Gramatik, part of the Pretty Lights Music crew, is hitting the road again, just a short couple of weeks after his summer tour ended. He is embarking across the US in support of Bassnectar, hitting major cities including Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Detroit, New York, and many more.
Fresh off a successful festival season, Gramatik closed out the summer with a headlining set at New York City's Webster Hall and has embarked on a fall tour with Bassnectar.
Be sure to catch this innovative bass artist as he brings his unique take on electronic music to a city near you.
In addition to touring, Gramatik recently released his new EP #digitalfreedom. Since Gramatik has signed with PLM, his career has been based on the platform of free file sharing. Gramatik is dedicating this EP to the fight against the severe internet censorship bills we've been hearing about so much in recent months. With this EP, Gramatik hopes to spread awareness about the government acts that seek to regulate the internet
This EP also represents an evolution of Gramatik's sound, as it strays from his usual chilled out hip-hop driven beats, and enters a more bass heavy realm. Good music does not just stick to one genre, and neither does Gramatik. With this EP, Gramatik wants you to open your ears to the new vibes, and embrace the versatility in his production.

Says Tommie Sunshine, founder and CEO of Brooklyn Fire, “Creating this was an easy decision as my family almost lost our summer home in Manasaquan, NJ. It was my Grandmother's house & I spent every summer of my life visiting the Jersey Shore there. To see such devastation moved me to action. I wanted to go down there to help but that proved impossible, so I did what I could from here in Brooklyn & called Parag to join forces in creating what has become something very special. One of the best aspects of this is that Live Nation has let us make this event ALL AGES so with the kids involved, I feel like this is going to be one rowdy Monday night in NYC.”
Says Parag Bhandari, founder & CEO of UG Strategies, “I was raised in New Jersey and I live in Brooklyn, and seeing the devastation that Hurricane Sandy brought to the area is absolutely tragic. I’m honored to be working with Tommie and so many great artists and partners to collectively do our part and help those in need with a great night of music.”
EDM For Sandy Relief is an ALL AGES event. Tickets are $20, with waived ticketing fees, and are available online via Ticketmaster

Chart-topping DJ and producer Gramatik (formerly of the Pretty Lights Music label) is adding another project to his plate, a new label simply called Lowtemp. Launching today, the imprint will focus primarily on the artist's own music as well as his friend's releases, and in the future may recruit new artists. Gramatik states "The label name Lowtemp is an abbreviation for low temperature, which implies that the label is putting out ''cool'' music. :)"
After a long and fruitful time with Pretty Lights, Gramatik states that "I'm launching my own label because that is something I always wanted to do and I think it's something that every artist eventually wants, to be fully independent and have complete creative and executive control of their own artistry. It's a natural step forward. Pretty Lights Music is family for life, but the time has come for me to do my own thing." Gramatik thanks Derek Vincent Smith (aka Pretty Lights) for helping him reach his goal faster.
In celebration of the Lowtemp launch, Gramatik is gracing our ears with a brand-new single "Bluestep", a signature Gramatik genre clash. The cut combines the vibes of raw 50's and 60's Blues with all kinds of EDM genres - the result is what he refers to as "Bluestep". It's a dynamic mixture of Blues and Dubstep, a plethora of screaming guitar, howling vocals and big bass, capturing the raw energies of both music worlds in a cohesive, yet outrageous picture.
"Bluestep" is the first take off Gramatik's upcoming full-length album,The Age of Reason, due out this spring on Lowtemp. Gramatik elaborates on the epic title, which was "inspired by a stand-up segment by comedian George Carlin. He made a joke on the fact that he was Catholic until he reached the age of reason. I also firmly believe that there comes a time in a human life when you reach the so-called 'age of reason' and realize that there are so many irrational beliefs, shameless contradictions and illogical restrictions inflicted upon society. Some people reach it sooner, others later, but a majority unfortunately never do. [Through my music] I'd like to guide more people to reach the age of reason sooner. Maybe. Or, hopefully at least unite the ones that feel the same way."
Gramatik also drops his new video for "Bluestep" which features highlights from his recent tour with the worldwide King of Wobble, Bassnectar. The clip includes footage from Gramatik's performances in the US, Canada, Russia, Belgium & Austria. The debut of his mesmerizing Tesla Coil stage installation is also documented in the video.
The Coil was unveiled at Gramatik's sold-out headlining show at the The Fillmore in Colorado this past November. This stage/light design was inspired by inventor Nikola Tesla, who Gramatik holds in high regard. The Tesla Coil, one of his most famous inventions, had always fascinated Gramatik so he wanted his stage design to be inspired by it, portraying its electrifying magnificence in an abstract, theatrical fashion. The Coil adds a whole new dimension and will captivate the imagination and ignite the audience energy at Gramatik performances to come.
Age of reason or reason enough, the revolution begins now.

