In honor of the 75th Anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge, Mickey Hart, two-time Grammy winning artist and percussionist of the Grateful Dead, will perform an original composition of the sounds of the bridge at Crissy Field on May 27th.  As Hart will tell you, the Golden Gate Bridge is not simply a bridge; it is a giant wind-harp. “The most famous bridge in America is actually a musical instrument, which sings its signature song every day, yet its song has never been heard before,” says Hart. “Imagine hearing the bridge as intensely as you hear an intimate whisper, a scary scream, an ever-present low-level hum.”

To compose the piece, Hart used data from accelerometers placed all over the span, and “sonified” the data with the help of Mark Ballora of Penn State, Ben Yonas and Jonah Sharp.  “Sonification is the process of converting information and data into music,” explains Hart. “These accelerometers, designed primarily for seismic events, monitor vibrations of the bridge.  The Golden Gate Bridge vibrates from its toes (earth, water) to its thighs (pillars of cement and steel), to its torso and crown (air, sky). We have created a musical soundscape based on the real sounds of the bridge.”

Hart will be performing his work live on a 23-foot long, stainless steel scale model of the Golden Gate Bridge. “Our replica of the bridge, which I like to call Bridget, was built by a team of Exploratorium designers and engineers, and this model will be used in our performance to play the extraordinary sounds we have captured.”

Hart has many reasons for “sonifying” the iconic bridge. “The bridge connects.  It links space and place above, below and across. It spans landscape and memory; it joins life and lore. Passengers below in boats, along its deck in cars, and above in planes, all experience the bridge. When the 1.7-mile long suspension span opened in 1937, the Golden Gate Bridge was instantly acknowledged among the technological and engineering wonders of the world. Seventy-five years later, it remains inspiringly beautiful, a lasting symbol of California, of human tenacity and ingenuity, beloved by our city and visited annually by millions of people from around the world.”

Joining Hart on stage for the performance will be the Mickey Hart Band, which released their latest album, Mysterium Tremendum, in April, where Hart “sonified” the sounds of the universe going all the way back to the big bang, transferring light waves into sound waves.

The Mickey Hart Band will perform their tribute to the bridge on May 27th at 10pm on the Crissy Field Stage in San Francisco, CA as the finale of the Golden Gate Bridge Festival.

The 75th Anniversary of the Golden Gate Bridge is a project of the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District and the Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy in collaboration with the National Park Service, Presidio Trust, and the City & County of San Francisco. Anniversary events include the Golden Gate Festival along the San Francisco waterfront on May 27, 2012; and 75 Tributes to the Golden Gate Bridge, a year-long series of public programs by community organizations presented throughout the San Francisco Bay Area in 2012. Three time Grammy winner, Mickey Hart, will perform with his band at Stellarfest at the Mishawaka Amphitheatre in Bellvue, CO on August 24th and August 25th.  The show will feature brand new material as well as selections of Hart's greatest hits and Grateful Dead songs.

Hart's new album entitled Mysterium Tremendum, his first in five years and follow up to the 2007 Grammy award winning Global Drum Project, was released on April 10th, 2012.

With Mysterium Tremendum, Hart is pushing the boundaries of what we know as music, creating a genre of his own. "I have always thought of life, the world at large, as music," says Hart. "This work is a representation of that notion. I have combined sonic images of the formation of our universe with sounds drawn from musical instruments. It’s all about the vibrations that make up the infinite universe. In this case, they began as light waves and these light waves are still washing over us. Scientists at Penn State, Lawrence Berkeley Labs, and Meyer Sound have transformed these light waves into sound waves. These musical excursions transport me to wonderful and strange new places filled with rhythms for a new day. The combination of music from the whole earth and the sounds of the planets, the stars, the events that formed our universe is intoxicating and points toward an awareness of what music is, could be, and where it comes from."

For this new work Hart joined with long time Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter. "Hunter is a bold visionary writer who knows where I am going with this music," says Hart. " He is indispensable to the weave of this story. The way he writes, the imagery and mythology, are perfect for this project. Nobody writes like Robert Hunter.”

