Grand Point North, the music festival presented by Grace Potter and Higher Ground at Burlington’s Waterfront Park on September 17 and 18, announced the return of Grand Point Weird, a visual arts installation, to the weekend-long party, Grand Point Local, featuring local restaurants and food products, and the Reverb Eco Village, benefiting several local Vermont non-profits.  Organizers also announced that Soule Indomitable and River Whyless will perform the official after party at Nectar’s in downtown Burlington immediately following the festival Saturday night.

In addition to sets by Grace Potter on both festival days, Grand Point North will include Old Crow Medicine Show, Guster, The Wood Brothers, Kaleo, Blind Pilot, The Record Company, Kat Wright & The Indomitable Soul Band, Basia Bulat, and Eliza Hardy Jones, who also plays in Potter’s backing band.

Continuing its tradition of showcasing homegrown talent, this year's lineup will also include acts from around New England including  And The Kids, Steady Betty, Smooth Antics, Blue Button, Billy Dean & The Honor Roll, and Iron Eyes Cody. Evansville Transit Authority was selected by readers of  Seven Days to kick off Grand Point North this year.

Grand Point Weird, the art installation on the festival grounds, will be curated once again by Grace’s sister, Charlotte Potter, who is the glass-studio manager and program director of the Chrysler Museum of Art in Norfolk, VA. This year, Grand Point Weird will feature in intensive collaborative project between Brooklyn based painter, Esteban del Valle, and students from the Vermont Governor's Institute for the Arts. Using the Abenaki creation story of Lake Champlain as inspiration, students developed masks and performances that will augment live painting by Esteban.

“We are thrilled to expand Grand Point Weird (GPW) with a meaningful new partnership with the Governor’s Institute for the Arts (GIA). Both Grace and I attended the GIA and it was extremely formative in the shaping of our careers,’ said Charlotte Potter. “It's exciting to come full circle and work with these talented students, incredible instructors, as well as Esteban who is a dear friend from graduate school. This is a true collaborative project which explores our native lands through myth and storytelling.”

Grand Point North is proud to offer Grand Point Local, a collection of local restaurants and local food products available for sale and curated by The Skinny Pancake. Grand Point Local was created to celebrate local food by highlighting some of Vermont’s best purveyors. This year’s participants include: A Maizing Kettle Corn, Brio Coffeeworks, Caja Madera, Duino Duende, Farmers & Foragers, Green Pasture Meats, Open Hearth Pizza, Pingala, The Skinny Pancake, Southern Smoke, and more.

“It’s our fifth year curating Grand Point North’s awesome food experience and we think this will be the best one yet. Like every year, all proteins and tons of veggies will be sourced locally. New for this year, we have added some of Vermont’s hardest-to-find food trucks,” said Benjy Adler, co-owner of The Skinny Pancake. “Vermont is on the leading edge of the local food movement and there’s no better place to celebrate that at a classic Vermont festival like GPN. Come hungry; this won’t be your average festival food!”

Grand Point North also welcomes the return of the Reverb Eco Village. Founded by environmentalist Lauren Sullivan and her husband Adam Gardner of Guster, Reverb promotes environmental awareness within the music industry by helping musicians make their tours and concerts more eco-friendly while urging concertgoers to take action in the hopes of creating a more sustainable future. The efforts of the Eco Village will once again benefit several local Vermont non-profits.

This year’s official after party is scheduled for Saturday, September 17th at 10:30 P.M. at Nectar’s in downtown Burlington. This 21+ event will feature performances from Soule Indomitable and River Whyless. Tickets go on on-sale today at noon. $10 at www.GrandPointNorth.com.

On the shores of Lake Champlain, Burlington’s Waterfront Park offers an idyllic setting for the family-friendly festival.  The festival offers music on two side-by-side stages with alternating performances, enabling festivals goers to catch every note.  The opening bands are hand-picked by Grace and are always an amazing addition to the headline talent.  The intimate size of the festival guarantees attendees will be able to experience all that it has to offer.

Tickets for Grand Point North and the after party are on sale at  www.GrandPointNorth.com, by phone at 877-987-6487, or in person at the Higher Ground box office, located at 1214 Williston Road in South Burlington.  Two-day festival passes are currently $79. Vermont-based jam quartet Twiddle is proud to announce the return of TUMBLE DOWN on July 28 and 29, 2017.  The two day music festival will be held on the beautiful shores of Lake Champlain at Waterfront Park in Burlington.  Last summer’s picturesque setting hosted national touring acts like Nahko and Medicine for the People, Turkuaz, Cabinet, Kitchen Dwellers and Holly Bowling.  In partnership with Higher Ground Presents and the Lake Champlain Music Festival, Twiddle is thrilled to host another dynamic weekend of music and the outdoors, providing thousands with a special way to soak in everything Burlington has to offer.

