Hyatt Centric in Memphis.

The awards ceremony is a highlight of the Blues Foundation's 39th Annual International Blues Challenge, which begins on Monday, January 16, 2024. The week's events start with the International Showcase on historic Beale Street and culminate with the Finals at the Orpheum Theatre in Memphis on Saturday, January 20, at 12 PM. More than a thousand musicians from around the world will converge in Memphis to vie for the prestigious International Blues Challenge title. Along with prizes and bookings, this event is the world's most esteemed blues music competition. Attendees can also enjoy showcases, jams, panels, workshops, and master classes throughout Beale Street, with the music lasting into the early hours of the morning after each day's IBC challenger performances.

The 2024 Keeping The Blues Alive Awards proudly recognizes the following recipients for their significant contributions to the blues genre:

John Hall
Since his high school days in 1971, John Hall's passion for blues music has only grown. His extensive involvement within the blues community includes operating Rhythm Room Records, producing leading blues festivals in Massachusetts, and founding events like The Green Harbor Roots Festival and the North River Blues Festival. He has also contributed to hurricane relief efforts for New Orleans musicians and served in various capacities with WATD 95.9 and the Boston Blues Society. Hall's participation in benefit concerts and judging local blues competitions underscores his lifelong dedication to the blues, making him a deserving recipient of this year's award.

Jacques Garcia
Jacques Garcia's transformative experience with Muddy Waters sparked a lifelong dedication to the blues. With his wife Anne-Marie, he has been instrumental in nurturing the blues scene in France, notably through the Salaise Blues Festival and Rhésus Blues Productions. Garcia's founding of the Black Jack Blues Association, managing a blues club and festival in Ampuis, and organizing significant events like the Robert Johnson 100th Anniversary Celebration are testaments to his impact. His efforts with La Maison du Blues, including the European Blues Museum, and the Blues Preservation Association, have made an indelible mark on blues promotion and preservation in France.

Larry Chambers
Larry Chambers has made his mark as a songwriter for Fame Records, contributing to the repertoire of artists like Wilson Pickett and Candi Staton. His work at Muscle Shoals Sound Studio and Malaco Records, coupled with engineering and promoting roles, has significantly shaped the soul/blues genre. At Ecko Records, he has continued to influence the industry, with his songwriting prowess evident in hits like "I'll Drink Your Bathwater, Baby." Chambers' enduring role in promoting talented blues artists makes him a worthy honoree.

Laura Carbone
Laura Carbone, a New York-based photographer, has captured the essence of the blues for global publications. Her promotion efforts have brought artists to new regions and supported educational initiatives like Blues in the Schools. Carbone's philanthropy includes donating her photos to fundraisers and supporting aspiring young musicians. Her dedication to the blues, often without seeking recognition, showcases her commitment and warrants her recognition with a KBA Award.

Lee Oskar
Lee Oskar, a harmonica virtuoso and founder of Lee Oskar Harmonicas, has been a major supporter of The Blues Foundation. His innovative contributions to the harmonica industry and his role in the successful group WAR have earned him global acclaim. Oskar's support of blues initiatives and events reflects his dedication to the music community, making him an esteemed award recipient.

Mark Stenzler
Mark Stenzler's career in radio broadcasting has been marked by his love for the blues. His show, Blues Zeppelin, has become a staple for blues enthusiasts and has been instrumental in promoting blues musicians and festivals. Stenzler's role in the growth of the blues genre and his support for artists' careers make him an exemplary recipient of the KBA Award.

Columbus Blues Alliance
The Columbus Blues Alliance, celebrating its 34th anniversary, has been vital in promoting the blues in Ohio. Their work with local blues societies, music venues, educational initiatives, and support for artists, especially during the pandemic, has fortified the state's blues scene. Their recognition with a KBA Award celebrates their dedication to the blues community.

