Winterland on the Front Range: 1974 Dead Film Screens at Boulder Theater

The Grateful Dead’s beloved concert film The Grateful Dead Movie returns to the big screen this summer as part of the band’s worldwide “Meet-Up at the Movies” 60th-anniversary celebration. Local Dead Heads can catch the exclusive event at the historic Boulder Theater on Thursday, August 14 and Saturday, August 16, 2025. Doors open at 7:30 p.m.; the feature rolls at 8:00 p.m. Limited general-admission seating is available, and tickets are on sale now at Z2 Entertainment.

Filmed over the Dead’s legendary five-night stand at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom in October 1974, The Grateful Dead Movie blends electrifying performances, eye-popping animation, and candid backstage moments, capturing the band—Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, Keith and Donna Godchaux, with Mickey Hart’s triumphant return—at what was then billed as “The Last One.” In keeping with Meet-Up tradition, the 2025 screening adds a never-before-shown bonus: the stunning “China Cat Sunflower → I Know You Rider” sequence from the same Winterland run, projected in theaters for the first time.

This year marks the first theatrical engagement for The Grateful Dead Movie in eight years and anchors the band’s diamond anniversary festivities. Boulder audiences will also have the chance to pick up limited-edition “Meet-Up at the Movies” merchandise—hoodies, T-shirts, caps, and totes—created especially for the 2025 program.

Tickets for all global screenings went on sale this morning at MeetUpAtTheMovies.com, but Boulder Theater patrons are encouraged to secure seats through the venue’s dedicated link above. The event is open to all ages (patrons under 16 must be accompanied by an adult).