“We wanted to do something big in Burlington because we consider it our home.  The city has so much to offer in terms of music, awesome outdoor activities, and the nightlife downtown. We hoped that Tumble Down could reflect the dynamic nature of this amazing small city on Lake Champlain.” - Ryan Dempsey of Twiddle

“We couldn’t be more excited to bring Twiddle and Tumble Down back to Waterfront Park.  For a band that’s been hiding in plain sight for the last 9 years, it’s always thrilling to work with a Vermont band that’s exhibiting explosive growth and relentless creativity. The future is bright for Twiddle.”  - Alex Crothers of Higher Ground Presents

In addition to the many lakeside performances, Tumble Down collaborates with music venues all over Burlington to bring a bevy of late night performances, and even a Twiddle inspired art exhibition led by Phanart.  Notably, the 2016 event culminated with “Mihali and Frends” at Higher Ground in South Burlington, a rare treat which saw Twiddle lead singer and guitarist Mihali Savoulidis performing with a variety of Tumble Down musicians.  The White Light Foundation, a non-profit organization inspired by the band, will again have a positive presence at 2017’s event, supporting local community causes through fundraising and awareness initiatives .

Higher Ground & Troy Savings Bank Music Hall are pleased to host an Acoustic Evening with Trey Anastasio on March 10th. Tickets go on sale this Friday January 27th at Noon.

Over the past three decades, composer/guitarist/vocalist Trey Anastasio has forged a multi-faceted career, winning acclaim in rock, classical and theatrical circles. He is a founding member of Phish, one of today’s most successful and innovative rock bands. Known for uncompromising musicianship and spectacular live performances, Phish released their 15th studio album Big Boat in October 2016 and finished the year with another sold out four-night run at Madison Square Garden. Anastasio also tours regularly with Trey Anastasio Band, which also released a new studio album, Paper Wheels, October 2015.

He has received GRAMMY® nominations for his recordings with Phish and for his solo work. Anastasio has collaborated with such artists as Dave Matthews, Herbie Hancock, Carlos Santana, Toots and the Maytals, B.B. King and The Roots, and – as part of the trio Oysterhead – Les Claypool (Primus) and Stewart Copeland (The Police). He co-wrote the music for the Broadway musical Hands on a Hardbody, which received a Tony nomination for “Best Original Score” in 2013.  In the summer of 2015, Anastasio joined the surviving four members of the Grateful Dead for five stadium shows, which celebrated the band’s 50th anniversary and served as the band’s farewell shows.

Anastasio has performed his original compositions with numerous symphonies. The New York Times hailed his Carnegie Hall performance with the New York Philharmonic as “that rarest of rarities, a classical-rock hybrid that might please partisans from both constituencies.”  In 2014, he debuted a new piece for guitar and orchestra, entitled Petrichor, on a West Coast orchestral tour that concluded with a performance at the Hollywood Bowl, marking his second performance with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Higher Ground is pleased to welcome Phil Lesh & The Terrapin Family Band to Burlington's Waterfront Park as part of Lake Champlain Maritime Festival on July 26. Tickets go on sale this Friday, May 18 at 11am.

Like so many other musical endeavors that Phil Lesh of the Grateful Dead has been a part of, the Terrapin Family Band grew naturally and spontaneously out of something special.

In this case, it was the unique environment that he fostered at Terrapin Crossroads, the music venue that he recently opened in Marin County, CA. Using the Grateful Dead songbook as a springboard for reinterpretation and as inspiration to create original material, the TFB musicians were inspired as much by one another as they were by the diverse group of influences that they brought to the table; as a result, the music conveyed friendship, respect, warmth, and companionship for listeners and performers alike.

'Family' isn't just a moniker for the group, either.

The first person that Phil brought on was Grahame Lesh, his son. From the beginning Grahame's guitar chops, powerful vocals and harmonic touch helped form the backbone of the band's sound. Keeping with the family theme is Alex Koford, a longtime family friend whom Phil recruited to be his drummer.

It quickly became apparent that Alex had a voice to match his drumming ability, and before long he was pulling a 'Levon Helm,' delivering soaring vocal leads while pounding away on the drums.

