Performing at their improvisational best, Ghost Light stopped at Harlow’s in Sacramento on December 14, and their exploratory, psychedelic-tinged jams anchored within an passionate alt-rock fierceness and accentuated by plenty of instrumental peaks of intensity, highlighted the stretched-out nature of the symphonic selections bestowed on the visibly appreciative audience.
“It’s all one planet, one earth, no imaginary borders,” responds Paul Knowles when asked why his band changed their name from New American Farmers to New Earth Farmers. “Also, I think we wanted a less nationalist sounding name, ‘American’ is a bit overused and a bit jingoistic in nature. We wanted something that’s more inclusive that had nothing to do with that frame of mind.”

It’s been almost twenty years since Terry Eldredge, Jamie Johnson, Jimmy Mattingly, Dave Talbot, Terry Smith, and Danny Roberts played a fateful run of shows at the Station Inn (with Bobby Osborne as the special guest) as an unnamed band in February of 2004—the earliest iteration of what would become bluegrass supergroup, The Grascals. The band quickly rose from the hallowed and popcorn-scented Station Inn, and their signature sound of cutting edge bluegrass mixed with Nashville songwriting sensibilities made legions of fast fans.