The DYWC video has racked up over 57 million views to date.
Locust just announced their full-length release on European electronic label Editions Mego this April 16th, entitled You'll Be Safe Forever. The two Locust band mates Mark Van Hoen and Louis Sherman have accomplished the melding of 50 years of electronic musical history in a beautifully crafted album, with sounds evoking memories of early electronic icons like Delia Derbyshire, through to Tangerine Dream, Eno, Throbbing Gristle, LFO and beyond. The record combines '80s industrial techno, the spoken word of underground disco, cosmic synth lines, and ambient distorted dream vocals combined with rhythmic looping drums."Strobes" is the first digital single off the new album that blurs the line between the avant-garde, dance and ambient noise with an optimistic, rollicking drum beat, groovy vocal samples, and eerie synth elements. Another standout song "Just Want You" features darkly twinkling synthesizers, and ominous, thumping percussion that guides the track along into sinister, uncharted territory. The gently pulsing electronics of "Fall For Me" combined with airy vocal samples and an almost head-banging percussion, sprinkled with soft, soothing piano melodies. "Oh Yeah" is laced with a child's whisper and huddling, frenetic percussion that feels more like a heartbeat than dance material. Sherman decribes the album as "an experience rather than a collection of songs. We made sure the whole album flowed like an evening with ebbs and flows that create a journey towards the ultimate cosmic zone at the end."The record showcases prime examples of Van Hoen's compulsively hypnotic beats and abstracted pop vocals—already hallmarks of his collected work since 1993 both in his own music and with collaborators Seefeel, Slowdive & Scala to weave a unique sonic tapestry, as inviting as it is intricate. Paired with Sherman's evocative synthesizer improvisations—an immediately visceral element new to Locust—this new partnership has crafted a shattered landscape that bridges two perspectives of progressive movement in electronic music under a single name. "Working with Mark was magic from the first note." says Sherman. "We had written most of the record in just one session improvising." The album was primarily written in Louis Sherman's studio in Bushwick, Brooklyn and completed in Van Hoen's studio in Woodstock, New York. Sherman, an American from Baltimore, comes to the band armed with a vast knowledge of the history of electronic music. This, combined with Londoner Mark Van Hoen’s known musical pedigree, and production expertise maps the complete topography of a landscape...The overall effect of You'll Be Safe Forever seems to promise the contrary -- not unlike a haunting dream that wakes you up to a different reality, shrouded in an almost spectral haze. The tracks are instrumental but there are voices everywhere, cut up and tweaked or stretched out, leaving echoes of silence. The overall result, Van Hoen says of the album, is that "the music is more emotional than academic". Locust's new release You'll Be Safe Forever makes you question what you're hearing and feeling all at once. The result is something unquestioningly, mind-bendingly beautiful.Locust will be playing at the Editions Mego special event at the De La Warr Pavilion in the UK this May 11, alongside Luc Ferrari, Kevin Drumm, Mark Fell, Fennesz and more (full details here).
In an effort to save the universe from eminent doom, five Brooklyn-based producers were summoned by seven mysterious babes from outer space. Sent by powers unknown to save the galaxy from annihilation, the babes projected visions in the minds of the producers. They must now join forces to interpret these visions through sound as EXTRAORDINARY MAGNITUDE.
About the Remix:
It's one of the instrumental songs on the upcoming album "Proportions" mashed up with "No Diggity" acapella. "We thought No Diggity worked really good together so we decided to drop it as a remix. The instrumental version is a completely original song and will be featured on the album," Gramatik says of the project.
"They Can't Tell Me Nothing" is the first single from Boulder based - genre defying Paper Diamond's forthcoming EP 'Paragon' set to be released April 16th 2013. Paragon will feature a range of production, instrumentation, and collaborators all weaved into Paper Diamond's signature style. During the past two months, while on tour with Excision, Paper Diamond has been dropping the new single which has caused crowds to get all railed up into a frenzy. According to Paper Diamond, "It's one of the rowdiest parts of the show." The single features original verses from Texas rapper J Fresh, and for the next two months, you can expect several more leaks, songs, and releases from Paper Diamond leading up to the release next month!
"They Can't Tell Me Nothing" exlusively premiered on This Song is Sick, who boasts,"This has all the signs of being a festival anthem. The song starts with a peculiar stabbing synth that sets the mood of the track. It builds more energy and drop in some chopped up rapping adding the perfect touch. The drop hits and doesn’t let up, then bringing in the eerie synths once more."
In less than 10 hours, "They Can't Tell Me Nothing" had already received over 15,000 downloads. Other blog favorties are picking up on it quick, Electrojams comments,"Neverone to rely too heavily on a single style of EDM, the Colorado-based DJ has started to put out some serious trap tracks and this is his best one yet. The song is packed with hard beats and a solid rhythm that lends itself easily to dancing, especially when the drop comes and the song gets downright rowdy. With all of the trap songs coming out lately, Paper Diamond manages to stay fresh by seamlessly blending the genre with his heavier dubstep style that we’ve all come to know and love." EDM Sauce claims, “They Can’t Tell Me Nothing” is a splendid bass music track that has been mastered to perfection."
With his stacked schedule, heading out on a 3 month tour with Excision was not an easy decision to make at first, but Paper Diamond makes it a priority to refuse to let anyone pigeonhole his sound. While “genre-defying” is an overused word, Paper Diamond is one of the few producers who truly pulls it off, seamlessly weaving together genres as diverse as electro, trap, funk, dubstep, house, moombahton and hip-hop, all with a whiff of ganja smoke floating through it.
Paper Diamond continues his nationwide tour with Excision.
This month, Paper Diamond partnered up with This Song is Sick who premiered "They Can't Tell Me Nothing". This was followed by another exclusive premiere with Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival with the new single with Christian Rich, titled" XIX" featuring vocals by Angela McCluskey (Billboard's single pick of the week). Both tracks will appear on Paper Diamond's forthcoming EP "Paragon". Today Paper Diamond announced that "Paragon" release date is being pushed back to Tuesday, April 23 instead of today as the original release date. Rather than leave his fans empty-handed, though, Paper Diamond is offering up an unreleased instrumental b-side track "Sleight of Hand" for free download. His old-school fans will be sure to vibe with this cut since it fuses Paper Diamond's signature bouncy electronic beats with hip-hop vibes for an epically fresh, anthemic banger..Paragon will feature a range of production, instrumentation, and collaborators all weaved into Paper Diamond's signature style. While “genre-defying” is an overused word, Paper Diamond is one of those rare artists who truly pulls it off, seamlessly weaving together genres as diverse as electro, funk, dubstep, house, moombahton and hip-hop. During the past two months, while on tour with Excision, Paper Diamond has been dropping some of the new songs on stage, including another single "They Can't Tell Me Nothing" which has caused crowds to get all railed up into a frenzy. According to Paper Diamond, "It's one of the rowdiest parts of the show." The single features original verses from Texas rapper J Fresh. A few weeks back, Paper Diamond exclusively partnered with This Song Is Sick who offered up this first tasty sampler and boasted, "This has all the signs of being a festival anthem. The song starts with a peculiar stabbing synth that sets the mood of the track. It builds more energy and drop in some chopped up rapping adding the perfect touch. The drop hits and doesn’t let up, then bringing in the eerie synths once more."With the warmer season upon us, Paper Diamond also announces new festival dates as continues his nationwide tour with Excision. As he simply put, “Paper Diamond draws from an origami concept in that If you have a piece of paper, whatever your diamond shape is (simple or complex), that’s YOUR art. For me musically speaking, whether it’s simple or has a lot of layers, it’s my self-expression. Paper Diamond is art".Skill and versatility has landed Paper Diamond on stage with some of the biggest names in the game, as he has been personally selected as an opener by the iconic Bassnectar, newly-minted superstar Skrillex, EDM mainstay Pretty Lights, and now dubstep heavyweight Excision. The hip-hop community has also welcomed Paper Diamond with open arms – recent collaborator, Big Boi gave him a shout-out in Vibe Magazine, and his track “The 40 Thieves” had an exclusive premiere on Jay-Z’s Life + Times. In an interview with Life + Times, Paper Diamond said "I've been taught that music is a conversation. I personally use music to express my voice".

