Grateful Dead

While the “core four” remaining members of the Grateful Dead are hanging up their collective spurs this Fourth of July weekend, Dark Star Orchestra has no intention of ending their road warrior ways. Dark Star will be in Chicago for the festivities and a performance for the Rex Foundation on July second, and it only seems fitting; they’ve been long considered the top tier of the Grateful Dead cover band food chain.

Grateful Web took notice of the recently announced Grateful Dead Family Jubilee web auction and wanted to know more about it. How did these seemingly priceless things become auction worthy? Where did these artifacts come from? One of the auction organizers, Lisa Purze was kind enough to chat with Grateful Web about it. Providing us with the lowdown on the event that’s in honor of the 50th anniversary of Grateful Dead.

The Rex Foundation is pleased to formally announce The Fire on the Mountain Vertical Challenge ski race.

The kitchen table that members of the Grateful Dead once gathered around to drink coffee and consider the day.  The desk from the band room at 5th and Lincoln.  Jerry Garcia’s last reading material.  The original oil paintings on which Rick Griffin based the 1990 tour poster.  Stanley “Mouse” Miller’s original “Golden Road” fan club poster.  The original lyrics, in Robert Hunter’s handwriting, of “He’s Gone.”

On Thursday, May 14, an extraordinary collection of music stars will come together at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD, for the concert event of a lifetime, DEAR JERRY: CELEBRATING THE MUSIC OF JERRY GARCIA, to honor one of the most influential musicians and cultural icons of our time.

Dead fans will not be allowed to park or camp overnight on land outside of Soldier Field, a spokesman for the arena said today.  With thousands of anticipated ticketless fans heading to Chicago for the 4th of July weekend, and hotels already sold out or very expensive, this could end up causing some troubles for what we all hope will be a wonderful weekend of music with our friends and family.

Valentine’s Day is a day full of love whether you are with someone or single. So many people are divided about how they should feel on this day. For someone like me who loves holidays and live music, there was nothing better for me to do than to enjoy this day with my daughter, support the One Billion Rising March against abuse in Denver, and then seeing some of my favorite musicians performing their interpretations of one of my favorite band’s music.

In the snowy bleak winters of Indianapolis, there are few things that will make you leave the house, but there is one shining light every year when you think you may never be warm again, Dark Star Orchestra’s winter tour always makes a stop in Indianapolis to warm us up. There is no better way to warm your body and your soul, then some sweet Grateful Dead tunes. No matter what the weather is like outside, Dark Star Orchestra will always bring a smile to my face.
