Tue, 08/21/2007 - 8:07 pm

By all accounts, Gathering of the Vibes 2007 was a huge success on every level. The four-day festival, August 9-12, brought together musical artists, staff and an estimated 20,000 attendees from all across the nation to celebrate music, camping and camaraderie, and all agreed that the Vibes return to Bridgeport, CT, was triumphant.

Festival attendees were treated to unforgettable musical performances by Grateful Dead members Bob Weir, Mickey Hart and Donna Godchaux McKay, as well as by George Clinton and Parliament Funkedelic, Allman Brothers alum Dickey Betts, Los Lobos, Buddy Guy, Deep Banana Blackout and many others as Bridgeport showcased one of its crown jewels, Seaside Park.

The Vibes food drive, in conjunction with Strangers Helping Strangers, generated more than 3,300 pounds of nonperishable food donated by the attendees. That figure represents an all-time Gathering of the Vibes record, and is also the largest food drive that Strangers Helping Strangers has ever been involved in. All of the food collected has been delivered to the Bridgeport Veterans Affairs Food Bank. According to the Vibes not-for-profit-coordinator Harry Moran, Food Bank director Jill Bruno was ecstatic with the proceeds, and had to locate off-site storage for a portion of the donations. All of the food collected will stock the shelves for well beyond a year, and will play a significant part in assisting to ameliorate the hunger and poverty situation in Bridgeport.

Sixteen not-for-profit organizations created a village onsite to engage attendees in discussion of social and environmental responsibility. Community Energy, a wind-generated-power company, donated renewable energy credits that allowed the Gathering of the Vibes to offset the carbon footprint generated by the festival's energy demands for running stages, lighting and sound, and powering vendors and production trailers. The Solar Bus and Solar Jam Productions provided solar power to power lights and sound in the NPO Village. For more information on participating NPO's, visit Vibes' "frequently asked questions" page.

Former Grateful Dead publicist/biographer and current Bob Weir and RatDog publicist Dennis McNally has been on the road with the band at festivals for years, and remarked upon how far Gathering of the Vibes has come since its inception. "During Ratdog's performance on Saturday night, I had some time to reflect on what was going on around me. From the production side, Gathering of the Vibes has grown up to become a professional, first-class operation. I find it immaculate and those are the sentiments of our crew as well. GOTV is to be congratulated." The constant touring of RatDog finds them all over the country performing for various-sized audiences. Mr. McNally added, "Saturday night the entire crowd was all in step with each other. That's a marvelous thing to witness in a crowd of that magnitude."

Gathering of the Vibes attendee, WNBC television's Today in New York News Anchor Rob Morrison, enjoyed Dark Star Orchestra and its tribute to Jerry Garcia on Thursday night. "Twelve years ago to the day, I was reporting for WVIT-Hartford and working on a story in Bridgeport regarding their waterfront development. Then I received the news of Jerry Garcia's passing. Now I feel as if it's all come full circle for me. The Bridgeport waterfront looks magnificent. Seaside Park is the perfect venue to bring kind and mellow attendees that want to listen to great music and celebrate Jerry." Mr. Morrison certainly hasn't forgotten where he lived and the stories he covered, and feels the vibrancy of the festival and appreciates the development of the city. "I've seen the tough times facing parts of Connecticut and the creative ways come up with to revitalize their cities. This is win-win for Bridgeport and all Gathering of the Vibes attendees. I'm very impressed with Bridgeport's forward thinking by inviting the Vibes into their community."

Clean Vibes, a festival cleanup organization, as well as the Vibes Operation Staff, put in several days of work following the event and succeeded in picking up every piece of trash left behind to make Seaside look spotless. Vibes executive producer Ken Hays initiated an aggressive recycling effort that kept more than 180 yards of trash from the city's landfill. The Bridgeport Board of Park Commissioners met with Mr. Hays on August 14 to recap the event. Board Chairman Mark Marko suggested that Gathering of the Vibes commence plans for the event to return to Seaside Park next year. Another followup meeting with the commissioners and Mr. Hays is scheduled for next month.

The City of Bridgeport and Gathering of the Vibes have finalized an agreement to hold the annual music, camping and arts festival at Seaside Park for the next five years, through summer 2012.  This year's 13th annual event, scheduled for July 31–Aug. 3, 2008, features New Orleans legends The Neville Brothers, southern rockers The Black Crowes, Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh and Friends and Bridgeport's own Deep Banana Blackout.

Mayor Bill Finch (D-Bridgeport) commented, "We're excited to continue developing Bridgeport's relationship with Gathering of the Vibes. The Vibes is an exceptional addition to Bridgeport's blossoming arts and entertainment scene, as well as a tremendous opportunity to showcase the Park City to thousands of out-of-town guests from throughout the country. We look forward to growing together over the next five years."