Legend DJ Muggs continues to keep it rap game - his volatile new video "Wikid" (featuring Chuck D) premiered yesterday on Rolling Stone. Of the video DJ Muggs says, "We harnessed the energy of Public Enemy and Cypress Hill with futuristic sounds and the aggression and vocal delivery with one of the greatest MCs ever, Mr. Chuck D."
The legendary Cypress Hill producer DJ Muggs is on fire -this past January he released his critically acclaimed beat-savvy album on Ultra Music. Along with Chuck D, Muggs' latest features hip-hop heavyweights Freddie Gibbs, Danny Brown and U.K. MC Dizzee Rascal. He just wrapped up a national tour with Modestep, and MiM0SA joined up on the west coast dates to achieve massive sonic destruction. The Bass For Your Face Tour served up enough bass-heavy soundscapes and dirt-nasty drops to satiate every single EDM fix across the nation. But the smoke hasn't settled just yet...be on the lookout for even more new music from this multi-talented artist who is killing the game in 2013.
"DJ Muggs’ crucial role as the aural orchestrator behind one of rap’s most successful collectives, Cypress Hill, is a feat that’s unmatched by few. His production approach—full of ominous sample licks and attacking drums—gave birth to a lineage of grimy, analog soundscapes. Muggs continues to reinvent his musical wheels, producing an electronic music-driven project...a unique culmination of multiple genres reinterpreted through Muggs’ hip-hop vision."- XXL
Electro hip-hop producer SuperVision has been working hard to step up his production game with his latest EP release, Telekinetic out June 4th via Pretty Lights Music (PLM).With a background on turntables spanning over 16 years, the Dallas, Texas native paired his love of collecting music with harder hitting drums, advanced effects, fills, builds, drops, heavier sub bass, and texturized synth bass. The end result is an EP of superior production quality and musical vision. On Telekinetic, SuperVision picked premiere samples he uncovered while crate-digging all over the country during tour. "Ancient Souls" introduces sampling that could only be used with his newfound production techniques. "Until The Last Hours" has multiple samples from 70's country vinyl dug up at Bill's Records in Dallas, but the production remains completely electro hip hop. This record has heavy sub bass throughout, but "Play It Funky" is the truly the hardest hitting and will likely be an audience favorite.Download Telekinetic HERE on the Pretty Lights Music website.
Gramatik announces part two of the infamous Age Of Reason Tour and unleashes the second single off his forthcoming album, The Age Of Reason. The brand-new single titled, "You Don't Understand" features guitarist Don Daro of Exmag; who will also be joining Gramatik on tour this fall.
In hype of the upcoming album, Gramatik explains how he differs from the vast majority of electronic musicians as he records using live instruments while striving to make dance music that tells a story. During a recent interview with Relix Magazine, he states,
"There's a lot of guitar, bass, piano, all types of organs, lots of original vocals - more than any other record I've ever produced. [The Age of Reason] combines all the genres I've been producing since the beginning in the most drastic, neurotic, cohesive and outrageous way imaginable."
The second single sticks to Gramatik's signature jazzy style featuring a down-low melodic touch with a smooth transition into an ever-so dramatic dub-heavy drop. If you're diggin' the track, stay tuned, the single will be available as a free download. And for those heading to Camp Bisco this weekend, be sure to catch him this Satuday, July 13.
Moogfest is a celebration that honors the creativity and inventiveness of Moog Music founder Dr. Robert Moog, and pays tribute to the legacy of the analog synthesizer. For over 50 years, Bob Moog and his company Moog Music have pioneered technology that has advanced popular music and culture, and ushered in a new era of artistic expression through sound and experimentation. Now featuring an experimental lineup of daytime conference programming, curated by a soon-to-be-announced lineup of cultural, artistic and technological luminaries, and punctuated by nightly landmark music performances, Moogfest is a five-day event dedicated to the convergence of technology, art and music.Since its inception in 2004, Moogfest has been a magnet for artists, engineers, and enthusiasts of Bob Moog and his legacy to meet, share, create and collaborate. When Moog brought the festival home to Asheville in 2008 it adopted a three-day multi-stage format to include contemporary bands and producers that exemplify the innovative spirit of Moog and electronic music. Break Science is beyond excited about the release of their new album, Seven Bridges on the Pretty Lights Music (PLM) record label; now available as a free download on the Pretty Lights Music website. To celebrate their album release, Break Science hits the road this week to play Official Pretty Lights Analog Future Tour After Parties. This is the first full-length album for the duo, and it perfectly showcases the range of their creative vision and stylistic evolution. Seven Bridges will shake venues and clubs to their core, not only with ultra deep subsonic basslines, but with emotionally powerful lyrics, and a soulful message of evolution, integration, and positivity in the face of hardship. The name of the album is very much aligned with its intention, to "bridge gaps" between the past & present, the present & future, and between influence and imagination.Raised and influenced by the rhythm and culture of New York City, Adam Deitch and Borahm Lee fuse generations of the city's rich musical legacy with their own deep-rooted connection to hip-hop heritage. Merging their production styles seamlessly, the duo creates a refreshingly original take on hip-hop, better described as electro hip-hop bass music. The live show transcends audiences’ expectations with Borahm’s seasoned trip-hop/dub/soul vibes on keys, as well as his advanced live production techniques, and Adam's thunderous & flavorful breakbeat style on the drums.Break Science has been electrifying the festival circuit this year with packed dates across the country, including huge plays at Electric Zoo, Electric Forest, Spring Awakening, Detroit Movement, BUKU, Summer Camp, Bounce, Camp Bisco, Hornings Hideout, Summer Meltdown and KahBang festivals, as well as raising $8,000 for flood victims in Colorado by throwing a show at the last minute when their show at the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheater with Lotus was cancelled due to flooding. See below for upcoming fall tour dates as Break Science travels across the States playing mind moving, body bending after parties while on tour with label mate/founder Pretty Lights.

On the cusp of their headlining performance at Austin's X Games alongside Metallica and Nicki Minaj, The Glitch Mob release their new single "Better Hide, Better Run (ft. Mark Johns)," from their forthcoming 3-track EP 'Piece of the Indestructible,' out June 9 on The Glitch Mob's Glass Air imprint.
Inspired by the notion that music can make you feel indestructible and allow for transcending limitations (for example, read the story of Grant Korgan), ‘Piece of the Indestructible’ is a mix of the stadium-ready style of their recent releases and the more spacey, introspective vibe of their first album Drink The Sea.
“This EP emerged from a period of soul searching about our own music and music itself,” say The Glitch Mob. “We realized that music arms people against the dangers, trials, and ups and downs of life. It’s like a force field. It’s badass, but not merely for the sake of just being tough. There’s a purpose there.”
Featuring sultry vocals from Moving Castle collective member Mark Johns, lead single “Better Hide, Better Run” takes the classic Glitch Mob sound into the future with its powerful tribal rock-infused electro style. The EP is rounded out by two forthcoming tracks, the intensely cinematic opener "Head Full of Shadows" and the more ethereal closer "The Clouds Breathe For You."

