Check out the new Musicians Spotlight on Jackie Greene and the other spotlights to learn more about the great musicians who support the Rex Foundation

The latest Food for Thought highlights the work of Rex beneficiary Hearts of Gold. The Food for Thought features provide a more in-depth look at the great work carried .out by Rex beneficiaries, and, along with the full list of Rex Foundation grants, demonstrate the breadth of positive impacts that result from your generous support.

weirWe are now ready to expand our work to raise awareness about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) with The World As It Could Be Human Rights Education Project , and invite you to be a sponsor of this exciting work.  This project builds on the successes of the two initiatives The World As It Could Be - A Declaration of Human Rights, and The World As It Could Be: Where There's A Will There's A Way, by developing public high school curriculum that integrates the creative arts to inspire both deeper learning about the UDHR and the community engagement to manifest its words.

Now is a particularly important time to celebrate how we as a philanthropic community can support the vital work of grassroots non-profits.  As we illustrate with the Rex Community Caravan, $5 or more can add up quickly to make a difference.  If 100,000 people each contribute $5, the Rex Foundation can multiply its grant making capacity very quickly.

Thanks for being part of our ongoing efforts.  Here is to all the good that we can accomplish together.

The San Francisco Giants will pay tribute to music legend Jerry Garcia on Monday, August 9, when they face the Chicago Cubs at 7:15 p.m. Garcia and the Grateful Dead are synonymous with San Francisco and each year the City celebrates “the days between” which are the days within Garcia’s birthday (August 1) and the day of his passing (August 9).

San Francisco’s ‘Dead Heads’ and music fans alike will gather at AT&T Park to pay homage to Jerry Garcia on the 15th anniversary of his passing. Fans who purchase a special event ticket will receive a seat in the Jerry Garcia designated section at AT&T Park; a limited edition Jerry Garcia/Giants themed bobblehead, portraying Garcia’s National Anthem performance at Candlestick Park back on April 12, 1993; and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Jerry Garcia and Grateful Dead inspired Rex Foundation. Tickets can be purchased by visiting sfgiants.com/specialevents or by calling 415-972-2233.

All fans attending the game will be treated to pre-game, live musical performances from some of San Francisco’s most popular Jerry Garcia and Grateful Dead cover bands and a home plate ceremony featuring a video tribute to Garcia with many of his family members in attendance. Garcia’s daughter, Annabelle Garcia, will throw out the ceremonial first pitch and Grateful Dead member Bob Weir will perform the National Anthem and Grateful Dead’s Mickey Hart will lead fans in a special 7th Inning Stretch celebration. In an attempt to set an official Guinness World Record for the world’s largest kazoo ensemble, Hart will lead more than 7,000 kazoo playing fans in “Take Me Out To The Ball Game.”

For fans interested in attending a Jerry Garcia/Grateful Dead VIP Party, from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. in AT&T Park’s new Triples Alley location, a limited number of tickets are available for purchase. This event will include an exclusive Q&A session with Garcia’s family members, friends and Rex board members. Grateful Dead band mates Bob Weir and Mickey Hart will also be in attendance. KNBR’s morning show host Paul McCaffrey will moderate the discussion. A Jerry Garcia and Grateful Dead cover band will hold a private show for those in attendance. Tickets are available for $175 and include access to this premium space; a Lower Box game ticket; the limited edition Jerry Garcia bobblehead; food and beverages; and a portion of the proceeds will benefit the Jerry Garcia and Grateful Dead inspired Rex Foundation. Tickets to this event can be purchased by visiting sfgiant.com/specialevents or by calling 415-972-2233.

The Rex Foundation congratulates Diane di Prima, FAIR Fund, and the San Francisco Mime Troupe Youth Theater Project, 2011 recipients of the Ralph J. Gleason Award, Bill Graham Award, and Jerry Garcia Award.