Then, there is the man of many talents, Jason Crosby. He started playing violin at the age of 2, discovered he had perfect pitch not longer thereafter, and then proceeded to master virtually every instrument known to man. You can usually find him on the piano or violin with the Terrapin Family Band, adding a delicate touch here, a perfect note there.

Last, but certainly not least, is our very own Ross James. The dynamic, bearded guitarist wowed crowds from the moment he burst onto the scene at Terrapin Crossroads, and it wasn't long before his distinct sound and style were as recognizable at Terrapin as Phil's bass bombs.

Combine Ross with the two Lesh men, and you've got about as electric a musical front-court as you can find anywhere. Over time, the band’s music has developed organically, merging and fusing each musician’s influences (including rock, folk, punk, jazz, metal, psychedelic, experimental, classical) into a hard-rockin’ sound rooted in the communal/collective, telepathic, exploratory spirit of the Grateful Dead. What began as a house band for Phil’s Terrapin Crossroads has turned into something much more, and the band is excited to take the unique Terrapin Family Band sound outside of their home turf as they explore new musical grounds.

Vermont-based jazz/jam outfit The Big Sip is pleased to announce its 2nd self-released EP Sip Responsibly. The 6-track album was recorded & produced by the band & collaborator Bjorn Anders Peterson in Middlebury, VT. The EP consists of 5 original songs and a stand-out cover of “Valerie” by The Zutons.

The band is comprised of Matt Diener (guitar & lead vox), Jack Cattabiani (Bass & Vox), Nick Schrope (keys & synth), & Evan Mercer (drums & cymbals). Founded at Middlebury College in 2016, the band has developed a devout following, headlining shows at Nectar’s & supporting national artists at Higher Ground’s Ballroom like Dumpstaphunk, Ripe, JUPTR & more. Known for their improvisational live performances, the group produces a healthy blend of jazz, funk, blues & rock and roll.

Guitarist Matt Diener says, “We spent a total of 24 hours in the little studio at Middlebury tracking this bad boy over the course of 2 days, and I feel that it is the best thing I have made in my life up to this point.”

The Big Sip

Drummer Evan Mercer furthers, "Much of our recording process is influenced by bands like Vulfpeck. They maintain the spirit of improvisation by tracking songs live with everyone playing. We embrace the ebb and flow of music. That's what makes it unique."

With no rest for the weary, the band is back in the studio, tracking new tunes & preparing for a full length release due out Winter 2018.

Higher Ground Presents is pleased to announce Twiddle's fourth annual Tumble Down Festival at Waterfront Park in Burlington, VT Friday and Saturday July 26-27, 2019. Full lineup, along with additional details, will be announced soon. Early Bird Passes & VIP Packages go on sale this Friday, Dec. 7th at 11am ET. Single day passes will be available at a later date.

With roots at Vermont’s Castleton State University, Twiddle began their extensive touring career in 2005. Over a decade later, the foursome has composed an eclectic catalog spanning four studio albums of originals, in addition to many live releases. Having shined at prominent festivals around the country, packed historic theaters from coast to coast, and collaborated on stage with legends from The Grateful Dead and Phish, Twiddle’s trajectory shows zero sign of slowing. Tumble Down has become a highly anticipated summer tradition, allowing the band to not only play to a large hometown crowd but to also welcome some of their friends and favorite artists to the stage alongside them.

Wilco is putting the call out. They're seeking adventurous and talented fans to sing with the band on stage at this year's Solid Sound Festival (June 28-30 at MASS MoCA in North Adams, MA). 5-10 lucky fans will win the opportunity to have the live band karaoke experience of their dreams.

"Ever wish karaoke bars had more Wilco? Do they have any? I don’t really know. But I do know that they don’t have enough songs about existential dread and self-loathing. Sound fun? Please join us onstage so we can get Solid Sound 2019 started with some outsourced belters from the Wilco songbook. Let’s do this!" - Jeff Tweedy

To enter, fans must share a video of them performing the song they'd like to sing at Solid Sound on Instagram or YouTube with the hashtag #WilcoKaraoke. Winners will be contacted on June10th, and will win two 3-day passes to Solid Sound, a one-song performance onstage with Wilco as their backing band, a meet-and-greet and rehearsal with the band, and an official Solid Sound artist gift bag. This will take place on the Friday night of the festival. Friday single-day tickets are now sold out, but limited Sunday tickets still remain. They can be purchased at solidsoundfestival.com

Higher Ground is pleased to announce that they are in the process of building a large stage with video support in the Champlain Valley Expo’s Midway Lawn to provide a space for concerts and community events in the age of physical distancing.