On Mysterium Tremendum, the Mickey Hart Band consists of Widespread Panic bassist Dave Schools, Grammy winning percussionist and longtime band mate Sikiru Adepoju, Tony Award winning vocalist Crystal Monee Hall, singer and multi-instrumentalist Joe Bagale, drummer Ian "Inx" Herman, guitarist Gawain Matthews, and keyboardist / producer, Ben Yonas.

Mysterium Tremendum is out now on Hart's own 360° Productions. The album, recorded at Hart's Studio X in Sonoma County, CA, was co-produced by Hart and Ben Yonas. Special guests Steve Kimock, Reed Mathis appear on select tracks as well as long time collaborators, Zakir Hussain, and Giovanni Hidalgo.

In 2011, Smithsonian Folkways Recordings released "The Mickey Hart Collection" which includes 25 albums drawn from “The World,” a series that incorporates Hart’s solo projects, field recordings and titles he produced of artists’ such as Babatunde Olatunji, Hamza El Din and the Gyuto Monks Tantric Choir.

The Mickey Hart Band is currently offering a free download of their new single "Slow Joe Rain" on his site at MickeyHart.net/download.

The Mickey Hart Band has released a new song, "Jersey Shore," to benefit Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.  To download the song and help rebuild the shore go to http://www.mickeyhart.net/jersey.  Those who make a donation will also receive two bonus hours of music including the full length performance of the Mickey Hart Band Live on the Jersey Shore (August 17, 2012), and tracks from the band's latest album, Mysterium Tremendum."I was a kid from Coney Island, Atlantic Beach and Far Rockaway," said Hart. "The Shore was the totem, the centerpiece, a physical representation of community spirit for many generations.  My inspiration for this song began when I saw Brian Williams on the NBC Evening News.   Brian showed distress clearly in his eyes and voice.   It was a deep loss, not just property, but so much more.  Jon Bon Jovi was with Brian, telling the story of personal loss of his sense of place growing up, losing his most precious places, now only memories--powerful, moving words.  After the broadcast, it was birthing time.  The song was born in 5 minutes.  It is a tribute to the people and to the place we call The Jersey Shore.  It’s a song of victory over adversity. A song of hardship, of hope, tears, and smiles--but above all survival.  It's time to rebuild what we've lost.  Let's bring back the beauty.  Your help is needed now, more than ever.  Please give what you can." 100% of the proceeds of "Jersey Shore" will go to Clean Ocean Action, who have organized over 3,800 volunteers since November 2012.  Volunteers have worked on various projects including beach sweeps, toy drives for children displaced by Sandy, home and business cleanups, and "memorabilia" cleanups where they find items that may be highly significant and catalog them so people can find them via the local police department.  To become a volunteer with Clean Ocean Action, go to http://fortheshore.org.