The Ralph J. Gleason Award honors the memory of the late music journalist, whose openness to new music and ideas transcended differences between generations and styles. In that spirit, we present this year's award to San Francisco poet and artist Diane di Prima, who once wrote, "The only war that matters is the war against the imagination / All other wars are subsumed in it," and of whom her contemporary, Beat poet Michael McClure, said, "There is no other poet like Diane di Prima."

Rex Foundation board member Carolyn Garcia says: "This is truly a person who marched to a very different drummer, not really a hippie, nor adherent to any particular rant.  She dazzles with her mind, and her choice of words, and the deliberate unfolding of her warm, intimate works.  Of the surviving Beats, she has risen as the voice of the feminine spirit, and with dry wit and gentle spirit, her writing exquisitely captures the idioms of her times."

The Bill Graham Award is presented in memory of pioneering producer and founding Rex board member Bill Graham, himself a refugee, to support those working to assist children who are victims of political oppression and human rights violations.  This year's award goes to FAIR Fund, which works to end human trafficking of young girls.

Rex Foundation board member Rosalie Howarth says: "FAIR Fund Executive Director Andrea Powell has been instrumental in bringing this issue into the national spotlight, and she's done it with courage and boldness and a tiny budget, collaborating with educators, law enforcement, and government agencies, yet remaining nimble and effective. She is 'on the ground,' she is 'on the street,'  and she is online, where an ever-increasing proportion of sex trafficking takes place. She is patient and relentless in exposing those who profit from this despicable crime. Her prevention programs help ensure that other girls will not fall prey to similar situations.  Bill would have admired her pluck and her passion, and her power to inspire her allies... and intimidate her foes."

The Jerry Garcia Award, established in memory of the Grateful Dead's late guitarist and Rex Foundation founding board member, honors and supports individuals and groups that work to encourage creativity in young people.  The 2011 recipient is the San Francisco Mime Troupe Youth Theater Project, which uses theater to promote artistic expression, intellectual curiosity, and cross-cultural understanding as creative alternatives to drugs, gangs, prejudice, and hostility.

Rex Foundation board member Freddy Hahne says: "The San Francisco Mime Troupe has a rich history educating people about life's struggles through theater, music and humor. They have taken this same approach to educate youth to build skills of team-building, collaboration, improvisation and respect for human rights."

Furthering what the Grateful Dead started 28 years ago, the Rex Foundation, a non-profit charitable organization, endeavors to fund grassroots programs that are often under the radar of larger funding entities, yet work in bold, innovative ways to carry out essential work toward a healthy environment, promotion of the arts, protection of indigenous cultures, assisting others less fortunate, building strong communities, and educating children and adults.  The Rex Foundation has distributed $8.7 million in grants to over 1,000 programs across the U.S. and internationally, while also carrying out fundraising initiatives that foster creativity and positive community connections.  Visit www.rexfoundation.org for a complete list of grantees and information about current initiatives.

The Rex Foundation has recently received a major gift of $550,000, having been designated as the primary beneficiary of the estate of David Thorberson. Needless to say, this extraordinary contribution provides a tremendous boost to support Rex endeavors.  Please click here to read more about this gift and the person behind it.  All of us at Rex are deeply honored by David's recognition of our work as being worthy of his bequest. On January 23rd I had the pleasure of being a guest on the Bruce Latimer Show of Pacifica Community Television.  Bruce was interested in learning more about how the Rex Foundation carried on after the passing of Jerry Garcia and the end of Grateful Dead touring, and also wanted his audience to gain knowledge of Rex work.  Click here to see the video of this interview. As noted in the discussion with Bruce, it is because of the generous support of so many of you that the Rex Foundation has carried on successfully, with a new total of $8.8 million in grants to over 1,000 grassroots programs.  Exemplifying this support is the continual expansion of the Rex Musical Caravan, with musicians in different parts of the country including Rex as a charitable component of their performances.  Here are current Caravan initiatives that you can take part in to enjoy great music while also supporting Rex:

  • Dogpatch Junction has designated several shows of their current tour as Rex Musical Caravan events. Here are the details.
  • Keller Williams just released KEYS, his second benefit album for Rex.  We welcome hearing your reviews of the download.  Our homepage features the album and links to all the details to purchase the music.
  • On Saturday, March 22nd at Mexicali Live in Teaneck, NJ, the Reflections Band, with acoustic band McMule play for Rex.  The Reflections Band is now in its 5th year on the Rex Musical Caravan!