Leaders from Durham’s civic organizations, cultural institutions, government and business announced earlier today that Moogfest – the internationally acclaimed festival of music, art and technology -- will debut in Durham May 2016. This announcement signals a long-term commitment by festival organizers, reinforcing the exploding technology scene and culture of innovation in the Triangle. The three-day event will run from May 19-22, 2016. A limited number of Early Bird tickets are now available at Moogfest.com for $99.00.
“Moogfest is a platform for conversation and experimentation with innovative programming that perfectly mirrors Durham’s momentum as a capital of technology, culture and entertainment,” says Emmy Parker, Brand Director at Moog Music.
Moogfest has been a festival of electronic music since 2004, known for presenting performances by early pioneers in electronic music, alongside pop and avant garde experimentalists of today. Previous Moogfest performers include Kraftwerk, Brian Eno, Chic, Massive Attack, Holly Herndon, Flying Lotus, Terry Riley, M83, The Flaming Lips, Suicide, Pet Shop Boys, Grimes, TV On The Radio, MIA, St. Vincent, Tangerine Dream, Keith Emerson, Moderat and Squarepusher.
In celebration of today’s announcement, Moogfest releases “Translational Drifts: Moogfest Vol. 1,” the first EP in a series of free digital recordings that feature Moogfest artists - past, present and future. Volume 1 showcases five contemporary acts reinterpreting seminal electronic music influencers that have shaped past Moogfest lineups. This premiere installment includes YACHT, ADULT., Julianna Barwick, Moses Sumney and Dan Deacon translating tracks by Devo, Pet Shop Boys, Suicide, Laurie Anderson and Brian Eno. Their renditions pay tribute to a rich history of electronic music, with new sounds that continue to push further into the future.
YACHT, a contributor and previous Moogfest curator, praises the company behind the collaboration, “We love how Moog brings artists together. The sound of the machines and the culture of the company are like a bridge across genres and generations.”
Over the last several years, the festival has evolved to include a mind-expanding conference for creative and technology professionals. In 2014, Moogfest worked with designers and technologists at Google, researchers from the MIT Media Lab, editors from Make Magazine and organizers from the Eyeo Festival (among others) to present panels, workshops and demos at the forefront of art and technology. Presentations by music pioneers Giorgio Moroder, Nile Rodgers, Janelle Monae, and Keith Emerson were accompanied by conversations with inventors and electronic instrument designers Roger Linn and Tom Oberheim, plus Futurama creator David X Cohen. Moogfest also commissioned “Moogfest: Conductar”, a virtual reality app, nominated for two Webby Awards. Moogfest is already developing new programming and plans to bring similar exciting partnerships to Durham in 2016.
The festival’s priority remains a focus on intimate venues for performance and conversation, encouraging the same ambience established in Asheville. Moogfest will activate many of Durham’s downtown event venues and public spaces with a mix of ticketed and free community programming.
Moogfest is a tribute to Dr. Robert Moog and the profound influence his inventions have had on how we hear the world. Over the last sixty years, Bob Moog and Moog Music have pioneered the analog synthesizer and other technology tools for artists. This exchange between engineer and musician is celebrated with a unique festival format, where the creative process is understood as a collaboration among many people, across time and space, in commerce and culture.
Grimes and Miike Snow will join more than 250 of the world’s most forward-thinking musicians, artists, and technologists -- from GZA, Gary Numan, and Blood Orange to virtual-reality pioneer Jaron Lanier, transhumanist visionary Dr. Martine Rothblatt, and cyborg activist Neil Harbisson – for Moogfest 2016.
Initial roster of artists and innovators that will be collaborating with Moogfest on art installations, exhibits, discussions, and workshops includes Research Triangle Park, MIT Media Lab, Google, IDEO, EYEO, Gray Area Art & Technology Center, NEW INC at The New Museum, Duke University, IBM’s DJ Watson, Burt’s Bees, and Kickstarter.
Hailed by The New York Times for “its mom-and-pop technosophy and its insistence on immersive experiences in small, comfortable spaces,” Moogfest stands out from other festivals thanks to a distinctive format where many headlining artists not only perform in the evening, but also join conversations and lead participatory workshops during the day. By putting a premium on experimentation, collaboration, multi-night residencies, and newly commissioned work, Moogfest is an incubator for world-premiere and one-time-only performances and art installations that festival-goers will not experience anywhere else.
Evening headline performances by synth-pop auteur, Grimes; avant pop trio, Miike Snow; and sets by Black Madonna, invigorating a Moogfest dance floor with her singular blend of Chicago house, techno and disco; Skepta, UK’s king of grime, bringing his much-lauded A/V show; Health and their onslaught of epic noise rock; the electro-pop savvy dance tunes of Bob Moses; Patricia with a live performance of techno produced on eurorack modular synths; Eyes Low for that home-grown, hard, and dirty brand of North Carolina dance music; and artists Morton Subotnik and Sarah Davachi join Alessandro Cortini and Suzanne Ciani in a special concert to celebrate the pioneering work of Don Buchla.
Daytime performances will include Erika Anderson, the performer known as EMA, headlining one of the Durationals (a daily series of extended performances co-presented by experimental video label Undervolt & C), while Grammy Award-nominee tAz Arnold will lead a guided music meditation at Duke University’s Nasher Museum of Art.

Launched in 2013 by Pittsburgh-based nonprofit Thrill Mill, Inc., Pittsburgh’s Thrival Innovation + Music Festival is an annual weeklong event that showcases the former industrial juggernaut’s resurgence as a dynamic tech and creative hub.
Running September 20-24, the festival features multiple days of immersive, innovation-focused programming, capped by a diverse two-day outdoor live music experience with world renowned talent. Thrival musical headliners include CHVRCHES, Thievery Corporation, Metric, and Lettuce with additional acts to be announced. Former headliners include Panic! At the Disco, RJD2, Raekwon and Ghostface Killah, Wale, Moby, Portugal. The Man, and more.
Thrival Innovation programs will explore three themes: AuthentiCity, The Ripple Effect, and Lost and Found.
AuthentiCIty speaks to the complexities of Pittsburgh’s rising status as one of the most livable cities in the U.S., as well as America’s top food town and other accolades.
Thrival executive producer, Dan Law, explains, “Recently, Pittsburgh finds itself on a number of ‘top’ lists, but so much of our city remains undiscovered to a broader audience. The festival offers that unique opportunity to witness why Pittsburgh is a modern comeback story.”
The city’s tech boom has been a driving force in its comeback narrative attracting industry stalwarts like Google, Apple, Facebook, and Uber. However, Thrival’s Ripple Effect theme also explores the smaller ideas that eventually lead to big impacts emerging outside of the tech giants’ umbrellas — particularly within the realm of startups and entrepreneurship.
The festival’s third theme, Lost and Found is an examination of rediscovered industries and skillsets that are shaping our modern economy — a theme embodied by the landmark venue anchoring the weekend music experience, the Carrie Furnaces. This national historic landmark was once a part of the historic Homestead Steel Works.