Blues Association Turkey
Goksenin Tuncali, known as the "Turkish Xena of the Blues," has significantly shaped Turkey's blues community. As the founding president of the Blues Association of Turkey, Tuncali's initiatives have fostered young talent, promoted female musicians, and introduced traditional American blues to Turkish audiences. The Association's efforts in education and preservation of the blues make it a fitting recipient of the KBA Award.

The 8th annual New Orleans Cigar Box Guitar Festival at the New Orleans Jazz Museum from Thursday, January 18 through Saturday, January 20 offers a stellar celebration of the art, music and history of homemade stringed instruments in the city where those devices played a role in the early development of Jazz and Blues.

Over the course of the three-day event, performances will be staged featuring guitar phenom Erin Coburn, Louisiana Blues veteran Lil' Jimmy Reed and Louisiana Music Hall of Fame inductee Jonathon “Boogie” Long, plus Cigar Box Serenaders, Ghalia Volt, Steve Arvey, John Nickel, La Durance Blues Band, Memphis Lightning, John Mary Go Round and a dozen other top cigar box guitar performers.

During the Thursday Night Symposium, second-generation Louisiana Blues musician and highly acclaimed actor Chris Thomas King will discuss his book, The Blues: The Authentic Narrative of My Music and Culture, while noted New Orleans visual artist Charles Gillam will talk about his folk-art guitars.  An instrument builders’ forum and contest is slated for Friday afternoon.

Only one-hundred-and-fifty all-inclusive tickets are being sold to this unique and intimate cultural experience.  All aspects of the event will be held within the comfortable confines of the Jazz Museum.  Further information and tickets are available on the website: NewOrleansCBG.com.

The New Orleans Cigar Box Guitar Festival (NOCBGF) was founded in 2016 and quickly gained a reputationfor outstanding entertainment.  The 2019 edition won Offbeat Magazine's "Neighborhood Festival of the Year" award.  In  2020, NOCBGF partnered with internationally-acclaimed singer/guitarist Samantha Fish to expand the growth and outreach of the festival and the cigar box guitar.  The global pandemic forced the 2021 shows to go virtual, with two nights of supercharged video streamed via Mandolin.com. Continued pandemic concerns caused the festival to be canceled in 2022.  A return to live performances this past January at NOCBGF 2023 was a thrill for everyone involved, and the upcoming festivities promise be just as satisfying.

Throughout U. S. history, pioneers, Civil War soldiers, farmhands, street singers and other resourceful musicians found ways to build expressive instruments from household items and random hardware, most notably in Appalachia and the Mississippi Delta.

“Cigar Box Guitar” is a catchall phrase used to describe the general category of improvised stringed musical devices consisting of banjos, basses, dulcimers, fiddles, mandolins, and what-have-you. Many musicians throughout the world are currently using homemade gear to record, perform live, or play at home, making these unique instruments and their authentic, traditional sound a staple of today’s music scene.

Entering the Blues Hall of Fame as a Classic of Blues Literature is Blues Legacies and Black Feminism: Gertrude "Ma" Rainey, Bessie Smith, and Billie Holiday, by Angela Davis (Pantheon, 1998) chronicles Angela Davis, controversial activist, author, and professor widely known for her revolutionary politics, argues against some conventional views of women and their songs in the blues.

Since its inception in 1980, The Blues Foundation has inducted new members annually into the Blues Hall of Fame for their historical contribution, impact, and overall influence on the Blues. Members are inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in five categories: Performers, Individuals, Classic of Blues Literature, Classic of Blues Recording (Song), and Classic of Blues Recording (Album). Over the years The Blues Foundation has inducted over 400 industry professionals, recordings, and literature into the Blues Hall of Fame.