The generosity and care reflected in this message, along with your steadfast contributions, whether $5, $50, $500, $5,000 or whatever amount, are making it possible for Rex to continue to have positive impacts in the community, such as that expressed in the letter from Jim Billington of Hidden Wings.  We are grateful and look forward to continually demonstrating all the good that comes from our connection as a giving community.

Many of you likely know well the "Uncle John's Band" phrase, "Whoa-oh, what I want to know, where does the time go?" These words are especially poignant to me as I write this message about upcoming change for the Rex Foundation. With 12 incredible and deeply meaningful years passing very quickly since I became Executive Director, I am now planning my transition out of this role, anticipating the change to take place later this year.  As I hope you see as you read this full letter, it is because of all the positive results over these last 12 years, that we have this special opportunity to pave the way for new energy to take Rex to its next level of benefit to the community. It is your involvement and support that makes it possible for Rex to thrive and do its part to help others.  While the Rex Board and I work on the details of the transition, we are actively working on various initiatives, including planning benefit events and collabor ating with musicians and others to expand the Rex Musical Caravan.  For example, we are very excited to announce a new Rex Musical Caravan event featuring our own Board member Stefanie Coyote, performing with her band Olive and the Dirty Martinis on Friday, April 5that the Freight & Salvage in Berkeley, CA.  Check out the details and join us!Our Rex Musical Caravan page provides links to all the upcoming events supporting Rex, including the following:Thursday, March 21st, Dogpatch Junction performs at 19 Broadway in Fairfax, CA, as part of their upcoming tour, as described here. Friday, March 22nd, the Reflections Band, joined by McMule , performs at Mexicali Live in Teaneck, NJ.  Here are the details. And, we want to once again thank Keller Williams for his steadfast, generous support that now includes KEYS, his second Rex benefit download compilation.  If you haven't already, follow this link to read more about the album and the track details.I am looking forward to our continuing communications and connections over these next few months, as we prepare for this exciting next phase of Rex Foundation endeavors.  Thank you for your continuing support and participation, as this makes all the difference to me and all of us at Rex.

With Standing on the Moon, The Rex Foundation looks forward to an exceptional night of music with our annual return to the historic Fillmore Auditorium. Set up in festive cabaret style with reserved seating on the floor, The Fillmore, with its beauty and iconic connection to the Grateful Dead, sets the stage for this special occasion.  At the pre-concert reception, enjoy hearty finger foods and beverages as you reconnect with friends and family. Your generous reception/concert ticket purchase of $250, $500, or $1,000, of which all but $100 is a charitable contribution, will fund Rex Foundation grant making. Join us as we come together to celebrate the music and spirit of our community.

We're thrilled to be joined by our friends Leftover Salmon. Looking back over the past 25 years of rootsy, Americana, string-based music, the impact of their music is impossible to deny. Formed in Boulder, CO in 1989 the group was one of the first bluegrass bands to add drums and tour rock & roll bars, helping Salmon become a pillar of the jam band scene and unwitting architects of the jam grass genre. In its present configuration, the band is comprised of founding members Vince Herman (vocals, acoustic and electric guitar, mandolin) and Drew Emmitt (vocals, mandolin, acoustic and electric guitar, mandola, fiddle) along with Andy Thorn (vocals, acoustic and electric banjo, National guitar); Greg Garrison (vocals, acoustic and electric bass, acoustic guitar); Alwyn Robinson (drums, percussion), and the exciting recent addition of Little Feat keyboardist Bill Payne.

