Finally, Pearl Jam closed the main stage with a dynamic, crowd‑pleasing performance. The band fielded rare requests like “Love Boat Captain” and filled their setlist with hits from their heyday—opening with “Corduroy,” and weaving in “Daughter,” “Even Flow” (dedicated to Saints superfan Steve Gleason), “Black,” “Jeremy,” and “Yellow Ledbetter.” They also showcased newer material from last year’s Dark Matter. As tradition dictates, they wrapped up with Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World” and The Who’s “Baba O’Riley,” leaving the audience energized and satisfied.

An infectious gumbo of collective empowerment, the song marks one of the band’s final recordings with late bassist Nick Daniels III and is Dumpstaphunk’s first studio release since his April 2024 passing.

My first visit to the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival (a.k.a. "Jazzfest") was sort of a happy accident. In 1988, I was a young 20-something Grateful Dead tourhead, and I heard rumors that Little Feat was going to play their first show since the death of Lowell George a decade earlier. The allure was heightened by the fact that the reformed band would play on a riverboat floating on the Mississippi in New Orleans.

Nick Daniels III, New Orleans funk dignitary and one-half of the two-bass duo in Dumpstaphunk, died Friday, April 26 following complications from recently being diagnosed with multiple myeloma cancer. He was 68. The loss comes on the second day of the 2024 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, as many descend upon New Orleans to celebrate the music that defined his storied life. Daniels is survived by his wife Marion Daniels, children, and grandchildren.