MEET THE CLASS OF 2024

Lurrie Bell, a prominent figure in the blues world, follows in the footsteps of his late father, harmonica maestro Carey Bell, who was inducted into the Blues Hall of Fame in 2023. Born on December 13, 1958, in Chicago, Lurrie developed into an extraordinary blues guitarist during the 1970s, displaying remarkable talent even as a teenager. Despite facing personal trauma and tragedy throughout his life, Lurrie's enduring passion for music has carried him into his senior years with the same youthful exuberance. Growing up in a musical environment, Lurrie drew inspiration from his father's musical circle, notably guitarist Eddie Taylor. His early experiences included playing in a band with pianist Lovie Lee, the musician credited with bringing Carey Bell to Chicago from Mississippi. Lurrie's childhood also involved living in Mississippi and Alabama, where he played gospel music in church alongside his Bell brothers, collectively known as "The Ding Dongs." Lurrie's journey into professional music began in 1977 when he recorded on a session with his father, Carey Bell, and played bass on an Eddie C. Campbell album. That same year, he joined forces with Billy Branch and other emerging blues musicians in the "New Generation of Chicago Blues" package in Berlin. The collaboration with Branch evolved into the Sons of the Blues (S.O.B.) band, solidifying Lurrie's status as one of the rising stars in the blues scene. His guitar skills and innate understanding of the blues genre gained recognition as he recorded with various artists, including Koko Taylor, Eddy Clearwater, Sunnyland Slim, and Louisiana Red. Despite personal challenges, including periods of depression, isolation, and life on the streets, Lurrie's musical talents continued to captivate audiences. His life took a challenging turn with the passing of his partner, photographer Susan Greenberg, and the heartbreaking loss of their twin babies. Carey Bell's death in 2007 added to the hardships, yet Lurrie's unique musical abilities served as a lifeline, bringing him back to a sense of sanity. Over the years, Lurrie faced personal challenges, but his musical journey persisted. Amberly Stokes, a devoted supporter and former Rosa's Lounge employee, became Lurrie Bell's advocate. Under her care and management, he found stability, a supportive home life, and renewed worldwide acclaim for his remarkable talent. Lurrie's enduring contribution to the blues genre, resilience, and  captivating performances solidified his place in the Blues Hall of Fame.

Odetta, hailed as "The Mother Goddess of Folk Blues" by The New York Times, left an indelible mark on the world of folk music for five decades. Her influential career not only showcased her extraordinary musical talents but also paved the way for others, breaking barriers as a woman and an African American in the folk milieu. Born Odetta Holmes on December 31, 1930, in Birmingham, Alabama, she spent most of her childhood in Los Angeles. Classically trained in college, Odetta possessed a versatile repertoire that spanned blues, spirituals, jazz, songs from various folk and popular traditions, and original topical songs reflecting her commitment as a civil rights activist. Although she occasionally worked the blues club and festival circuit, her blues credentials were undeniable, evident in albums like "Odetta Sings Blues and Ballad," "Odetta and the Blues," "Blues Everywhere I Go," and "Lookin for a Home," a compilation featuring songs associated with Lead Belly. Her remarkable career included performances in Martin Scorsese's 2003 "Salute to the Blues" concert, Divas film in Clarksdale, Mississippi, and appearances at the Apollo Theater in Harlem and Blues Foundation events. Odetta, who was once married to blues singer Louisiana Red, enchanted audiences with her magnetic stage presence and powerful voice, captivating listeners whether singing solo or collaborating with symphony orchestras, jazz bands, ballet troupes, opera companies, or all-star musical aggregations. Odetta's commitment to social justice was evident as she sang at historic events like the March on Washington and the Selma, Alabama March, as well as at human rights and anti-war rallies. She used her voice not only to entertain but also to advocate for change, performing at benefits, tribute concerts, and schools. Throughout her illustrious career, Odetta collaborated with luminaries such as Harry Belafonte, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Nina Simone, Maya Angelou, and Pete Seeger. Her influence extended to artists like Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin, Joan Baez, Rhiannon Giddens, Eric Bibb, and countless others. Honored by U.S. presidents, the Library of Congress, and numerous organizations worldwide, Odetta continued to perform even in the face of declining health. She passed away in New York on December 2, 2008, leaving behind a legacy that transcends music, resonating in the realms of humanitarianism and education.

