There are still rooms in this country where the spirit of the Grateful Dead doesn’t just echo—it lives, breathes, and dances barefoot across the floor. Ashkenaz in Berkeley is one of those rooms. Since opening its doors in 1973, this nonprofit venue has quietly carried forward the communal heartbeat of live music culture—part dance hall, part global gathering place, part psychedelic sanctuary.
This spring, that spirit is alive and well, with a lineup that leans heavily into the Deadhead tradition while continuing to embrace the wide, colorful world of roots, global, and community-driven music.
At the center of it all are the ongoing Grateful Dead Nights, a cornerstone of Ashkenaz culture that keeps the music of Jerry Garcia and company swirling through the room on a regular basis. These nights aren’t just shows—they’re gatherings, where the line between band and audience dissolves into something shared and celebratory.
Leading the charge are multiple appearances from Stu Allen & Mars Hotel, long regarded as torchbearers of the Bay Area Dead tradition. Catch them on March 18, April 1, April 10, and April 15, each night promising deep jams, exploratory improvisation, and that unmistakable sense of musical conversation that defines the Grateful Dead experience.
Also stepping into the circle is Alex Jordan & Friends on March 25, continuing the weekly ritual with a fresh cast of players and perspectives on the Dead’s expansive songbook.
But Ashkenaz has never been about just one sound. It’s about the full spectrum—the hippie ethos of inclusion, movement, and discovery—and that shines through in a schedule that moves effortlessly from bluegrass to zydeco, tango to Balkan dance, salsa to Afro-Brazilian funk.
The Berkeley Bluegrass Barn Jam returns on March 24, offering an open-stage jam alongside a mystery headliner, keeping the improvisational spirit alive and accessible. On March 22, a barn dance led by Laurie Lewis and CaliCo blends square dance tradition with California country energy, while players like Sam Reider and Mark Schatz bring serious musical firepower to the floor.
Dance remains central to the Ashkenaz experience. Whether it’s the monthly Third Thursday Tango on March 19, zydeco-fueled celebrations with Okie Weiss & the Zydeco Playboys on March 26 and Mark St. Mary’s Louisiana Blues & Zydeco Band on April 4, or the swirling rhythms of Balkan Sundays on March 29 and the long-running Balkan Folk Dance series on April 8, the room never stops moving.
Elsewhere, the calendar stretches outward into a global and genre-blurring landscape. SambaDá brings Afro-Brazilian funk grooves on April 3, Chinyakare Ensemble delivers Zimbabwean rhythms on April 18, and Guajirón lights up the floor with Cuban son and salsa on March 28. Even outside the dance tradition, events like Mortified on April 11 and Kevin Carducci’s album release on April 25 reflect the venue’s deep commitment to community storytelling and independent artistry.
And then there are the moments that tie it all together—like the April 17 celebration of the 57th Anniversary of People’s Park, a reminder that in Berkeley, music and community have always been intertwined.
What makes Ashkenaz special isn’t just the lineup—it’s the feeling when you walk through the door. The café opens early, the food is simple and nourishing, the crowd is diverse and welcoming, and the music is always rooted in something real. It’s a place where you don’t just watch—you participate.
In a time when so much of live music feels polished and distant, Ashkenaz remains gloriously human. A little sweaty. A little chaotic. A lot of fun. And on the right night—especially a Grateful Dead night—it can still feel like stepping into a different dimension entirely.
