The first official day of Pemberton Music Festival’s stacked three-day weekend went off with just a few hitches, but the chaotic atmosphere (much like the temperamental weather) did little to dampen the spirits of attendees. Despite the ups and downs of the weekend, you were hard-pressed to find a face that wasn’t smiling.

Jack Straw may have been from Wichita but the Grateful Dead only played there once and what a show it was! Kyle Cox recorded The Plan, The Mess with producer/drummer Mike Marsh (Avett Brothers, Dashboard Confessional) in Nashville, TN and although this is is his debut full length, he is no stranger to great song writing. He has been featured in American Songwriter Magazine five separate times, including being the only songwriter in the history of the magazine to have won the American Songwriter Lyrics contest twice.

As the web of Americana continues to be woven, artists connect the past and present through musicianship and songwriting that reflects a fluid agreement between contemporary and roots qualities. Too often is nostalgia misrepresented as authenticity, and bands afraid to develop their own sound generally don’t last the test of time.