Straight out of Woodstock, NY, soulful songstress Amy Helm  will be performing with her band, The Handsome Strangers.  Amy's deep musical roots were enriched by a lifetime of exposure to the finest expressions of American musical tradition. Combined with her stunning vocal and other creative gifts, those roots have grown up to reveal a spellbinding artist who moves easily through a broad range of musical styles.  The daughter of music legend Levon Helm and singer/songwriter Libby Titus Fagen, Helm wields a powerful voice that can both stir and soothe, whether she is singing traditional gospel, blues standards or her own heartfelt compositions. She is a gifted musician on both mandolin and drums, and has clearly absorbed the lessons of the many other accomplished artists with whom she has shared stages, including Mavis Staples, Emmylou Harris, and Joan Osborne as well as other uniquely American performers like Dr. John and Hubert Sumlin.

We're very grateful to all these artists for their music and their support, and we look forward to seeing you at one of these memorable concerts this summer.

We hope that you will join us in sending a clear and unmistakable message: OUR LOVE WILL NOT FADE AWAY." If you'd like to join the giving party, find out more here - and thank you!

Every two years, the Venice Biennale brings together the world's most interesting artists, musicians, and performers for a unique, high-energy gathering. This October, Rex offers a chance to immerse yourself in the Art and Music Biennales, with concerts, in-house events, and plenty of opportunities to engage with the artists, your fellow travelers, and Venice. Among the resident artists are longtime Rex supporters Nicki Bluhm, Tim Bluhm, and John Kadlecik. Join us October 8-18 for fun, inspiration, and grand adventure, made possible by Innovative Giving Enhancement, who chose Rex as the partner beneficiary for this experiential residency. Spaces are limited-reserve yours now

Following the Fare Thee Well shows, Rex board member Trixie Garcia reflected on the reunion, the community, the gathering, and the possibilities in an interview with Glide Magazine. Asked about Rex's future, she said, "Of course [Fare Thee Well] gives Rex more longevity. It broadens our whole reach for sure, and it's a real treat to see a lot of people who were born since Jerry died at the shows and totally geeking out about the Grateful Dead. Another thing that was great about the show was the whole multi-generational thing that was happening, you know, people coming with their grandkids or their mom."

Thanks so much to all of you who came to our Let It Rock and High Steppin' Into Town benefits in SF and Chicago, or dropped by our table on Participation Row. It was great to connect with so many of you-stay in touch!

We're thrilled to announce a fantastic upcoming show at the Fillmore as we celebrate Rex's work in 2015.

In their only San Francisco appearance, Steve Kimock and Friends bring their Tribute to Jerry Garcia to the Fillmore. After playing a series of East Coast shows earlier this year to rave reviews, noted guitarist Kimock, along with Jeff Chimenti, Jay Lane, and Bobby Vega, will pay tribute to Jerry's solo work, including his collaborations with Merl Saunders and the various incarnations of the Jerry Garcia Band. Along the way, Steve's playing will also honor some of the influences he shares with Jerry, including such legendary artists as Roy Buchanan, Freddie King, BB King, and Mike Bloomfield, who Steve considers a catalyst for most musicians in Bay Area.

This promises to be a great celebration of Jerry Garcia's soulful musical legacy, as well as Rex's successful work in 2015. Tickets are now on sale-join the party!

Earlier this year, the Rex Foundation Board of Directors presented our Ralph J. Gleason award to Levon Helm. Named after the renowned music journalist from San Francisco who was a major figure in the advancement of music in America in the 1960s, the award is given to people or organizations that have exemplified high standards in furthering creativity and promoting modern musical expression. It is in this vein that we choose to recognize not only Levon Helm's unique musical gifts but also his vision of community-based musical events that he pioneered at his majestic barn in Woodstock, N.Y.

Levon cherished the music of his youth in Arkansas and sought to replicate the essence of that experience by hosting "Rambles" at his Barn in Woodstock.

Starting rather modestly, the first incarnations of these events began with Levon creating a house band, which came to be known as the Midnight Ramble Band.

