Now in its second year, Vail Soul Music Fest, together with iconic Urban publications EBONY and JET magazines, bring an authentic and stirring celebration of a rich and vibrant international music genre to the majestic natural backdrop of the Rocky Mountains.

Besides a plethora of giant fiddle contests, I really have no festival experience to speak of. (Don’t get me wrong, fiddle participants can booze, substance-abuse, and play the shit out of acoustic instruments till the sun rises) But that's a different story.  Let's get back to Desert Rocks, and how I am so fulfilled with my first festival journey! It was a weekend of love and acceptance, filled with the young, the transient, the locals, and the Coloradoans (not all of them, but a lot).

Did you ever see the movie, The Blues Brothers?  I saw it back when it came out, in a theatre.. It’s one of my favorite comedies of all time. And one of my favorite scenes is at the honky-tonk bar, where John Belushi’s character asks the waitress what kind of music is played there.  She replies in a happy chirp, “Oh – we’ve got both kinds.. Country – AND  – Western.. “

Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo will perform a solo suspended guitar score for Buster Keaton’s 1922 silent film Cops at ELLNORA | The Guitar Festival at Krannert Center in Urbana, Illinois, on September 9, 2011.

Ranaldo’s score for Krannert Center will feature the suspended guitar phenomena of this American musician/record producer/visual artist who’s best known as a co-founder of Sonic Youth. Rolling Stone ranked Ranaldo as #33 of its 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time, describing his music as “his own language of strange and blissful guitar noise.”

The Hangout Festival in Gulf Shores, Alabama this past weekend has officially cemented itself among the heavy-hitting top-notch summer festivals of the year, both in terms of musical content and festavarian (read: festival-goers) satisfaction.
