It’s been five years since beloved California-based rock band The Mother Hips released new music - and they certainly didn’t disappoint with latest single, “It’s Alright.”

The video for the song, released in late March, showcases the band’s notoriously close relationship with fans (who were encouraged to send clips of themselves for inclusion in the video) and offers a generous helping of adventure - something the band is known for.

“I adore this video and the way fans have been responding to it,” said Greg Loiacono, co-founder of The Mother Hips. “Having played a few shows since its release, I have had folks come up to me and tell me how much fun they had making their clips...and how excited they are to see themselves and their friends and family in the video”.

The Mother Hips recently wrapped up a west coast tour run - their first organized tour since co-founder Tim Bluhm’s speed flying accident in 2016. Since their last release (Chronicle Man in 2014), the band has weathered a series of personal changes, as well as dabbled in a number of outside and solo projects. Nonetheless, the band has maintained their ties with fans: after Bluhm’s accident, fans and friends organized a fundraiser on his behalf.

We’re constantly sifting through the most recently released music in search of a standout - and just 30 seconds into alternative rock band Elliot Root’s latest video release “Wicked Lies,” we’ve found just that.

The song’s theme - a timely message of society’s current social state - set the stage for an elaborate video fueled by a fascinating desperation viewers will certainly identify with. The result is a visual we can’t help but watch over and over again.

“With the video for Wicked Lies, we wanted a slightly less obvious route with the storyline,” said Scott Krueger, lead singer. “Most people resonate with the song having a relationship in mind, but there is another side to the song that feels relevant in our current social climate. So, when we were working through ideas with Director Matthew Delisi, the concept of embracing the theme of paranoia felt like a fun twist that we ran with.”

Co-written by Krueger and fellow Elliot Root member Melissa Mattey (keyboards, drum programming), the video features Krueger as the lead actor, going through the soul crushing, panicked motions of dealing with a lost love in a retro, atomic-themed setting.

“Wicked Lies” is the band’s second single release from debut album Conjure - the album itself, offering fans a progressive story throughout, released in August 2017. Prior to releasing Conjure, Elliot Root found success in streaming with singles “Punks and Poets” and “June, After Dark,” which have accumulated 3.2 and 2.5 million streams respectively.

Elliot Root also features members Sean Truskowski (drums) and Todd Bond (guitars).

In a vast ocean of artists trying to find their sound, duo Towne’s new album Audacious - out tomorrow - is just that: a bold fusion of alternative pop with folk country undertones and a convicted vocal from Steevie Steeves that confidently proves they’ve found what some never will.

Equally as enticing is the lyric to each song, crafted in a way that presents a refreshing take on subject matter anyone can identify with. A glowing example is latest single, “Camouflage.”

“‘Camouflage’ was one of those songs that kind of fell out of the sky for us in the writing room,” said Steeves. “It started off with me sort of venting about how hard it can be to get noticed as an artist these days, especially as a female. At some point Jon (Decious, duo co-founder) had the idea to use the word ‘camouflage.’ That’s when the overall thought shifted, and I started writing about feeling invisible in an old relationship I was in. Turns out, we all had similar stories.  Bonnie Baker (our co-writer) had this beautiful piano lick that fit the song perfectly. We knew we had something special.”

Other tracks on the album include lead single from the EP “Let Me Let You Go,” as well as “Avalanche” and upcoming focus track “Vegas.” Co-produced by Bonnie Baker and Ryan Peterson, the duo calls the making of the EP “a bit of a rollercoaster” but “open and honest - what we were shooting for from the start.”

Steevie Steeves

Though both Steeves and Decious had a successful run at music independent of the other, their partnership began rather serendipitously when both got scholarships to Skip Ewing’s Horse and Writer songwriting camp in Wyoming.

“I’d written with a few guys back in Nashville that had encouraged me to apply for Skip’s writing seminar... I met Jon, and I liked him right off the bat,” said Steeves.

The crossed paths quickly progressed into a partnership driven by a powerful musical connection.

“We quickly realized we lived across the street from each other in Nashville. We began writing and performing together, and here we are,” said Decious.

It’s been a year of quality releases from veteran Austin-based artist and area favorite Bob Schneider: the April release of single “Making It Up” (which pop artist and longtime Schneider fan Jason Mraz also released on his latest album, Know.) prefaced June’s Blood & Bones - a thirteen-song collection of stories mapped out by some of Schneider’s latest life improvements, including his marriage and the birth of his daughter.

Schneider’s trademark trend toward ‘bittersweet’ continues with Schneider’s releasing of single “Katie” - available with Grateful Web today.

"I think what I was trying to convey in this song, is this moment that happened to me years ago when I was with my ex-wife, and we had just gone to a movie together and it was late at night, and we were in the parking lot, and we just stood holding each other for a moment and I felt truly happy in that moment, and at the same time I knew that the moment would pass,” says Schneider of the experience that inspired the song. “That it would fade away, and I felt sad at the same time that I was feeling so happy. Grieving the loss of the moment that I was in at the same time that I felt so terribly happy."

Born in Michigan but raised in Germany, Schneider studied piano and guitar, often performing alongside his father, who was an aspiring opera singer. He studied at the University of Texas-El Paso before moving to Austin to establish himself as a musician.

Schneider has held a monthly residency at Austin’s Saxon Pub for the last 19 years, sharing the stage with some of the city’s top musicians. His loyal fan base and ever-growing career have led to Schneider’s achievement as the most decorated Austin Music Award-winning artist to date.