- Large-scale, interactive art installations that delighted crowds by allowing them create their own sonic experiences, remix a song by headliner Grimes, or experience the hum of Burt’s Bees hives like never before.
- Free events throughout downtown Durham ranging from free outdoor concerts to workshops and special events for kids.
The festival was also projected to spur $5 million in direct visitor spending and almost $7 million in economic impact, according to The Durham Convention and Visitors Bureau. Although official reports have not come in, businesses in Durham celebrated record sales and near-constant activity throughout the weekend
“We were so happy to welcome Moogfest in its inaugural year in Durham along with the thousands of people who came to celebrate, enjoy great music and conversations and learn about new advances in technology,” said Shelly Green, CEO of the Durham CVB. “We think it was an awesome event for attendees and for Durham. Our restaurants, hotels, shops, and entertainment venues were packed with diverse and eclectic crowds.”
London-based sister act, Bloom Twins, have unveiled their new single ‘Amnesia,' to be taken from their forthcoming debut LP due out later this year. The track, a perfect example of the girls’ dark pop, that serves up haunting dual vocals set against an electro backbone.
The track was produced by one of London’s best-kept secrets, UK songwriter, musician and producer Anthony Marshall who has worked with some of the biggest and brightest stars who have shaped today’s musical landscape. His impressive resume includes a diversity of superstars - Britney Spears, Jennifer Lopez, Simply Red, Pet Shop Boys, K-Ci and JoJo, Craig David, to name a few.
The sound that has emerged is an intoxicating mix, shaped by their unusual background and perspective, crossing over several genres of music. They fuse stylish electronica with haunting melodies, delivered in their distinctive vocal style, and embellished with the sound of the flute, harmonica and piano, creating truly modern results.
Throughout 2014 Bloom Twins continued to build their online presence releasing a string of new songs and videos, which generated big social media attention. They also performed at a series of exclusive live events from The Great Escape to Hermes’s Flaneur Experience in London, Heart Ibiza, the Summer Series at Somerset House, and the iconic Ronnie Scotts.
They finished the year as the opening act for Duran Duran on their Paper Gods UK arena tour, which included a stunning performance at The O2 in London. Duran Duran’s Nick Rhodes was so impressed by the twins that he has produced the majority of their forthcoming debut album.
Since then, fashion titles including Vogue, Wonderland and Hunger have heralded them further along with Bloom Twins being named as one of MTV’s Artist Of The Week.
Ahead of that album release, "Amnesia," shows that Bloom Twins have fulfilled their early promise and are set to be one of the most exciting new artists on the pop scene.
Emerging in late 2012 with a sound that was all his own, Tor’s debut album Drum Therapy was the culmination of over a decade of quietly honing his craft. Now over 3 years since his debut, the Vancouver-based experimental producer returns with his sophomore album Blue Book, set for release today June 3rd, on Emancipator's Loci Records.
"I've been working on Blue Book over the past 2 and a half years - it took a long time to push through creative dry spells and the weight of my own expectations after my first album. I wanted to get outside my comfort zone and try new sounds and I learned a lot about my creative process along the way. It's definitely a snapshot of who I was while making it and i think you can hear that changing as the album plays through. To me it represents getting back in touch with my creative side in a big way after years of looking for purpose, and what it means to dedicate yourself to an unconventional life." - Tor
Blue Book serves as the perfect follow up to his debut album - a natural evolution of the best qualities of his previous work, while pushing his sound forward with new sonic palettes, ideas and tempos. Named after a childhood drawing book, the album references a raw creative time in Tor’s life with the theme of reconnecting with that part of him after years of looking for purpose. It’s a record that plays like a journey from start to nish, with rhythmic bell patterns, chopped vocal harmonies, atmospheric swells, warm basslines, and a newfound love of analog synthesizers all taking his songs to new levels, and establishes that Tor is an artist whose trajectory will be exciting to follow for years to come.
After catching the attention of Emancipator, Tor's debut album, Drum Therapy, became the first release for the all-new Loci Records. Even though Tor’s background had been strictly studio- based, he quickly found footing in the touring world supporting established acts like Emancipator & Bluetech on national U.S. tours, performing at multiple festivals such as Shambhala, BassCoast, What The Festival & Burning Man, in addition to remixing artists like ODESZA.