Founded with his daughter Amy Helm and Larry Campbell, the band features an incredible array of talented musicians, including a three-piece horn section, exceptional vocals and the ability to play any genre of music that comes their way.

Levon created an enduring vision with his Barn and the Midnight Ramble Band, and both continue to flourish despite his absence. The fact that both of these expressions of his musical genius are still here with us is a profound legacy.

We are thrilled to have the Midnight Ramble Band come and perform at our annual December 3 Benefit entitled "Ramble on Rose." Over the years the Grateful Dead, The Band, and Levon in particular, had many epic moments together.

This show will be not only be a fitting tribute to that shared history but will have you dancing all night long and for days after. Please join us for a rare West Coast performance of the Midnight Ramble Band, along with some special friends. This will be a night you won't soon forget!

Tickets are now on sale. See you there!

With all the snow falling up in the Sierra this winter, let’s get up there and take it all in! We are very pleased to announce the return of Fire on the Mountain, a vertical challenge ski race, on March 31, 2017 at the prestigious Squaw Valley Resort. The race brings skiers together to compete on mandatory runs to accumulate the top score of vertical feet skied. The race’s popularity continues to grow, and we expect a big turnout this year, as the conditions will be the best they have been in recent memory.

The event starts with a pre-race continental breakfast where the teams gather and the race rules are discussed before a Le Mans start (an event in itself) kicks off the race. Participants will ski as many runs as possible, with the winning team being the one that covers the most vertical feet in total.

After the race, there will be a post race barbecue and no-host bar on the sun deck of the lodge, with tunes provided by our good friends Achilles Wheel Trio, performing a special blend of what has come to be called Americana/Roots music. They were so fantastic last year that we had to have them back!

All this would be a very full day on the mountain—but there’s more!

WinterWonderGrass, one of the top music festivals on the West Coast, takes place at Squaw Valley the same weekend as our race.

The good folks who produce the festival, Bonfire Entertainment, have graciously invited our racers to come to Friday night’s festival, which promises to be an exceptional show with two of the hottest bands on the bluegrass circuit: The Infamous Stringdusters and Yonder Mountain String Band.

We want to thank our friends at the Squaw Valley Resort, WinterWonderGrass, The North Face and J.P. Morgan Securities for helping make this event possible. All net proceeds of the race will go to the Rex Foundation, and portion will be used for grants to non profits in the North Lake Tahoe Basin.

The conditions, location, music and camaraderie promise to make this year’s Fire on the Mountain the best one yet. We look forward to seeing you on the Mountain!

We're getting excited about the Dancing in the Street benefit coming up at The Fillmore on December 9th. This annual gathering is always a great way to kick off the festive nature of the season. It is also one of the most important events we undertake in an effort to raise funds that we in turn grant to a multitude of organizations creating positive change in communities around the globe.

The event begins with a pre-show reception, where we enjoy a delicious meal prepared by our friends at Global Gourmet. Paired with the food this year are some great wines provided by Silver Oak, Twomey Cellars, and Winery Sixteen 600. To help set the mood for Dancing in the Street, Harry Duncan will spin a set of soul/rhythm and blues from 1967.

This year we have been working with Dan Lebowitz and his wife Jenna to craft an evening of music that will be presented in two sets. The first set, a tribute to the Summer of Love, will feature many artists who were present in 1967, along with more recent arrivals to the vibrant Bay Area music scene. Dan and Jenna helped put together the much talked-about show in Golden Gate Park, and this December show at The Fillmore offers an excellent bookend to all the Summer of Love festivities.

The second set will again feature an all-star cast playing the music of the founders of the Rex Foundation--none other than the good ol' Grateful Dead. It's sure to have you dancing in the aisles and in the street!

We are also working on our silent auction with a Summer of Love theme, with some original Fillmore posters, photographs from Herbie Greene and other surprises.

Come enjoy fine food, great music and most of all community for a night that we won’t soon forget. Tickets and info here.

