Every generation produces a few young bands willing to chase the long road of improvisation, spontaneity, and nightly reinvention. Wax Monkey, a rising five-piece from Birmingham, Alabama, is clearly built in that spirit. On Thursday, August 20, the band brings its fast-growing live show to the Fox Theatre in Boulder for what should be a lively summer gathering of jam-minded music fans.

Wax Monkey is composed of childhood friends who first started jamming together in high school before officially forming the band in 2023 while attending the University of Alabama. That shared history shows up in their chemistry onstage, where loose interplay and trust allow the music to stretch naturally into unexpected places.
Rooted in the tradition of musical exploration, the group draws inspiration from the improvisational worlds of the Grateful Dead, Phish, and The Allman Brothers Band, while blending Southern rock swagger, psychedelic textures, and adventurous jams of their own. It’s a formula that feels both familiar and fresh—classic influences filtered through a younger generation.
Boulder has always welcomed bands that value risk-taking and real-time connection, making the Fox Theatre a fitting room for Wax Monkey’s Colorado stop. Expect exploratory grooves, extended solos, and the kind of crowd energy that comes when fans know anything can happen next.