The party will go around the clock this September as the Thrival Innovation + Music Festival announces its official after party schedule. Thrival Innovation + Music Festival is an annual event featuring multiple days of interactive, interdisciplinary, innovation-focused programming capped by a two-day outdoor live music experience, this year's music highlights include diverse performances by The Chainsmokers, CHVRCHES, Thievery Corp, Metric, Ty Dollar $ign, Hudson Mohawke, Lettuce, Sir The Baptist+ many others.
Festival coordinators determined four respective locations for its official after parties located on Pittsburgh’s North and South Sides as host sites, as the James Street Gastropub and Speakeasy, Alphabet City, the Mattress Factory, and the Rex Theater welcome festival attendees for late night festivities.
A blend of historic sites, new developments, and established Pittsburgh venues are the focus for this year, according to festival organizers. The after parties also serve as fundraisers for host sites, or partner nonprofits and their programming initiatives, as weeknight party entry fees are solely a “bring-what-you-can” donation. The weekend after show tickets range from $15 to $25, respectively.
“Whether it’s a 50 cent or 50-dollar donation, we want to make sure the entire community can come and enjoy the evening parties. They’ll be fantastic events and a lot of fun — but not financially out of reach for anyone,” says Dan Law, Thrival executive producer.
Tuesday night takes attendees over to a local music scene favorite, the James Street Gastropub and Speakeasy — with donations going to the nonprofit Radiant Hall. Music acts include the Anton DeFade Trio, Thrival 2015 alumnus Courtesy, as well as local indie-folk favorite, Ferdinand the Bull.
Wednesday’s late night party sets down at Alphabet City (a recently redeveloped Masonic Temple). An initiative of City of Asylum, a Pittsburgh-based nonprofit serving as a sanctuary for endangered literary writers, Alphabet City soon opens its doors to the public, with the weeknight Thrival after party serving as one of the spaces first public events. JENESIS Magazine artist, DJ Gianni Carter, and alternative funk act Chupacabra are scheduled to perform. Donations support City of Asylum and its mission. Prior to these music acts will be an exclusive sneak preview of Generation Startup, a documentary featuring the journeys of 6 young entrepreneurs in the highly selective Venture for America program.
On Thursday, September 21, Phil Hartnoll, one half of legendary electronic act Orbital, spins at the Mattress Factory alongside veteran DJ and producer, King Britt, and dance remix mastermind, Tommie Sunshine. The event will be a warm up for upcoming 40th anniversary celebrations for the installation art museum, as well as donation drive for a new James Turrell installation piece, “Skyspace.” The world-renowned light artist recently donated designs (valued at $1 million) to the Mattress Factory to begin the as-of-now unfunded installation process.
On Friday and Saturday night, after shows kick off on Pittsburgh’s South Side jam/funk stalwart location, the Rex Theater — which features bass music producer/DJ, Buku, on Friday, and California psychedelic rock band, Chris Robinson and the Brotherhood, on Saturday night.
Behind every great album lies an unheard story. Now, as the sun sets on 2016, Portland's very own Emancipator shares the story of his debut album, "Soon It Will Be Cold Enough" through his latest release: a double-sided EP titled "Maps & Father King."
"Ten years ago, I released "Soon It Will Be Cold Enough" on CD-Rs, biking to the post office a few times a week to send out whatever orders trickled in through the Paypal address I had posted on Myspace. Somehow it reached the ears of iconic Japanese hip-hop producer Nujabes and was released on his label, Hydeout Productions. In addition to giving the album a professional mixdown, Nujabes suggested a new tracklist that omitted two songs, "Maps" and "Father King." - Emancipator
Emancipator will be releasing the special "Maps & Father King" EP on 11/11. While long time fans may recognize the tracks as staples from Emancipator's live sets, the release on his very own Loci Records imprint brings fresh cuts in the form of remixes from Star Slinger, Kodak To Graph, Catching Flies, and Imagined Herbal Flows.
“As a special nod to the ten year anniversary of my first album and these two lost tracks, which are still dear to me and many of my listeners, I'll be releasing a special 'Maps & Father King' EP on November 11th with both tracks remastered and remixed by four different producers. I'm very excited to give new life to these songs in the form of this special release.” - Emancipator

Between the countless tour dates, festivals, and studio time, Emancipator (aka Doug Appling); the Portland, OR based electronic producer, has retained a steady rise of success. With a catalog of four full length original albums and a steady well curated roster for his imprint, Loci Records, this young entrepreneur shows no signs of slowing down. Known for its etheric melodies, immaculately smooth arrangement, and addictive drum beats, Emancipator’s music has captivated a diverse audience across the globe.

You need to be made of stone to brave the open road as a touring musician. One not so precious stone is ruby. Scottish singer-songwriter Lesley Rankine is ruby.
After beginning her career as the lead singer/provocateur of seminal UK noise-band Silverfish, where she coined the now infamous slrubogan - “Hips Tits Lips Power” and making her mark as an early member of Pigface, the loose knit industrial noise super-group with Trent Reznor, Skinny Puppy’s Ohgr, Paul Raven of Killing Joke, and Martin Atkins of PiL, Rankine created her solo project, ruby and released material via labels such as Creation, Witchita, and Sony.
Known for not only mixing up genres, The LA Times made this observation during a live performance;"Lesley Rankine put a twist on the in-your-face cliches of contemporary rock: Fronting her band, ruby, she seemed to want us to be in her face. When not lilting out lines detailing hard lessons of sexual politics--damaged but wiser--the Scottish singer stood unblinkingly with mouth agape, twitching her head or unconsciously wagging her tongue, practically demanding to be seen and heard. And it worked."
With a personal inviation from Martin Atikins to open for Pigface's 25 year anniversary gala, a one time performance at House of Blues in Chicago this Black Friday and equipped with a new EP in hand, Rankine is becoming reaquainted with US shores and taking her one woman show on the road.
Live, the ruby sound is produced using a plethora of electronic instruments, with cigar-box guitar, FX boxes and home-made, circuit-bending gadgets. Something akin to spending the evening in a 21st century version of Caractacus Pott’s shed, the tone of the show lilts and staggers between raucous noise-mongering and emotive, delicate melody, usually punctuated with warts-n’-all dialog and stories from Rankine with her off-piste, strictly adult humour and of course all snarls, glares and Quasimodo grimaces.
ruby’s first release was the acclaimed electronic-downtempo-trip hop album "Salt Peter", a classic of the mid '90's alternative & dance music scenes. The album was recorded entirely digitally - a method that was still very innovative at that time. "Salt Peter" & the follow-up "Short-Staffed at the Gene Pool" were remixed by the likes of Primal Scream, Gilles Peterson, Danny Saber, the Mekons, Mira Calix, Conor Oberst. While ruby continued to tour through the early 2000s, her next official release didn't come until a decade later.
In 2013 Lesley made a long-awaited return from self-imposed hibernation with her first new music in over a decade. The sparse, melancholic and hypnotic first salvo from her new collection was the title track “Waiting For Light”, which showcased Rankine’s dark, soft and emotive vocals. The full album of the same name followed in 2014, independently released, and partly funded by a very successful Pledgemusic campaign. The critical acclaim that resulted was definitive proof of ruby's return.
ruby is playing live at intimate venues this November and December.