Tue, 12/05/2017 - 10:06 am

We've got an unbelievable night in store this Saturday at The Fillmore as a once-in-a-lifetime roster of musicians celebrates the Summer of Love--all in support of Rex's work

First, there's the pre-show reception, with delicious food, excellent wine, and a chance to hang out and catch up with friends and family. Also a chance to check out the...

Silent auction and get in those early bids. It's a specially curated collection of rare and different items associated with the Summer of Love--we think it's our best yet. Fillmore posters. Original art by Mouse and Kelley. Signed photos by Herbie Greene. Steve Brown's iconic image of Jerry Garcia on Haight Street. You won't believe your eyes--but bid anyway!

Then, the show! The first set, a tribute to the Summer of Love, will feature many artists who were present in 1967, along with more recent arrivals to the vibrant Bay Area music scene. Check the roster...

And then, the second set:  an all-star cast playing the music of the Grateful Dead.

Sat, 09/29/2018 - 4:24 pm

Huge thanks to the Chicago Cubs and all of you who took part in our first-ever visit to historic Wrigley Field on August 27. Thanks also to Mr. Blotto, who played a great pregame concert.

It was a great evening of reconnecting with long-lost friends (here, Executive Director Cameron Sears with Deb Solomon of Wall Street Dead aHead and Rex Advisory Board member Jay Caauwe) and watching a great game, as the Cubs beat the Mets 7-4.

The Cubs donated a portion of each special event ticket price to the Rex Foundation, citing Rex's support of good work in the Chicago community, particularly 2017 Jerry Garcia Award recipient Mariachi Heritage Foundation for its music and culture programs in Chicago schools.

Speaking of the Mariachi Heritage Foundation, they're about to hit the road from their home in Chicago, and will be performing at Livermore's Bankhead Theater on October 27.  Go check them out in person! Details here.

Mark your calendars! Saturday, December 1, we return to The Fillmore for our annual benefit concert and holiday festivities. We hope you'll be part of the celebration! We'll have more details to share shortly--it's going to be great. Stay tuned...

Thu, 10/11/2018 - 10:30 am

As 2018 winds to a close, we're getting ready to return to the Fillmore Auditorium for the Annual Rex Foundation Celebration on December 1. We're especially excited with this year's musical roster: the great Melvin Seals and JGB, with special guest Dave Ellis on sax, plus One Big Guitar, featuring  our dear friend Dan "Lebo" Lebowitz and his two compadres Scott Law and Bo Carper.

Melvin Seals needs no introduction, as his 18 years of working with Jerry Garcia made an indelible impression on all of us. His soulful playing on his B-3 added so much to those tunes, and since Jerry's passing, JGB has evolved into today's foremost interpreter of his solo material.

Much of this renown is due to the stellar guitar work of Zach Nugent, who emerged not long ago from the wilds of Burlington, Vermont. Playing with Melvin and JGB for the past three years has solidified his reputation as one of the top interpreters of the Jerry songbook. Zach brings a brilliance and tone to his playing that will take you back to a place we all remember well.

The band also features John Paul McLean on bass, Pete Lavezzoli on drums, and backup vocalists Sunshine Becker and Lady Chi. When they come together, JGB is much more than the sum of its parts, bringing a mighty, soulful sound that would make Jerry proud! We are thrilled to have Melvin and JGB join us for a rockin’ night of Jerry tunes.

Also joining us for this awesome evening is One Big Guitar, made up of Scott Law, Bo Carper and Dan "Lebo" Lebowitz. They play a captivating mix of rootsy country blues anthems and homespun originals. Longtime friends and accomplished guitarists, they showcase their individual musical gifts in a trio that exudes authenticity, synergy and personality. All three of these players are mainstays on the Bay Area music scene and it is a rare treat to have them appearing together. Watch this and you'll agree!

Tickets are on sale now. Download the order form here. Get more event details here, and plan to join us for a fantastic night December 1!

