Sweetwater Music Hall—an intimate, all-ages, wheelchair-accessible 501(c)(3) in downtown Mill Valley—rolls into late summer and early fall with a run tailor-made for Grateful Web readers: Dead-family collaborations, world-class bluegrass, New Orleans grooves, classic Bay Area rock lineage, and community jams that keep the local scene thriving. Doors open one hour before showtime. Tickets and details at www.sweetwatermusichall.org.
Kicking off tonight (Mon, Aug 25), guitarist Scott Law leads Summer Nights with a powerhouse lineup featuring Grahame Lesh, Brian Rashap, Jay Lane, and Mookie Siegel—an all-star circle perfectly at home in Sweetwater’s Dead-adjacent heritage. The week continues with The Blues Project (Thu, Aug 28), uniting Roy Blumenfeld and company for a deep-cut tour through blues-psychedelia, before the April & Monroe Grisman Band teams with Lorin Rowan & The DeepBlue Jam (Fri, Aug 29) for a family-tree celebration of Marin’s acoustic-roots DNA. Bay Area rock history takes the spotlight with Big Brother & The Holding Company (Sat, Aug 30), followed by a seated homage to timeless songwriting with Still Crazy: A Simon & Garfunkel/Paul Simon Tribute (Sun, Aug 31).
September brings a global-meets-roots blend with reggae icons Black Uhuru plus DJ Adam Twelve (Fri, Sep 12), while New Orleans piano master Jon Cleary & The Absolute Monster Gentlemen (Sun, Sep 14) deliver a night of deep-groove R&B. Progressive pickers Fireside Collective, with Hattie Craven (Thu, Sep 18), keep the modern-grass flame burning, and Like a Rose (Sun, Sep 21) leans into the Jerry Garcia songbook—a natural fit for Sweetwater faithful. Community-minded programming abounds: the Sunday Blues Open Jam hosted by Mitch Woods (Sun, Sep 7, 1 pm, no cover); a free Trombone Shorty Academy Student Show (Sat, Sep 13, noon); and the monthly Marin Bluegrass Sessions (Sun, Sep 28, 12–2 pm, no cover). Open Mic nights with Matt Jaffe (Tue, Aug 26; Tue, Sep 9; Tue, Sep 30) continue to spotlight emerging voices—two songs or ten minutes per performer, with sign-ups at openmic@sweetwatermusichall.org.
Hardly Strictly Bluegrass “Out of the Park” lands in October with two marquee club nights: Reverend Horton Heat with The McCharmlys (Thu, Oct 2) and the Dan Tyminski Band (Fri, Oct 3), the latter a must-see for bluegrass devotees. Rounding out the run, Freestone Peaches (Sat, Oct 4) channels the Allman Brothers’ Southern-jam spirit—another sweet spot for the improvisation-loving Sweetwater crowd.