To our global community of artists, technologists, futurists, and activists. Once again, we are stunned by discriminatory politics in our beloved home of North Carolina and across the U.S. Last March, North Carolina state legislature passed House Bill 2, which eliminated anti-discrimination protections for all lesbians, gays, and bisexuals, and barred transgender people from using bathrooms that do not match the gender they were born with. Moogfest took an immediate stand against the law, reaffirmed our commitment to protest inequality, and offered a safe space for all artists, fans, and visitors who attended. This past December, despite the ongoing work of our community and our allies, lawmakers failed to repeal the law.
Now, as we prepare for the 2017 festival, we are faced with new and mounting concerns. Lawmakers in Texas, South Dakota, Virginia and Kansas have taken steps toward enacting laws similar to HB2. And in his first few days in office, the 45th president has taken actions, such as the travel ban, that threaten our foundational beliefs and intimidate members of our diverse global network of thinkers and makers. But we are not afraid. We are not hateful. We are alive in our mission to bring the dream of a more equal society to all humans. We seek out facts, respect evidence-based science, and welcome a wide-open worldview. We believe this base of knowledge powers creativity, imagination, and innovation.
We stand with the millions who marched on January 21st in cities around the world for the rights of women. We fiercely support the march’s mission of standing “together, recognizing that defending the most marginalized among us is defending all of us.” We also stand with those who have been continuing to protest over the last few weeks. The intersectionality of those participating in these protests makes it clear that we cannot turn inwards, and we cannot exist solely for the individual. As said by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. while behind bars for protesting in Birmingham, AL, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere. We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality, tied in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”
We are inspired by this movement and the spirit of those that came before it. The fight against inequality echoes our own mission to design radical instruments for change and reflects the legacy of Bob Moog, the visionary behind Moogfest who vehemently believed that true innovation comes through collaboration, not exclusion. Moogfest is transformed, by the urgency of our times, and we invite you to keep marching with us into the future.
Write to North Carolina politicians to share your love for the people of our state and your strong opposition to HB2 and other discriminatory laws. You can write your own or use this form from Equality NC or this form from Democracy.io
Support the work of our allies at the ACLU of North Carolina and in other states around the country.
Join us at Moogfest 2017 and attend the Synthesize Love march, a protest celebration to open the festival. Click here to learn more.
The Damned blazed a trail when they became the very first British punk band to release a single, the mighty “New Rose,” on October 22nd 1976, which was swiftly followed by the release of the very first British punk album, their classic debut long-player ‘Damned Damned Damned,’ originally released by a nascent Stiff Records on February 18th 1977. Now, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the band’s dramatic breakthrough, BMG will release a very special Art Of The Album deluxe edition of that incredible debut album on February 17th, almost exactly 40 years to the day since its original issue.
Formed in 1976, The Damned really need no introduction… As well as releasing the first ever British punk single and album, they also broke further new ground as the first UK punk act to tour America. The Damned still receive their dues in the US, where they are often cited as a major influence on many future rock acts, including bastions of the nascent US hardcore scene such as Black Flag and Bad Brains plus heavy metal heavyweights such as Green Day, The Offspring and Guns ’N’ Roses (the LA rockers acknowledged the debt when they covered “New Rose” on their 1993 album ‘The Spaghetti Incident’).
In the recording studio (Pathway Studios) alongside producer Nick Lowe in late 1976, the band – David Vanian (vocals), Captain Sensible (bass), Brian James (guitar) and Rat Scabies (drums) - produced an alchemic, heady new British rock sound; a menacing mix of tough New York punk rock (chief songwriter Brian James was an early-adopter with a passion for The Ramones that quickly fed through to his bandmates) and Detroit sleaze - the album ends with a cover of The Stooges’ “1970,” here renamed “I Feel Alright”. These predominantly American influences were mixed with a subtle flourish of late-60s British psychedelia and a dash of gothic Hammer Horror for good measure (perhaps inspired by frontman David Vanian’s pre-punk career as a grave-digger?), already pointing to acclaimed future directions for the band. The album was neatly spearheaded by a brace of classic punk singles in the aforementioned “New Rose” and the blistering follow-up “Neat Neat Neat”. As the album’s sleeve famously (and correctly) states, this is music; “Made to be played loud at low volume”!
Now, almost exactly four decades to the day later and with the band still selling-out venues right across the world, The Damned’s hugely influential classic debut is celebrated here in BMG’s new ‘Art of The Album’ series, featuring fully remastered audio and new sleevenotes within both the CD & LP formats recalling the story of the band’s conception and the album’s creation. Comprehensively researched and written by legendary punk writer John Ingham, these new sleevenotes cover in-depth the story of the album & the period in which it was written & recorded, the key players in its creation, the craft and instrumentation, the impact upon release and its legacy 40 years later. Via exclusive interviews with original band members Dave Vanian, Captain Sensible, Brian James and Rat Scabies, John Ingham (best known for writing the first ever review of The Damned and the first ever interview with The Sex Pistols - both in UK music weekly ‘Sounds’ in 1976) is perfectly placed to recount the early hedonistic days of the band in this definitive release of one of the most influential albums of all time.
In the age of immediacy, accessibility, streaming and a la carte downloads, the concept of an album or long player has become somewhat lost. ‘The Art of The Album is a new series looking to refocus the attention on the album as a format. With a collection of seminal and classic LPs, the Art of The Album series will celebrate albums that broke new ground in concept, production, song writing and genre, leaving a lasting legacy as a complete album work of art.

This year, for the very first time, Moogfest will partner with SXSW on a day-long program in Austin, TX. With the recent news that Texas lawmakers have proposed legislation similar to HB2, the festival will bring its signature Future Thought and Future Sound experience to SXSW for an exploration of diversity and inclusion. The daytime program includes a Future Thought conversation called OUR DIVERSE FUTURE: Optimism Alongside Discrimination, from NC to TX featuring thought-leaders paving the future across various disciplines as well as a performative Installation by The Holladay Brothers. The nighttime Future Sound portion of the event will feature performances from various electronic artists, some which will be performing at Moogfest 2017 including Suzanne Ciani, Russell E.L. Butler, and Professor Toon.
In addition to the Future Thought Future Sound programming, Moogfest will present a pop-up version of its popular electronic bazaar, the Modular Marketplace. The interactive shop will showcase select instrument makers including Moog Music, Future Retro, Rare Waves, and Switched On. SXSW Festival Programmer Jes Elliott acknowledges that, "SXSW and Moogfest share similar DNA with a deep interest in promoting discovery and convergence. We’re very pleased to have Moogfest return for another year of conversation and music surrounding the intersection of pioneering music and technology."
Now in its 11th iteration, Moogfest remains committed to growing a global community of futurists who explore emerging sound technologies and design radical instruments for change. Since last year, the festival has been based in Durham, North Carolina, alongside a booming technology scene, at the center of the famed Research Triangle. By day, the festival explores Future Thought---a daytime series of presentations, conversations, workshops and installations. By night, Moogfest celebrates ‘Future Sound’ with nighttime performances by early pioneers in electronic music, alongside pop and avant garde experimentalists. In 2016, Moogfest welcomed 40,000 attendees from 22 countries and 41 states (with 5.6 million livestream viewers), despite boycotts and corporate divestment after HB2, the controversial ‘bathroom bill’.
SXSW dedicates itself to helping creative people achieve their goals. Founded in 1987 in Austin, Texas, SXSW is best known for its conference and festivals that celebrate the convergence of the interactive, film, and music industries. SXSW proves that the most unexpected discoveries happen when diverse topics and people come together.