Thu, 11/15/2018 - 5:21 pm

Last night on KPFA's "Dead to the World," guitarist Zach Nugent shared some thoughts on playing with Melvin Seals & JGB, the healing power of music,  its ability to bring people together--and how he's looking forward to being part of all that at The Fillmore. Listen here (clip streams till 11/28; interview starts at about 35:00). On November 28, One Big Guitar will be joining host Tim Lynch in the studio, so check that out too!

Six nights of musical improvisation from Billy Strings start tomorrow, streaming live from the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY.

It is no coincidence that these dates coincide with the 50th anniversary of the Grateful Dead’s legendary 6-night run at The Cap in 1971. With a nod to those historic shows, Billy Strings will perform “The Deja Vu Experiment,” in which the band hopes to tap into the musicianship and fearlessness that the Grateful Dead did 50 years ago, unlocking improvisational boundaries of music and psychedelia in a familiar yet unique way.

These shows will raise funds for Backline Care and the Rex Foundation.

February 18th and 24th are FREE on the Relix Twitch channel.

To say we are very excited to be returning to The Fillmore December 3 in San Francisco with our annual Rex Foundation Benefit would be an understatement. After a two-year hiatus we can’t wait to gather with our beloved Rex community and dance to our hearts’ content!

We always try to have a little fun when coming up with the name for our Rex events. This year we decided on Bound to Cover Just a Little More Ground, which to us speaks to our collective resilience and focus to remain steadfast in our desire to bring about positive social change. This focus has been validated every time we are able to pick up the phone and let a new grantee know that they have received a grant from our community that recognizes the inherent value of the work they are doing. Rest assured that collectively we are all making a difference in a myriad of ways that spans oceans and continents.

First and foremost, we look forward to a fabulous night of music with Melvin Seals and JGB in the intimate surroundings of The Fillmore. A powerful presence in the music industry for over 30 years as a performer, recording artist and producer, Melvin is most revered for his powerful, high-spirited, Hammond B-3 organ, and keyboards in the Jerry Garcia Band, where he spun his magic for 18 years.  Melvin and JGB -- John Kadlecik on guitar and vocals, John-Paul McLean on bass, and Jeremy Hoenig on drums -- bring an intuitive, expressive style, soul, spontaneity and remarkable chops to the table. Their chemistry is the focus from which they create a spontaneous, exciting, often psychedelic musical journey. We can't wait!

Adding some additional spice will be our much beloved friend Dan “Lebo” Lebowitz and Scott Law, who have both been part of past Rex events. Their talent is apparent from the first note, and joining their duo for the evening is special guest Vicki Randle. Vicki is a singer, multi-instrumentalist, and composer. She has performed with many notable musicians, and may be best known as the first permanent female member of The Tonight Show Band.

For this event, we have a couple of improvements that we want to make you aware of. First, we will be limiting the capacity to tables to ensure comfortable distancing. This will also allow us to open a new limited seating section in the balcony on stage right (these seats will offer an incredible view of the stage). We are also introducing a new online ticketing process that will make the purchasing of table seats much more efficient and convenient.

All tickets include our pre-show reception with gourmet food, wine from our friends at Silver Oak, Twomey and 1600 Wineries, as well as a selection of locally brewed beer. We are especially looking forward to this aspect of our gathering as we all get a long overdue chance to reconnect with one another.

The Rex Foundation board went through a lengthy process with a great deal of thought and discussion before we chose to move forward with hosting this event. We all are acutely aware of the roller coaster that is Covid. That said, the City of San Francisco has eliminated any Covid-related requirements for live events, and while that has been working well and the Fillmore has resumed what it was doing before the pandemic emerged, that may not be enough comfort for some. We fully respect individual choice in whether you choose to attend or if you want to wear a mask -- there is no judgement. We will add a small request in the interest of communal well-being, that you take a test the day of the show.

This has been a night we have thought of often over the past two years, and the combination of music, community and celebration will give us all the medicine that we have really been wanting. We look forward to sharing the magic of the night with you!