Jimmy Rushing, affectionately known as "Mr. Five By Five" due to his stout stature, was a groundbreaking figure in the world of blues and jazz. Born on June 15 or August 26, 1899 (though he often cited a 1901 birth-date), in Oklahoma City, James Andrew Rushing pioneered the big band blues belting style, leaving an indelible mark on the genre and influencing subsequent blues shouters like Big Joe Turner, Wynonie Harris, and Roy Brown. Inspired by an uncle, Rushing began his blues journey in California in 1923, where he played piano with Jelly Roll Morton before returning to Oklahoma. He sang in various territory bands, including Walter Page's Blue Devils, and joined Bennie Moten's Kansas City Orchestra, marking the beginning of his association with legendary jazz figures. Rushing recorded or performed with luminaries such as Count Basie, Buck Clayton, Benny Goodman, Dizzy Gillespie, Earl "Fatha" Hines, and others. He was the vocalist on the Johnny Otis orchestra's inaugural record in 1945 and reunited with Otis at the 1970 Monterey Jazz Festival. Rushing's pivotal recordings with the popular Basie band, starting in 1935, catapulted him to national prominence. Hits like "Good Morning Blues," "Going to Chicago," and "Sent for You Yesterday and Here You Come Today" showcased his commanding vocal presence and marked him as a leading figure in the big band era. He played a significant role in bringing blues to a broader audience. After moving to New York City in the 1950s, Rushing continued his prolific recording and touring career. He worked with various labels, including Vanguard, Columbia, ABC BluesWay, and RCA, releasing albums like "Livin' the Blues" and "The You and Me That Used to Be." Despite battling leukemia in his final years, Rushing continued to receive accolades, posthumously winning a Down Beat magazine poll as Best Male Singer shortly after his death in June 1972. Rushing's contributions to blues and jazz were immeasurable, bridging the gap between the genres and influencing a wide array of singers. Although recognition may have faded among more recent generations of blues enthusiasts, his impact on blues, jazz, pop, and rhythm & blues remains undeniable. Rushing's career reached far and wide, spreading the appeal of the blues to a broader audience than ever imagined.

Scrapper Blackwell, born Francis Hillman Blackwell, left an indelible mark on the blues scene as a virtuoso guitarist and collaborator with Blues Hall of Famer Leroy Carr. Though widely recognized for his role in the iconic Carr-Blackwell duo during their recording zenith from 1928 to 1935, Blackwell's musical prowess extended far beyond accompaniment. Born on February 21, 1903 (though birth details remain uncertain, with some evidence pointing to Indianapolis in 1904), Blackwell, of Cherokee and African-American descent, began his artistic journey crafting makeshift guitars as a child. His entry into the blues arena was catalyzed when he joined forces with Leroy Carr in 1928. The duo's sessions yielded timeless classics, with hits like "How Long—How Long Blues" making them a household name. Despite their success, Carr's untimely death in 1935 led Blackwell to retreat from music, only to be rediscovered by local fans in the 1950s. His raw talent and unique guitar style were showcased in solo recordings and collaborations with emerging musicians. Yazoo Records acknowledged his unparalleled guitar skills, emphasizing his ability to blend heavy bass sections and intricate treble-string runs. In the 1950s, Indianapolis jazz scholar Duncan Schiedt reintroduced Blackwell to a new generation of fans who admired his old recordings. Despite facing periods of unemployment, Blackwell continued to play in local taverns and mentor aspiring musicians. His unexpected encounters with old admirers led to concert performances and recordings, contributing to the folk-blues revival of the late 1950s and early 1960s. Nicknamed "Scrapper" for his youthful inclination for tussles, Blackwell's life was marked by both musical triumphs and personal challenges. His journey came to an unfortunate end on October 7, 1962, when he was discovered in an Indianapolis alley, having succumbed to two .22 caliber bullets. Despite the tragic circumstances surrounding his death, Scrapper Blackwell's legacy endures through his timeless contributions to the blues genre.

