The Village of Patchogue Protecting the Environment Committee (PEP) and The Great South Bay Music Festival have launched The GSB-PEP Project to showcase at this year’s Great South Bay Music Festival held at Shore Front Park in Patchogue from July 18-21, 2019.

The GSB-PEP Project, one of the first of its kind in Suffolk County, is a collaborative initiative between the Patchogue Village: Protecting the Environment in Patchogue Committee (PEP) and the Great South Bay Music Festival. The goal of the project is to reduce the eco-footprint of the Great South Bay Music Festival, while bringing awareness to the importance of developing sustainable communities, and providing a blueprint for festivals and events regionally.

Large-scale festivals provide a boost to the local economy but can also leave behind a substantial eco-footprint; The GSB-PEP Project will offer net-positive alternatives for both sides. This year’s festival will focus on the reduction of waste, carbon emissions, and a public awareness campaign for everyday practices that create sustainable communities, businesses, and festivals.

The overall goal of The GSB-PEP Project will be to work towards a 25-50-75 percent overall reduction by 2025. (Reducing incrementally over the years) The success of the initiatives instituted at The Great South Bay Music Festival will serve as a blueprint for other festivals in the Village of Patchogue and throughout the region.

“After the enthusiasm for the launch of the Green Business Program in Patchogue Village, expanding common sense sustainable practices to events in the Village was the next logical step”, stated Joseph Keyes, Village Trustee and PEP Committee Chairman.

The proposal to Jim Faith, Festival Organizer was received with the same enthusiasm: “Creating a sustainable festival has been a goal of mine for a very long time. This partnership will ensure that we can reduce the festivals footprint, and create a buzz among festival goers to make informed everyday eco-choices.”

A few highlights of the project include:

Reduction of water bottles

Providing a water refilling station

Use of recyclable cups

“Straw by request” policy, no single use plastic bags or Styrofoam

Promotion of public transportation

Public awareness campaign through Eco-Art created by local artists, students, and community members

“Working to create a more sustainable future for Long Island has always been one of our core values at Suffolk County Water Authority,” said Water Authority Chief Executive Officer Jeffrey W. Szabo. “Providing potable water for the Great South Bay Music Festival was a no-brainer for us, honestly.  Not only will it keep festival-goers cool and hydrated, but it eliminates the need for plastic water bottles, which we know are a large source of pollution, especially for events of this size.”

The success of the project is a multi-pronged partnership whose success is built upon the support of local government, businesses and the community as a whole.  “Joining in this incredible effort was an easy choice,” added Jon McMahon, Partner at MFB Events, provider of concession services for the festival “we all want to do our part in ensuring a greener future for our communities.”

Wed, 04/07/2021 - 9:03 am

The Great South Bay Music Festival, Long Islands largest, and longest running four-day music & arts festival, is being postponed to July of 2022.

The new dates are July 7 through 10, 2022 and will set up at its original home at Shorefront Park in Patchogue.

The decision was based on the numbing amount of uncertainty related to Covid compliance and safety, cost increases, artist discomfort and the now shortened lead time to successfully and safely produce a festival of this size.

“I find it hard to fathom that I must again announce that The Great South Bay Music Festival has been re-scheduled.  The disappointment that we feel, first losing the 2020 and now the 2021 festival to this pandemic is maddening, but the health and safety of our attendees, artists, fest workers and community is our top priority.  The very last thing we want to do is push forward based on impatience or greed.” say’s festival Producer, Jim Faith.

The Great South Bay Music Festival is pleased to report that Sunday headliners The Tedeschi Trucks Band, Wheels of Soul Tour, after cancelling their own 2021 tour plans, have re-signed on to perform at Great South Bay 2022 on July 10 and have added the legendary Los Lobos to support. Producers are expected to re-confirm most of the 2021 headliners shortly. All 2020 and 2021 tickets will be honored for GSB 2022 and no further action is necessary. Refunds will again be offered with information forthcoming.

From Blue Point Brewing Co.:

Blue Point Brewing Co. is excited to continue our synchronistic sponsorship of the GSB Music Festival in 2022.  We are all disappointed that it needs to be postponed but with the current conditions, it is the prudent move.  At Blue Point we were looking forward to releasing a new brew for the fest. I guess we will have to drink it ourselves. By the time next summer comes around everyone will be more than ready to Rock and Roll at the premier music event on the beautiful Great South Bay. Cheers

Around 1958 Jack and I played our first gig in Charlotte Harbour’s basement in Washington, DC. I was the singer and played rhythm guitar and Jack played lead. I was 17 and Jack was 14…always ahead of his time. I cannot tell you exactly what songs we played, but for sure there were Buddy Holly songs, Conway Twitty songs, Jimmy Clanton songs; Just a dream, just a dream, All our plans and all our schemes. Who knew at that time what our musical dreams would become. Beyond our wildest dreams, I can tell you that. Sixty-five (count ‘em …65!) years of making music with my best friend.

To say that everything has changed would be an understatement. Throwing your instrument in the back of your ride and piling in with your bandmates is legend for every traveling musician. Since then, collectively we’ve probably played around 15,000 gigs. We’re not done counting yet. That said, it’s time to stop thinking of living as it was… indeed, into the future we must cross.

It has been said that the music Jack and I play was transformative and that we injected an energy into our sound full of constant improvisation taking the compass on a joyride. It is still our plan to continue in our original duo format. We are not retiring from touring, but the Electric lineup of this long-lived incarnation is going fishing for a while.  The road may not go on forever, but the destination is still beyond the horizon.  Friends, this is the year to catch us as ‘Electric Tuna.’ We will be inviting companions old and new to join us and we hope that you will too.

Our big tour is set for September 2023 with a special show on July 20 at the Great South Bay Music Festival Patchogue, NY. Get your tickets for this historic run at selective venues in cities on the east coast. … Jorma