The Mickey Hart Band has announced new May tour dates for the second leg of their Worlds Within tour.  The band will once again bring along Babatunde Olatunji protege's, the African Showboyz, as main support for the tour. The band has also released three free live tracks from their 3/6/13 Solana Beach, CA show including the brand new song, "The Sermon" featuring  lyrics by Robert Hunter. "The Sermon", along with Grateful Dead classics "Ramble On Rose" and "Playing in the Band", is available at mickeyhart.net/download.Hart commented on the progression of the band in a recent interview with the Tahoe Daily Tribune. "We played 100 shows last year and it really tells when we get on stage," said Hart. "The band is on fire. We are ready to play and this is going to be a great year for us."The band is currently in the studio working on the follow up to Mysterium Tremendum. The Worlds Within Tour has provided great opportunity for the band to test out new material, including songs co-written by Hart and Robert Hunter.  "We have traversed the macro, the stars, the planets, now we journey into the micro," says Hart.  "This band is truly a living, breathing organism."The African Showboyz recently became accustomed to the ways of the Deadheads on the first leg of the near sold out tour.  In an article by the Aspen Times, Napoleon Sabbah, the band's leader, talked about seeing a fan at a show in Lake Tahoe a few weeks ago. Two nights later, he saw the same gentleman at a concert in Eugene, Ore., nearly 500 miles away.  “I thought maybe he was a sound engineer,” Sabbah said from a tour stop in Boulder. “I told security — this man followed us from there to here. He said, ‘That's the way it is.'”  Sabbah also noted that they feel that not only are they learning from Hart, but that Hart is becoming a bit more African in his musical expression.  “He's playing, and at the same time, he's chanting,” Sabbah said. “Which makes it more special, spiritual. In the northern part of Ghana, we chant.”Tickets for the second leg of the Worlds Within tour are currently on sale at www.mickeyhart.net/shows.  100% of the ticketing fees sold through Mickeyhart.net will go to fund Music Therapy Research at UCSF.   All tickets sold through the website will include a free Mysterium Tremendum poster.Mickey Hart Band Tour Dates05/08/13 Neighborhood Theatre - Charlotte, NC05/09/13 NorVa - Norfolk, VA05/10/13 Stage 48 - New York, NY05/11/13 Kempton Music Center - Kempton, PA- Rex Foundation Fundraiser05/13/13 Avalon Theatre - Easton, MD05/14/13 The Howard Theatre - Washington, DC05/15/13 World Café Live- Wilmington, DE05/17/13 The Palace – Stafford Springs, CT05/18/13 Flying Monkey Performance Center – Plymouth, NH05/19/13 Paradise Rock Club - Boston, MA05/21/13 Higher Ground - So. The Mickey Hart Band will release their second album in two years on August 13th, 2013, titled Superorganism, just weeks before Hart's 70th Birthday.  On the band's last record, Mysterium Tremendum (2012), Hart sonified light waves from space with the help of NASA and scientists from Penn State and Lawrence Berkeley Labs. Now, with Superorganism, Hart is going even deeper. "This time we journey into the micro, the hidden worlds of rhythm within us, within our bodies," says Hart. "The brain, Rhythm Central, the place of dreams is explored. My brain wave signals are reimagined in sound using a cap with electrodes that can read the throbs and signals of the brain. I have also sonified the sounds of stem cells, and heart rhythms for this recording."  This idea began early in 2012 with Hart's research of the affect of rhythm on the brain with Dr. Adam Gazzalley of UCSF.  The album will once again feature lyrics from Hart's longtime collaborator and Grateful Dead lyricist, Robert Hunter, as well as many special guest musicians.  The band recently released three free live tracks from their 3/6/13 Solana Beach, CA show including the brand new song, "The Sermon", featuring lyrics by Hunter.  "The Sermon", along with Grateful Dead classics "Ramble On Rose" and "Playing in the Band", is available at mickeyhart.net/download.

The band will kick off their 2013 Superorganism Tour on August 1st in Healdsburg, CA, with special guests the Tea Leaf Trio (Trevor Garrod, Reed Mathis, and Cochrane McMillan of Tea Leaf Green) supporting the majority of the dates.  Mathis will be performing double duties each night, performing with Tea Leaf Trio and the Mickey Hart Band.

Each night of the tour, Hart will perform with an EEG cap on his head while he plays the sounds of his brain.  To see an example of how this will work, watch Hart and Gazzalley's talk at AARP in New Orleans last November here.

In celebration of Mickey's 70th Birthday, many of the shows will feature special guests including some of his personal friends to be announced in the coming weeks.  100% of the ticketing fees from tickets sold through mickeyhart.net will go to fund Musical Therapy Research at UCSF.  Tickets are on sale now at mickeyhart.net/shows.

The Mickey Hart Band consists of Grammy winning percussionist and longtime band mate Sikiru Adepoju, Tony Award winning vocalist Crystal Monee Hall, singer and multi-instrumentalist Joe Bagale, drummer Greg Schutte, guitarist Gawain Matthews, bassist Reed Mathis, and keyboardist/sound engineer Jonah Sharp.