Gathering of the Vibes Executive Director Ken Hays added, "I want to thank Mayor Finch and the entire City of Bridgeport for all their support over the years. The Vibes at Seaside Park is a true team effort and I couldn't be more pleased about today's announcement. As a lifelong Connecticut resident, it's a privilege to call Seaside Park home for the next five years."

The four-day festival offers entertainment options for the entire family.  In addition to showcasing 40 bands on three stages, this year's event launches the bold Green Vibes environmental initiative, aimed at educating attendees on issues related to global climate change. Local organizations committed to developing sustainable energy alternatives will be highlighted, while a "Solar Stage," featuring up-and-coming artists from the Bridgeport area and beyond, will be powered by on-site solar panels.   A wide variety of custom arts and crafts vendors will be on hand, while designated kids areas provide diversions for even the youngest of attendees (kids 12 and under are admitted to the event free of charge).  Convenient shuttle service to satellite lots, local hotels, the Bridgeport Metro North station and Port Jefferson Ferry makes the event an easily accessible day trip from anywhere in the northeast.

Gathering of the Vibes 2008 marks the festival's fourth appearance at Seaside Park.  The 1999 and 2000 concerts were unprecedented ventures for the Park, with thousands of campers taking up residence for extended weekends of music and revelry, which propelled the event to national prominence.  Following a sweeping restoration and renovation project at Seaside Park, Gathering of the Vibes returned to the Long Island Sound waterside haven in August 2007.  Approximately 20,000 attendees per day enjoyed musical performances by acclaimed artists such as Buddy Guy, George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic, and the Grateful Dead's Bob Weir.  This year's event will again showcase musical legends and emerging artists at the Park's 370 pristine acres.

Seaside Park is abuzz as stages, mobile office trailers, fence-lines, restrooms and shower trucks settle into place for the 14th annual Gathering of the Vibes festival, which runs from Thursday, July 23rd through Sunday, July 26th.

With legends like Crosby, Stills and Nash, Buddy Guy and George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic in the line-up – along with bands like Guster and State Radio, who bring out a younger audience – advance ticket sales have been strong, causing promoters to expect another solid turnout this year.  Last year’s attendance exceeded 20,000 per day during the four day event.

“We’re ready,” said Ken Hays, Vibes Executive Director. “Our operations, traffic, parking and security teams have worked with the City of Bridgeport since last year’s event to ensure a safe and enjoyable weekend for all.  It’s coming together nicely.”

Crosby, Stills and Nash’s (CSN) first gig together was 40 years ago this summer at the Woodstock Music and Arts Festival.  CSN will headline a very special Family Day at Vibes on Sunday, July 26th, where kids 15 and under are admitted free when accompanied by a parent. Along with CSN, the Sunday Family Day lineup features blues legend Buddy Guy, the word famous Harlem Gospel Choir, progressive reggae artists John Brown’s Body, and neoclassic rockers Grace Potter and the Nocturnals.

The Vibes 2009 line-up features over 40 artists on four stages, including other original Woodstock participants Bob Weir & Ratdog, drummer and vocalist Levon Helm (The Band), and activist Wavy Gravy, who will serve as master of ceremonies.  Other performers include Boston’s indie-rockers State Radio and Guster, longtime Vibes favorites moe. and Deep Banana Blackout, and many, many more!

Charitable Focus

Gathering of the Vibes, in conjunction with the Terrapin Foundation, is hosting a non-perishable food drive to benefit three local food pantries - the Bridgeport Office of Veterans Affairs, the Bridgeport Department on Aging and Operation Hope of Fairfield.

moeThe time of year and state of the economy make the task of social outreach organizations ever more difficult. Food banks and emergency shelters collect the bulk of annual donations around the holidays, meaning shelves start to empty by summertime. This past year has also shown the largest growth in demand for middle class public outreach since the Great Depression.

The Vibes’ food drive offers festival attendees a chance to give back to the Bridgeport community – to repay them for use of their beautiful park,” Hays said.

Items needed include: baby food and/or formula, canned vegetables and soups, canned non-perishable meat, pasta and sauce, macaroni & cheese, deodorant, soap, shampoo, shaving products, toothbrushes, toothpaste, mouthwash, Q-tips, diapers, and sanitary pads.  A primary collection station will be across from the Main Concert Field entrance.  Unstaffed donation stations will also be located at entrances and exits to the festival grounds. Whole Foods Market in Westport, CT has agreed to start this drive off with a sizable donation.

Gathering of the Vibes 2010 marks the third installment of a five-year contract with the city of Bridgeport to host the annual music, arts and camping festival at Seaside Park through summer 2012. After drawing 20,000 revelers per day to the 370-acre venue last year, the city and festival organizers look to spread more positive Vibes in 2010.  This all-ages, family-friendly event will be held from July 29 to August 1. The festival caters to both weekend campers and single-day guests; both will have access to the park, including its shaded groves, manicured fields and more than a mile of Long Island Sound beachfront.