William R. "Bill" Ferris, a prominent figure in the world of blues, is celebrated for his multifaceted contributions as an author, folklorist, professor, lecturer, and administrator. Born on February 5, 1942, in Vicksburg, Mississippi, Ferris has played a pivotal role in documenting and preserving the rich cultural heritage of the American South, particularly in the realms of blues, gospel, and storytelling. Ferris initiated his work in the 1960s by recording, photographing, and filming blues musicians, gospel singers, and storytellers in Mississippi. His family's farm in Vicksburg served as the backdrop for his early documentation efforts. Ferris focused not only on the musical aspects of the artists but delved into the broader context of their lives, folk traditions, and stories, providing a unique and comprehensive perspective on the cultural significance of the music within their communities. Having earned several college degrees, including a PhD in Folklore from the University of Pennsylvania, Ferris embarked on a career as an educator. He taught at institutions such as Jackson State University and Yale University in the 1970s. Ferris co-founded the Center for Southern Folklore in Memphis and later directed the Center for the Study of Southern Culture at the University of Mississippi. His involvement in preserving blues history included hosting the "Highway 61" radio show and releasing recordings on the Southern Culture label. Ferris's contributions extended to the acquisition of Living Blues magazine and significant materials, including B.B. King's record collection, which formed the core of the Blues Archive at the University of Mississippi. He took on a role at the University of North Carolina in 2002 as a professor and Associate Director of the Center for the Study of the American South. His literary works, notably Blues From the Delta (1970) and Give My Poor Heart Ease: Voices of the Mississippi Blues (2009), showcase his commitment to exploring the social and cultural dimensions of the blues. Ferris's comprehensive efforts received widespread acclaim, with Blues From the Delta earning recognition as a Classic of Blues Literature by the Blues Hall of Fame in 1998. One of Ferris's remarkable achievements is the Dust-to-Digital box set Voices of Mississippi: Artists and Musicians Documented by William Ferris, which won a GRAMMY in 2019. This extensive project includes multi-media presentations featuring live performances from renowned artists like Bobby Rush, Sharde Thomas, and Luther and Cody Dickinson, further solidifying Ferris's impact on the preservation and celebration of Southern musical heritage.

Sugar Pie DeSanto packed astonishing power and plenty of personality into a tiny frame. Her spunk and vigor impressed bandleader and producer Johnny Otis enough to sign her to her first recording session in 1955 after witnessing her performance at a San Francisco talent show. It was Otis who named her Sugar Pie in preference to using her given name, Peylia Balinton. A ballet student as a child, she was born in Brooklyn on October 16, 1935, to a Filipino father and African American mother, but grew up in the Bay Area and continued to live there except for a spell in Chicago when she was with Chess Records in the 1960s. After her 1955 debut for Federal Records, Sugar Pie recorded a few more singles, often with her husband, guitarist Alvin Parham, aka Pee Wee Kingsley, acquiring the DeSanto moniker from producer/DJ/club owner Don Barksdale. Her biggest hit, “I Want to Know,” produced by Bob Geddins on the Veltone label, rose to No. 4 on Billboard’s R&B chart in 1960 and led to a contract with Chess. The DeSanto magic also energized the already dynamic James Brown revue for two years. During her tenure with Chess, she had some hits on the subsidiary Checker label, including “Slip-In Mules,” an answer to Tommy Tucker’s “Hi-Heel Sneakers, and “In the Basement” on the Cadet imprint, a duet with longtime friend Etta James, who was often at the Balinton home as a youngster. Sugar Pie’s records also clicked with the Northern Soul crowd in England, enough so that she left the all-star cast of the 1964 American Folk Blues Festival’s European tour to make U.K. appearances of her own. Under various names including Peylia Parham and P. Parham DeSanto she began writing songs for other artists at Chess, including Billy Stewart, Fontella Bass, and Little Milton. Sugar Pie took her act back to Oakland and remained active and still saucy even into her octogenarian years, a local favorite as well as a world traveler. When times were slow, she worked as a paralegal. The Rhythm & Blues Foundation provided support after she lost her husband Jessie Davis in a fire at their apartment. The Foundation also presented her with a Pioneer Award, one of several honors she has earned from various sponsors, including the Arhoolie Foundation and Blues Blast magazine. She found a recording home with her manager James C. Moore’s Jasman label, which began releasing DeSanto’s output in 1972, sprinkling her catalog with titles befitting her persona such as Sugar Is Salty, Refined Sugar, and Sugar’s Suite.

