This spring, starting April 27th in Kansas City, Missouri, Kinky Friedman, author, musician, politician, and self-proclaimed Governor of the Heart of Texas, will be performing dates throughout the Midwest and East Coast as part of his Springtime for Kinky Tour of 2011. Often returning to places he has not visited in two decades, the Kinkster will appear solo (primarily) and promote his most recent books, What Would Kinky Do? and Heroes of a Texas Childhood.

An exciting mix of folk music's founding voices and modern favorites highlights the 52nd edition of the Newport Folk Festival ® when it returns to Newport's Fort Adams State Park July 30-31, it was announced today by the Newport Festivals Foundation, the recently-formed 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization which produces the event.

Each year, during Memorial Day weekend, the Desert Rocks Music Festival is held at the majestic BFE Ranch, located 10 miles south of Moab. This stellar location for camping and music showcases the breathtaking natural beauty of Utah. The ranch backs up to the La Sal Mountains and boasts its own slot canyon.

The Four Winds Tour continues on Wednesday as we kick off the West coast leg of the tour in Bellingham, WA at the Mt. Baker Theater then cruise down from the northwest corner to Seattle, Portland and Eugene, Oregon. From there it's on into California for shows in Arcata and Santa Cruz before dropping into San Francisco for 3 nights at the Great American Music Hall.

On April 17, 1972 in Copenhagen, Denmark, the Dead played their first-ever live performance of "He's Gone," although you couldn't tell by the confidence of this version. You'll notice that the "Goin' where the wind don't blow so strange..." bridge is absent here, as it had not yet been incorporated into the song. It was added to the song later in the tour.

As previously announced, the 2011 Pitchfork Music Festival will be taking place on Friday, July 15th through Sunday, July 17th at Chicago's Union Park! Tickets went on sale on March 4th, and, as predicted, three-day passes sold out in a record time of 24 hours!

Short and sweet can be a good thing, but when it’s good, everybody wants some more. British musician Lee MacDougall certainly showed that he could satisfy, but unfortunately for the very few that showed up for his performance at the Larimer Lounge, it was a moment that lasted not quite long enough.

Knoxville, Tennessee indie trio Royal Bangs will release their third LP Flux Outside March 29th on Glassnote Records. It’s not everyday that an album like this lands on the desk. Sounds like psychedelic prog-pop, maybe…they prefer to call it “easy shred computer jam.” Whatever it is, the musicianship is incredibly tight, the sound intricate and full.