The initial 2010 lineup includes the reunion of LES CLAYPOOL’S PRIMUS, reggae legend and 2010 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-inductee JIMMY CLIFF, Grateful Dead’s MICKEY HART and BILL KREUTZMANN’S RHYTHM DEVILS featuring KELLER WILLIAMS, reggae sensation DAMIAN MARLEY with special guest hip-hop icon NAS, pedal steel guitar master ROBERT RANDOLPH & THE FAMILY BAND, New Orleans funk outfit GALACTIC, and many, many more!

Other confirmed artists include Steve Kimock Crazy Engine; Umphrey’s McGee; Beastie Boys’ DJ “Mix Master Mike”; Jackie Greene Band; Little Feat; Martin Sexton featuring The Ryan Montbleau Band; New Riders of the Purple Sage; Donna Jean Godchaux; Dark Star Orchestra; Zach Deputy; Big Sam’s Funky Nation; and Max Creek. The Sunday-night headliner and Green Vibes Stage artist announcements are forthcoming.

Since its inception, Gathering of the Vibes and its fans have made “giving back” a priority through their  support of numerous social causes. In 2008 and 2009 combined festival organizers have donated more than $125,000 to local Bridgeport charities, the Connecticut Special Olympics and many other worthy not-for-profit organizations. In 2009, festival attendees donated 5,500 pounds of non-perishable items to local and state food banks. The festival’s bold “Green Vibes” environmental initiative ranges from an aggressive on-site recycling campaign to educating fans on the current research and development being done, and the progress being made in the field of alternative energy.

“School of Rock is honored to be involved with one of the most amazing music festivals on the summer circuit,” said Mark Biondi, School of Rock director of product development and All-Stars. “The opportunity to have our students watch, listen and learn from the masters while sharing the gift of music with the Vibes audience is something these kids will never forget. We can’t wait to see the magic they’ll be creating together.”

Gathering of the Vibes is proud to announce New England’s “Godfathers of Jam,” Max Creek, will celebrate 40 years together Saturday afternoon on the Main Stage. Reuniting four of the five former members of God Street Wine, Dan Pifer and Jon Bevo will now join Lo Faber and Aaron Maxwell on the Green Vibes Stage.

Fri, 07/15/2011 - 12:38 am

With 25,000 attendees expected per day, the 16th Annual Gathering of the Vibes music, arts and camping festival and the City of Bridgeport prepare for larger than expected crowds along the 370-acre waterfront of Seaside Park.

“We are working with the city parks department to make sure that everybody who comes to the Vibes has an amazing experience,” says festival promoter Ken Hays.  “We’ve secured more parking lots, shuttle buses, porto-lets and increased safety patrols,” Hays added.

The Vibes 2011 line-up includes Los Angeles rockers Jane’s Addiction, Elvis Costello and the Imposters, FURTHUR featuring Phil Lesh and Bob Weir, Dr. John & the Lower 911, The Taj Mahal Trio, Levon Helm Band, Toots and the Maytals, Tedeschi Trucks Band and moe. alongside 50 bands performing on 4 stages. The complete schedule of performances can be found at www.GOVIBES.com.

What differentiates the Vibes from other music festivals is its multi-generational fan base. With so much global uncertainty flooding the air waves, the festival offers families an opportunity to get away and reflect upon what’s truly important; family, friends, live music and community.  Last year, 2,300 children accompanied their parents to the musical retreat. Gathering of the Vibes 2011 proudly partners with the nation’s top performance based musical academy, School of Rock, and also KORG USA, Lag Guitars, Vox, Blackstar, and Zildjian to create a truly interactive Rock and Roll performance space for kids and their parents to enjoy.  This year, Kids 12 and under are free when accompanied by parents, and on Sunday, “Family Day at the Vibes,” kids 15 and under are admitted free of charge.

Vibes continues to “give back” to the local Bridgeport community in the form of a $100,000 donation that facilitated the construction of a splash pad on the city’s east end.  A ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled for Friday, July 15th, celebrating the official opening of the water park just in time for families not fortunate enough to have parks and playgrounds within walking distance.

“Giving back has always been important an important part of the Vibes and the response to the water park has been overwhelming,” shared Hays.  “There are so many needs in the community and in the words of Jerry Garcia, “you just gotta’ poke around” to find a way to make a positive difference.”

Gathering of the Vibes began in 1996 as a celebration of the life of Jerry Garcia who had passed away the previous summer. Initially named “Deadhead Heaven,” the festival continues to be an annual forum for fans across the country to remember the counter-cultural icon.  Gathering of the Vibes combines legendary artists with emerging acts to appeal to a wide cross-section of live music enthusiasts.