O.V. Wright, recognized for his powerful fusion of blues, soul, and gospel, brought unparalleled emotion-drenched intensity to his music. Born Overton Vertis Wright on October 9, 1939, in Lenow, Tennessee, near Memphis, he began his musical journey singing church music and later professionally with the Sunset Travelers. Despite his deep roots in gospel, O.V. Wright transitioned to secular music, making a significant impact with his unique blend of blues. Wright's early success came with the Goldwax label in Memphis, where his debut R&B record, "That's How Strong My Love Is," showcased his impressive vocal prowess. However, legal battles ensued over contractual obligations, eventually leading him to the Back Beat label owned by Don Robey of Peacock Records. Back Beat became the platform for many of Wright's notable recordings, including hits like "You're Gonna Make Me Cry" and "Eight Men, Four Women." Willie Mitchell and the Hi Rhythm Section played a crucial role in shaping the sound of Wright's music, leading to several successful collaborations in the '70s, such as "Ace of Spade" and "A Nickel and a Nail." Mitchell, known for his work with Al Green, praised Wright as his most consistent artist in the studio. Onstage, O.V. Wright delivered dynamic performances often likened to that of a preacher, seamlessly.
blending verses from the blues and the Bible. While he found success on the chitlin circuit, health issues, a criminal record, and a narcotics conviction hindered his career. In his final years, Wright continued performing, leaving a lasting mark on stages across the country. He passed away on November 16, 1980, while performing at Joe's Supper Club in Grand Bay, Alabama. His legacy lives on through a core global following that includes hip-hop artists who have sampled his music. In 2008, a group of fans honored him with a headstone, acknowledging his profound impact on the worlds of blues, soul, and gospel. Johnny Rawls and Otis Clay recorded a tribute CD, "Remembering O.V.," ensuring that O.V. Wright's contributions to music endure.

Lil' Ed and The Blues Imperials stand as a testament to the enduring power of tight-knit, infectiously cheerful blues bands. Led by singer and slide guitar maestro Lil' Ed Williams, the group, which includes his half-brother and bassist James "Pookie" Young, along with Mike Garrett on guitar and Kelly Littleton on drums, has been making music together for over thirty-five years. Their energetic brand of boogie blues finds its roots in the legacy of another Chicago slide master, Ed's uncle and mentor J.B. Hutto, a Blues Hall of Fame inductee in 1985. The Blues Imperials, inspired by a TV commercial for Imperial margarine, burst onto the scene in 1986 when Alligator Records owner Bruce Iglauer invited them to record two songs for a compilation. In true Chicago blues lore fashion, the session turned into a lively party, resulting in 30 songs in three hours and securing Lil' Ed and the Blues Imperials a contract for their debut album, "Roughhousin'." This milestone allowed Lil' Ed to bid farewell to his job at a local car wash. Born on April 4, 1955, in Chicago, Ed Williams passionately embraced a style reminiscent of his uncle J.B., both vocally and instrumentally. Mirroring Hutto's iconic look, Ed even dons a fez during performances. His acrobatic showmanship and humorous stage presence brought a good-time element to the blues, captivating audiences and earning him a dedicated following of fez-wearing "Ed Heads." Despite a brief hiatus in the 1990s for solo projects, Lil' Ed and The Blues Imperials regrouped, rejoining Alligator Records, and solidifying their status as label mainstays. With nine albums to their credit, the core quartet, occasionally featuring saxophonist Eddie McKinley, has consistently delivered upbeat live shows and recordings, embodying the trademark "Genuine Houserocking Music" associated with
Alligator Records. The band's energetic performances continue to perpetuate the spirit of their influences, including Hound Dog Taylor and the HouseRockers, ensuring that the legacy of Lil' Ed and The Blues Imperials remains synonymous with high-octane blues that genuinely rocks the house.