Up to 250 vehicles will be able to park six feet apart from each other, with room to set up lawn chairs or a blanket in front of each vehicle.

Video will be broadcast on a state-of-the-art LED video wall, 27’ wide x 15’ tall, mounted on a massive forty foot high structure next to the stage to accommodate sight lines. The LED video wall provides crystal clear resolution in all weather and sound is broadcasted over FM radio.

The HG Drive-In Experience officially opens on June 13th weekend with three area High School graduation ceremonies. Higher Ground will announce other events and programming in the coming days.

“The goal,” says Alex Crothers, founder of Higher Ground, “is to provide a community resource to help facilitate public gatherings of all types. We’ve purposefully left the schedule open so that we can accommodate a broad range of uses. We’re in uncharted territory but we imagine religious worship, charity bingo nights, live streaming of concert events, chamber orchestras, live plays, weddings, political rallies, etc.” Crothers added, “While we practice physical distancing, it’s critical we find avenues to share social and cultural experiences.”

This project would be impossible without the support of Champlain Valley Exposition and generous contributions from: Vermont Community Foundation, Burton, Ben & Jerrys, AARP, Cynosure, Northfield Savings Bank, VSECU, Lake Champlain Ferries, Ferry Dock Marina, Solidarity of Unbridled Labour, Pomerleau Real Estate, and Atomic Pro Audio.

“We are in the midst of a watershed moment for Vermont communities, and we are excited that this collaboration will provide much-needed support to the arts community throughout our state,” said Vermont Community Foundation President & CEO Dan Smith. “Theaters, concert halls, and museums are exactly the type of places where people come to heal after hard times, which is why it’s important to preserve the arts now and in the future.”

Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi announce Fireside LIVE - a special series of socially distanced, limited-capacity performances this summer.  They will be joined by varying members of Tedeschi Trucks Band each night with the total band configuration ranging between four and seven musicians depending on the show.  The modified lineup will perform under the name ‘Tedeschi Trucks’ for the first time as a nod to their band members who are unable to join the tour because of the challenging conditions with the current pandemic.

Fireside LIVE was inspired by their very successful at-home online performance series from earlier this year, the Fireside Sessions.  The shows will be the first fully live public performances for the ensemble since February 2020, and come on the heels of the recent postponement of their annual summer Wheels of Soul Tour to next year (2022).  Venues will include a mix of small or reduced-capacity outdoor amphitheaters, drive-ins and pod set-ups, all of which are covid-19 compliant and taking precautions to ensure the safety of fans, staff, band and crew.

Fireside LIVE will kick off in Jacksonville, FL with a two-night run on June 11/12 then hit cities across the south and northeast through the months of June and July.  Tickets for all shows, except Red Rocks, will go on sale to the general public Friday, April 23 at 10am ET.

“We're really looking forward to getting on the road and seeing everybody's beautiful faces," said Susan.  "Getting together earlier this year to record the Fireside Sessions was really re-energizing, and we are excited to play live in front of fans again. As much as we love performing as the full Tedeschi Trucks Band, current conditions just don’t allow for us to do that.”

The decision as to which members will join for each show will be decided week to week, depending on local conditions at the time.

Fireside LIVE brings to the stage the same intimate window into the band's creative chemistry that was on display during the Fireside Sessions, which streamed back in Feb-March on nugs.net.  Packed with deep cuts, reimagined songs, and several premieres of rare covers and new original songs that the band has been working on during the break, the six-episode streaming series was enthusiastically received for delivering something new and unique each week.

For fans who missed the original broadcasts or want to watch it again, TTB and nugs.net will offer a rebroadcast of all six Fireside Sessions.  Fans who originally purchased the 6-episode bundle will be able to view the shows for free. Details on the broadcasting schedule for the encore presentation of the Fireside Sessions will be announced shortly.

Higher Ground, in collaboration with Burlington City Arts, is proud to present an outdoor concert series called Backside at 405. Located behind BCA Studios at 405 Pine Street, in Burlington’s vibrant South End Arts District, Backside at 405 will feature live music every Friday and Saturday night all summer long.

The series is aimed at bringing people together safely to enjoy live entertainment while also providing an opportunity for local and regional musicians to perform for the first time in over a year. Expect approximately 26 shows ranging from indie, world, hip-hop, and everything in between. The series kicks off THIS FRIDAY, May 28th and runs through the end of August.
