Grateful Dead

Just in time for Record Store Day on November 22nd, a truly under-sung live masterpiece is to be re-released. Many fans know of Jerry Garcia & Howard Wales 1970 memorizing fusion studio album Hooteroll?, which was notable (aside from the inspired flowing free-jazz) as Garcia’s first studio recording outside of the Grateful Dead since the band’s inception. Indeed Garcia saw something remarkable about Wales playing.

We're getting excited about the Dancing in the Street benefit coming up at The Fillmore on December 9th.

If you've been part of the Dead.net community for the past few years, then you know we're on a mission to make a miracle every day in the month of November. This year is no different.

For the first time ever, Side Trips: Volume One, the celebrated live collaboration between Jerry Garcia and keyboardist Howard Wales will be reissued on vinyl and made available at streaming services on Record Store Day (November 24th). Side Trips: Volume One is the latest in a line of special reissues, live recordings, concerts and events planned throughout 2017 & 2018 in celebration of Jerry Garcia’s 75th birthday.

Eyes of the World: Grateful Dead Photography 1965 – 1995 is a fine art, hardcover coffee table photography book that brings together, for the first time, a comprehensive collection of photographs from a wide range of photographers whose work has captured the Grateful Dead at different times throughout their career.

As we head into the holiday season, Record Store Day once again brings record stores into the spotlight, and shoppers back into thriving local businesses. Record stores are the perfect place to discover new musical loves, to re-discover old musical favorites, and to introduce new enthusiasts to the pure joy of music and of record collecting.

We're wrapping up this year's Dave's Picks series with one from the Grateful Dead's beloved Bay Area. An often overlooked gem from '72 (who's to blame with that rich pool of excellence), 8/25/72 Berkeley Community Theatre finds the Dead laid back and in the comfort zone of home. While one might think this would make the night too relaxed, the band fall in line with their "West Coast best" paradigm.

Joe Russo’s Almost Dead isn't much of a secret at this point; over the course of the last couple years they have confidently taken the throne as the pre-eminent Dead cover outfit, an ascension that seemed to culminate with their headlining Red Rocks show this past August.

On October 13th, Round Records will release a special reissue of Jerry Garcia Band’s classic album Cats Under The Stars. In celebration of the 40th anniversary since the album’s recording, two vinyl configurations will be released - a limited edition pressing of 5,000 marbled gold 180gram vinyl with individually numbered foil-stamped packaging and a 180gram black vinyl.

A few thousand music-loving adventure-seekers on September 9 received quite the idyllic sun-splashed reward when they witnessed this year’s Sound Summit, headlined by Phil Lesh and some extra special “friends.” The eight-hour festival-like show, chock full of five performers plus an avant-garde dance ensemble, took place at a perch high above Marin County, California’s Mill Valley, at a hundred-year-old stone amphitheater near the top of the area’s famed Mt. Tamalpais.
