The Magic Beans celebrated 4/20, the relatively new, legalized cannabis holiday in New York state, last Thursday, April 20, 2023 at the Sultan Room in Brooklyn, NY. Nestled in the vibrant Bushwick neighborhood, the sweet smells of THC were omnipresent this evening all around the venue. The Beans kicked the festivities up a notch with a Steely Dan parody, along with their catalog of jam rock, funk, r&b and hip hop originals.

Last week, Phish made their long awaited return to the William Randolph Hearst Greek Theatre, better known as The Greek, and as expected, turned out three great nights of playing in one of northern California’s most reputable and intimate venues. Sitting at the crown of UC Berkeley with its iconic columns and a long history of incredible performances, the 8500 phans who got to witness magic incarnate once again danced and left floating on cloud nine, enraptured in jam and joy.

Missouri-born musician and songwriter Fred “Dave” Davis was a character of note. A Cleveland-based laborer and performer whose influence was felt almost exclusively by those who came face to face with the man, “Dave’s” unique musical touch and almost spiritual take on Kansas City blues would be virtues to which but a select few could attest.

Revered road warriors Bumpin Uglies have released another live acoustic EP of material recorded at the Sugarshack in Western Florida.

Featuring three songs from their recently released album, Mid-Atlantic Dub (“Wild Girls,” Make It Through The Day,” “You Don’t Gotta Die”), one track each from 2019’s Buzz EP (“Serving”) and 2011’s Free Candy full-length (“Lie to Me”) plus a spirited cover of “Cover Me Up,” the Jason Isbell staple from his Southeastern opus, the band sound loose and confident, focused and ebullient.