Renowned Louisiana Bayou blues guitarist, Tab Benoit, is set to embark on his much-anticipated 2024 Night Train Tour, starting with a local performance at Chelsea's Live, located at 1010 Nicholson Drive, Baton Rouge, LA, on Friday, February 23. The show starts at 8pm, with tickets priced at $35. For more information, call (225) 256-7676 or visit www.chelseaslive.com. JD Simo will also be performing.

Tab Benoit, celebrated for his significant contribution to the blues genre, hails from the lush Bayous of Southern Louisiana. Known for his unique guitar tone and soulful vocals reminiscent of Otis Redding, Benoit's music setup is remarkably straightforward, comprising just a guitar, cord, and Category 5 Amplifier. The effects you hear are purely a product of his skillful playing.

Born on November 17, 1967, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and raised in Houma, Benoit was introduced to music at an early age, influenced by traditional Cajun waltzes and country music. Despite starting on drums, he shifted to guitar to adapt to the gig opportunities available in his community, often in churches and at church fairs.

Benoit's professional journey in blues began in the late '80s at the Blues Box in Baton Rouge. His first recording, "Nice and Warm," was released in 1992, marking the start of a prolific touring and recording career that spans over two decades. With a discography that includes albums under Justice Records, Vanguard, and more recently, Telarc International/Concord Music Group, Benoit has solidified his status as Louisiana's premier blues export.

In addition to his musical achievements, Benoit founded the Voice of the Wetlands non-profit organization, leveraging his platform to advocate for Louisiana's coastal erosion issues. His 2004 release, "Wetlands," and subsequent albums further showcase his evolution as an artist, blending various musical styles indigenous to Louisiana.

In 2011, Benoit's album "Medicine" earned him the title of "BB King Entertainer of the Year" at the 2012 Blue Music Awards in Memphis. Following this, Benoit, along with his manager Rueben Williams, launched Whiskey Bayou Records, spotlighting deserving artists within the blues genre.

Tab Benoit continues to make waves in the music industry, and his 2024 Night Train Tour promises to be an unforgettable experience for fans across the US. Don't miss the opportunity to see this American troubadour live in action.

About Grand County Blues Society: The Grand County Blues Society (GCBS) non-profit (501c3) was created in 2002 to enhance the cultural existence of Grand County residents and to be a beacon for our friends and visitors that love escaping to the shadow of the Continental Divide. For well over a decade, the GCBS has produced twenty-one Blues Festivals, over two hundred and eighty five individual blues concerts, and has continued its support of our primary programs.

Check Out The Music: The Grand County Blues Society has been a pioneer in the realm of blues music education. School-age kids across Grand County are lucky to have been immersed in the blues. Not only have they been entertained by all the programs that have come their way, they have been on the stage, creating their own “bluesical” and giving performances on the festival stages over the years.

Blue Star Connection (BSC) is our most notable program and in it’s nineteenth year, has supplied over ninety two Children’s Hospitals with valuable and plentiful collections of musical instruments for their music therapy departments. BSC has also gifted over eight-hundred individual children personal instruments. We continue to support the music therapy industry with constant fund-raising and an all-out effort to continue the mission of BSC. Music Therapy needs an advocate, and we are proud to be considered a front-runner. We have done all of this with an all-volunteer board, and a very loyal and generous membership.
