The Lowest Pair Find Warmth in Uncertainty on ‘Always As Young As We’ll Ever Be’

Always As Young As We’ll Ever Be will be avaiable on January 23rd, 2026

Starting the new year with their eighth album, Always As Young As We’ll Ever Be, released January 23, The Lowest Pair return with a record that subtly expands their sound while staying true to the close-knit style that defines them. Made up of Kendl Winter and Palmer T. Lee, the duo sound confident, letting the songs unfold naturally as they reflect on love, grief, joy, and disappointment. The album embraces the messiness of the human experience, inviting listeners to find warmth and meaning within its imperfections.

From the first notes, the ten-track album—produced by Tucker Martine (The Decemberists, My Morning Jacket, Neko Case)—draws you into an intimate space. The melodies breathe, while Winter and Lee’s harmonies shimmer. It’s the kind of record that doesn’t demand attention but quietly rewards close listening, revealing the subtle push and pull of life as it unfolds.

“Give It All Away” opens the album with a strong and welcoming introduction. Winter and Lee create remarkable depth with their voices alone, particularly on the repeated lines, “Before the sun there was the rain / Before the rain there was the sun.” Their harmonies rise into a luminous, open moment, supported by gentle guitar plucks and steady rhythms. Subtle drum hits add texture, creating the feeling of stepping from a dark room into the pure bliss of sunlight. This track immediately captures the heart of the album, moving through darkness without rushing past it.

Further into the album, “Tiny Rebellions” marks a bold turn for the duo. It opens with banjo and layered, driving guitar, underscored by thundering percussion. Expressive vocal harmonies complement lyrics that capture the thrill and vulnerability of love: “I think I’m soaked in sweat falling in love again / ineffable beauty and a tiny rebellion.” Even in its darker tones, the song offers quiet release and reflection, making it one of the album’s most striking moments.

Across its ten tracks, Always As Young As We’ll Ever Be doesn’t chase tidy conclusions. Each song contributes to a larger journey that unfolds naturally, revealing the beauty, challenges, and small discoveries of life. Winter and Lee’s sharp lyricism, rich string work, and seamless interplay shine throughout the album.
