One of the most commanding voices in roots and Americana music, Alexis P. Suter is joined by Rock & Roll Hall of Famer Garth Hudson of The Band on Just Stay Live, a powerful new concert album captured during a special 2011 performance near Woodstock, New York. Recorded live at The Falcon in Marlboro, NY, and presented in surround sound and ATMOS, the album will be released March 17 via NOLA Blue Records.

The release marks more than three decades at the core of the roots and Americana scenes for Suter, whose voice has long drawn comparisons to Mavis Staples for its gospel-deep power and emotional authority. NPR once wrote of her, “The gale-force winds of her voice… She applies defibrillator paddles to vernacular music… her music merrily straddles genres,” while AllMusic praised her “powerful, commanding, and deeply soulful voice, rooted in gospel music.”

Just Stay Live documents a rare and inspired collaboration. Hudson joins Suter on piano and accordion, bringing his unmistakable melodic intelligence and harmonic imagination to a set that spans gospel, blues, soul, and American roots music. Both artists share deep ties to Woodstock: Suter performed at more than 100 of Levon Helm’s legendary Midnight Rambles, while Hudson relocated to the area in 1967, helping create some of the most enduring recordings in rock history with The Band and Bob Dylan.

The album opens with a steam-driven rendition of “John the Revelator,” followed by Hudson’s spoken introduction and an expansive solo piano improvisation that seamlessly weaves together strands of American musical tradition. Throughout the set, Hudson adds hooks, counter-melodies, and moments of quiet tension, underscoring why he remains one of the most revered musicians of his generation. His expressive piano work is especially striking on the brooding “Hole That I’m In.”

Suter delivers some of the most affecting performances of her career here. She offers a gut-wrenching take on Gregg Allman’s “It’s Not My Cross to Bear,” a song she has never recorded elsewhere, and reimagines Bob Dylan’s “Knocking on Heaven’s Door” with raw conviction. Her spare, aching version of George Harrison’s “Isn’t It a Pity” is exquisite, while “Only I” channels classic soul, and Bobby Blue Bland’s “Turn On Your Love Light” is infused with a rolling New Orleans rhythm.

Throughout the performance, Suter’s band grooves deeply and intuitively, drawing from Louisiana polyrhythms, blues swing, and gospel harmony. Joining Suter and the band on “Rise,” “Only I,” and “Turn On Your Love Light” is guitarist Connor Kennedy (Steely Dan, Chuck Prophet, Amos Lee), adding another layer of fire to the already electrifying ensemble.

Between songs, Suter speaks passionately about love, resilience, and human connection — themes that echo through every note of Just Stay Live. It’s a document not only of a singular concert, but of a life spent channeling tradition into something immediate, personal, and alive.