This year returns with adventurous formats such as live film scores, an overnight live music sleep concert, prelude to sleep listening parties, long-form durational performances, and presentations by leading Instrument Designers.
Moogfest has also invited artists including Gotye and Peanut Butter Wolf to help honor some of the innovative musicians we lost in 2016, including Jean-Jacques Perrey, Pauline Oliveros, Bernie Worrell and Keith Emerson. This 2017 lineup reinforces Moogfest’s commitment to bold experimentation, with some of the most important musicians and thinkers of our day helping to blur the lines between audience and artist, conversation and collaboration, technology and creativity.

Today Moogfest announces their last and final additions to the 2017 festival, rounding out an already impressive lineup with DJ Premier, Zola Jesus, King Britt, Jana Hunter, Baltra, IDEO, Modular on the Spot, and Durham music collective The Floor. This announcement builds on Moogfest’s trajectory: balancing Future Sound (performances) and Future Thought (conference) conversations and workshops, with artists and technologists who participate in both sides of the program.
Grammy-award winning producer and half of the legendary hip hop duo Gang Starr, DJ Premier will grace the stage at this year’s festival. Premiere’s prized productions have threaded through the decades, defining the sound of multiple generations of hip-hop. Always evolving yet timeless, celebrated rappers and lyricists from KRS-One to Kanye West, have called on Premier to create the sonic foundation for their voices.
Dark wave electronic artist Zola Jesus is set to perform from her unreleased 5th studio album, TAIGA. Described by the artist herself, “The music on the record is massive, with big brass and beats, crystal clear vocals.” King Britt has prepared a Moogfest exclusive part live part DJ (hybrid set) fusing his mastery in track selection with live hardware electronics including two Mother-32s, while NYC-based producer Baltra will perform a DJ set showcasing his expertise of gritty underground techno productions.
Moogfest is proud to invite select 2016 participants to return this year, but has prompted them to contribute in entirely new ways. Last year award-winning design firm IDEO created a much-talked about sound installation. This year, they return to Moogfest with a host of top-tier minds in a workshop series that explores creative confidence, rapid prototyping and future narrative through the making of speculative sound machines. Last year, Moogfest alum Jana Hunter (Lower Dens) hosted a conversation with Laurie Anderson. This year she hosts a late-night DJ set. Modular on the Spot founders Eric (Rodent) Cheslak and Bana Haffar bring back their unique environment-specific outdoor eurorack synthesizer performances to downtown Durham.
Last year, the best underground after-party at Moogfest was organized by The Floor, a local collective known for amplifying the talents of regional DJs. For the 2017 festival, Moogfest organizers have partnered with The Floor to curate a lineup including DJ Bosslady, Andrius, Sound Resurgence, Ladyfingers, 3ZKL, and Strider -- talent that is all local to North Carolina.
Today’s announcement also includes 6 additions to the festival’s film program -- Tony Conrad: Completely in the Present which examines the pioneering work and life of the artist Tony Conard;Tomorrow: Travel the World of Solutions a in-depth documentary exploring solutions to climate change from around the world; Two films led by Moogfest 2017 artist Zena Loxton SpeakUP: The Power of Lyrics, which follows the life of a group of creative activists, hip hop artists, and journalists who came together in 2012 to create a revolution through music in Senegal and SpeakUP: Women of Africa, which looks at Grammy-winner Angelique Kidjo journey in Dakar as she passionately meets young female artists, inspiring them to continue using their work as a platform for social change; Transfiguration, an official selection at the Cannes Film Festival, scored by Moogfest 2017 performer Pharmakon, which follows a troubled teens fascination with vampire lore; and Life in Waves, a film which explores Suzanne Ciani’s pioneering work through her eyes.
The full list of participants announced today is as follows: DJ Premier, Zola Jesus, King Britt, Jana Hunter, Baltra, IDEO, Modular on the Spot, DJ Bosslady, Andrius, Sound Resurgence, Lady Fingers, 3ZKL, Strider, Virginia Tech ICAT, ONO, Brandon Stosuy, Elliot Inman, Johnny Turpin, Krista Anne, Fannie Mae, Frankie Hutchinson, Hisham Bharoocha, Joseph Murray, Marshall King, Valencia Wood, Elizabeth Traina, Zena Loxton, Jessica Collette, Raj Bhakta, Senator Jaiz, Give a Beat, Armida Ascano, Pierce Freelon, and films Tony Conrad: Completely in the Present, Tomorrow: Travel the World of Solutions, SpeakUP: The Power of Lyrics, and SpeakUP: Women of Africa, Transfiguration, and Life in Waves.
Moogfest came into orbit yesterday kicking off a sequence of events to our 4 days of synthesizing music, art, and technology. You could feel the electricity stirring in the air as people began to trickle into Durham. Beginning early in the day the Moog Pop-Up factory began building the Subsequent 37 CV synthesizer that debuted at the festival. The conjoined rooms at the Power Plant Gallery hosted an array of various synthesizers and manufacturers in the Modular Marketplace.
The day moved into Future Thought, hosting workshops, discussions, experiential art installations, and further electric activity. Highlights included Moor Mother entrancing an audience with her durational performance, Talib Kweli engaging in conversation with David Graham (The Atlantic) over the nature of media in the age of the Trump administration, and S1’s workshops demystifying the powers and learning of synthesis .
On into the evening, things started to boom with our Future Sound series programming. The focal point of the night took place at Motorco Park hosting our ode to Protest. Multi-faceted artist Mykki Blanco, prolific Syrian born singer Omar Souleyman, rap game legend Talib Kweli, and triangle area punk band Pie Face Girls took the stage in full force. Comedian Hannibal Buress made a surprise appearance to introduce Talib Kweli, and will be staying through the weekend to moderate conversations with Animal Collective & Syrinx and Flying Lotus. Over at the Armory, UK underground techno legends 808 State played their first show in over 20 years, filling the room with breakbeats and winding bass to move to. Avalon Emerson was the perfect follow-up.

We're pleased to announce that techno originator Juan Atkins has joined the Moogfest lineup tonight to replace Thomas Dolby, who unfortunately fell ill yesterday and had to cancel his highly anticipated appearances. We wish Thomas godspeed toward his complete recovery.
Juan will perform in Thomas's previously scheduled slot at the Carolina Theatre, 8:00 to 9:15 p.m. before GAS. We're looking forward to this formidable one-two punch of techno masters.
Single-day passes are available here.
