Don Was – the veteran, multi-Grammy-winning musician/producer and current president of Blue Note Records – is one of those virtual Renaissance men who always seems to have many pots a stirring. Over time, he has been a bassist, record producer, music director, film composer, documentary film maker and radio host. And 2024 promises to be no less busy for him.

Today, six-time GRAMMY-winning musician, producer, composer, and Blue Note Records President Don Was announced his new group Don Was and The Pan-Detroit Ensemble. Made up of stellar jazz musicians from his hometown, the band features longtime collaborators including Blue Note Records artist Dave McMurray on sax and Eminem’s Oscar-winning collaborator keyboardist Luis Resto. Announced today, a Caribbean concert vacation dubbed “Dead Ahead Festival”. This all-inclusive vacation experience will be hosted at Moon Palace Resort in Riviera Cancún, Mexico January 12-15, 2024. The event will celebrate the Grateful Dead songbook featuring two nights of curated collaborations themed “Dead Ahead” with Bobby Weir, Mickey Hart, Jeff Chimenti, Oteil Burbridge, Don Was & Jay Lane featuring Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi, Rick Mitarotonda, Margo Price and very special guest Sturgill Simpson.

Today, the Folk Americana Roots Hall of Fame, an initiative of the Boch Center in Boston, announced the lineup for the inaugural WasFest, a unique music experience at the Wang and Shubert Theatres. Curated and hosted by musician, legendary producer, and President of Blue Note Records Don Was, the festival will take place June 23-25 and feature some of Was’s longtime collaborators and friends performing unique sets that fans won’t see anywhere else. WasFest is presented by the Folk Americana Roots Hall of Fame and the Boch Center.

Saxophonist Dave McMurray returns with Grateful Deadication 2, the follow-up to his acclaimed 2021 tribute album which once again finds the saxophonist reimagining the songs of the Grateful Dead with his gritty and soulful Detroit sound joined by special guests including Oteil Burbridge, Bob James, Jamey Johnson, Greg Leisz, and Don Was. There’s no other way to describe the Bob Weir & Wolf Brothers winter tour other than stating the obvious—sheer musical brilliance. And that's flat out what's going on here. Trekking across country with near nightly performances, choosing the most intimate, impressive theaters along the way, the Wolf Bros have unleashed such genius, cutting-edge play that this old Deadhead could only shake his head in awe. They were coming at me from so many different levels, and with such zest and creativity, I was dumbstruck in marveling.
